Ura Nage (Rear Throw) is a core throwing technique in Judo and Sambo. Coaches Steve Scott and Derrick Darling teach Ura Nage for use in Judo keeping in mind both the IJF rules on grabbing below the belt as well as the rules of AAU Judo and Freestyle Judo that do not have the restrictions of the IJF rules. Thanks to Mike Mills and TJ Barnet for their help.

This is one of the few counter-attack techniques which I do fairly well. Thank you for the detailed explanations!

+kristianOLS Glad you asked. I just posted three videos of Ude Gaeshi that were scheduled for later release. Since you asked, now is a great time to post them. We have used Ude Gaeshi in Sambo for a long time and it is definitely "old school" Kodokan Judo (proving that "old school" continues to be effective). Each of these three Ude Gaeshi videos show something different about the technique. While there are other methods of doing this throw, I hope what we present is helpful to you. Thanks for the suggestion and please tell others about our channel.

I keep getting my waist arm caught under the uke everytime I do this technique. Had a real painful injury recently because of it. Could you suggest what I did wrong? Is it because I wasn't able to rotate fast enough?

Two things that will help. First, you are correct about rotating. The quicker you rotate the less weight placed on your arm around uke's waist. Have as a goal to finish the throw by turning completely into uke as he lands. This will allow you the time to withdraw your arm from round his waist and insure that everyone knows you are the person doing the throw. Second, as you throw your opponent, place emphasis on the hand you use to hold his lapel-and place emphasis on your head placement in his near side shoulder area. Doing this helps you rotate more easily as you throw him and gives you more time to withdraw your arm from deeply around his waist. Hope this helps!

Thank you so much, planning to practice this move more in my next class of judo. If anything I just hope I won't hurt my uke as much since we don't have crash pads

Isn't this throw banned in the IJF?

+judo hernandez From what I have heard from several referees, as long as the attacker doesn't grab lower than the belt, it's okay-but then again-it all depends on the referee on the mat at the time. It's a shame that the IJF has made such a mess of the rules, but that is the state of the sport of Judo right now. This throw is allowed in AAU Judo and in our AAU Freestyle Judo rules as well.

Everyone has a finish that works best for them. If that works best for you, go for it. Sometimes, for a variety of reasons, the move you want to finish with may not develop, so just make sure you finish in a controlling position after the throw to transition to groundfighting.
