Most don't see the value, or know anything about craftsmanship. There is PLENTY of money to do it with, but they would rather waste it on a McMansion. And they don't have to be completely fixed all at once. Get it in the dry and fix up a part of it to live in, and then keep working on the rest of it. Back in the 70s and 80s, there were some young couples who would by a rundown house, and learn to do a lot of the work themselves to save money. Now people think everything must be hired out to expensive workman. I learned a great deal from books, videos, and early issues of the Old House Journal. Those early issues should be reprinted in book form so everyone could potentially have a copy.

What a beautiful old brick house! So sad to see it left to fall apart. Someone with deep pockets could restore it to its original beauty. I grew up in a house that was built in 1880 which had many of the same features as the fabulous old houses you share with us. Sadly my childhood home may suffer the same fate as these old houses. I’m 70 now, parents are long gone, the house was sold and now sits empty. Thanks for sharing these splendid homes from days gone by Kappy! 😊

There are lots of preservation tools available, beginning with the National Register of Historic Places. Be proactive. If it is still standing, it is not too late. I have saved historic buildings with less than 24 hours before demolition. So if you have the health and energy, go for it. There is lots and lots of help available for filling out forms. Contact your State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) and your historical society. It is actually lots of fun!!!!!! The National Register no longer protects historic properties - I believe that was removed under Reagan - anyway, it does now include a 20% investment tax credit when a designated historic structure is adapted for commercial purposes, including offices, rental property, etc. In addition, most states now have tax credits as well, usually available for the restoration of historic structures for EITHER commercial or private residential use. The result is that as much as 45% of major restoration expenses (Often only the exterior - but check) may be tax deductible. As a result, the place to start is the SHPO and the local historical society and National Register designation. It's fun. You get to ride to the rescue - finally, remember to publicize your work and research. newspapers usually love these stories. Besides, it is much harder for people to demolish a well known building than one which is largely unknown, where no one knows it's historic.

That was def a radiator in the 1st houses 3rd floor toilet. I know this sounds weird but I listed a house for sale that had makeshift "shelves" in the attic. The people had several foster children and put mattresses on them. They had a time-out room they would put the children in for punishment. I used to find it hard to believe that was allowed but knowing about what goes on in CPS, I guess it's normal stuff. That basement in the 2nd house is WILD! The entire thing looks like it was carved out of rocks. I noticed plumbing going into the cave like area, i can't imagine having to do work in there!!! 😮 Someday, when these houses are long gone, your videos will be their history! Thank you!

This is a wonderful example of a Gothic carpenter home. In brick. Pointed trim above windows. Floor to ceiling windows for circulation and cool breezes. Back and front staircases. Built in bunks. Steam radiators. Handmade mantles. The steel beams in basement were added later. The original 8x12 center beam is surrounded by 4x12 floor joists. Just wow. And it's dry. This home isn't timber framed but it the foundation certainly is substantial.

From the looks of the appliances, it’s been a while since someone occupied the home. I did see on here where a house very similar to this one was purchased by a couple recently. They have pictures of the house being moved from one area to another. While renovating, they when back and gathered the old bricks that were left behind on the original spot to rebuild the chimneys. Though it doesn’t have the porches that I love in older homes, this one is still absolutely beautiful Kappy. I love the mantles. First house: I'd take it as-is and live in an RV while working on it room by room. (Except that most counties in the PDR of Maryland won't let people do reasonable things like that.) Just gorgeous. Someone at some point was trying to save it, judging by all those house jacks in the basement. Second house: the 1.5 storey portion is older, probably mid-19th c., with a later 19th c. addition once they could afford it as their farm prospered. This is very common in that time. The basement with stone foundations is for the original portion, and you can see how they unwisely just bashed through the foundation to make the crawspace for the addition, which was likely done to run piping for plumbing and for steam heat that is no longer there (you can see the 'dust ghosts' of wall-mounted convectors in a few rooms). Someone made two dwelling units out of it at some point: you can see the spots for two electric metres outside as you first went in. Thanks as always for the interesting explores!

Wow, the first house was great. The 3rd floor was very surprising. I agree with the comment above about how long the place has been empty. The kitchen with that very old cooking appliance, no insulation and what looks to be a single layer of wallpaper on the walls are definite clues that nothing has been updated in a very long time. Not even for rental purposes. The solid roof and a dry basement have preserved it very well. The layout of the second house confused me a great deal and, that basement would have been a hard "no" for me too, although you might have found some Fraggles down there. Thank you, Kappy and have a Happy New Year

Gosh, what a grand old home! It's still in remarkably good condition, with no vandalism! It could easily be restored. 3:30 that old Consolidated stove looks to be possibly from the mid 30s to mid 40s. 4:13 is a Hoosier cabinet, not a built-in. 12:50 yes, that's a radiator. 16:04 is the cistern, used for gathering water for household use. That second house is really strange. Converting it to two apartments left it very broken-up inside! 19:30 those two pillars are a replacement for the wall that used to divide the entrance hallway from that room.

Oh Kappy- you hit another home run with this one! So much living space. And this was built with old growth Timbers- which you won’t find in the box stores today. The kitchen stove was circa 1925 and had been refitted with electric burners. Quite clever. The basement timbers you noticed at abt 15:50 were mortise & tenon construction. Built to last- if you take care of it. It’s a shame the second house had so much remodeling. Thanks Kappy!

That first house! Wow! Straight and true. For me there was a lot of similarities between both houses. And I’m always struck by when you look at the servants stairs, how well worn they are by all the going up and down. I wonder if the third floor on that house could’ve been for the servants.or if they just had a room on the 2nd floor… the second house if you look in the room to the right of the front door, that “odd” wooden out of place thing with columns on it had to be the doorway to another room way back when. But the way it was reconfigured, there wasn’t anything there was there? There was the weird kitchen but there was nothing to the right like another room that I saw…and that was the coolest cellar ever! That big stone cistern in the corner was amazing! We have one in out cellar but half the size! Ours is covered with wood and in my mind because we’ve had a lot of tornado warnings this past year, totally out of the norm up here, I see the cistern as the place to huddle in if one does happen. I’d have been ahead of you going to look in the extension into the side of the cellar! But as someone noted, there were wires and pipes back there so must’ve been when they chopped it up for apts. Thanks for these two! As always a good job!

The first brick reminds me of a farm house in Ohio. The brick was hand made on the land..usually these types are ones built after the civil war.where usually an officer of the war was given 100 acres or more for his service. Most the time there will be a grave yard close for he and his family. Many are not maintained, left for the elements to cover them up. Some have secret doors that were for slaves to hide behind, ususlly around the fireplaces. Thnaks for sharing.

These homes would make excellent Votech projects for budding carpenters ,masons, plumbers, electricians, etc. to bring them back under the supervision of experts. Hands on learning.

Thank you, Kappy, and wishing you all the best 2025, all the way from Sweden! Why don't more people restore than rebuild? It's the same in Sweden.

I'm so glad that you got the chance to film these places. I looked very hard to find the push button light switches. Seems like the 1st place should have had some. House #2 was kinda of strange. Guess it's the upgrades. Really glad you got to film it before someone buys it. At least you got it on film before that happens. Another great video Mr Kappy! Thanks for taking me along!!!!😊

Is easy to picture in one's mind an intact full length front porch setting off this stunning (first) property. I can imagine with that coal furnace in the basement and the radiators that this house was actually pretty warm in the winter. I love the sounds that these old radiators made.
