With Connacht, I douibt Ioane will stay beyond the year, Hanrahan is out for the year so is mainly cover for that. Santiago Cordero is now fully fit, so is as good as a new signing (I think he only played a couple of games last year after injuring himself in his 1st week) Hugh Gavin is a big prospect at center, he's been excellent for the Ireland u20s for the last few years.

Saw Werner Kok in Belfast city centre this afternoon. Looks like he'll be a fun addition to the team. Hope Aidan Morgan settles in quickly, we've no experienced 10s since Billy defected to the Munters. Based on the friendly against Benetton he looks very Mike Lowry-esque, small, quick feet and absolutely fearless. One of our inexperienced 10s, inclidentally, is James Humphreys, son of Ulster and Ireland out-half David Humphreys, just graduated from the academy - if he turns out to be half as good as his dad he'll be a useful player. Also signed Zac Ward, son of NZ-born Ulster and Ireland flanker Andy Ward, who like Humphreys was a member of the 1999 Heineken Cup winning team. Zac's already part of Ulster folklore. His mum went into labour when Andy was playing in the Heineken Cup quarter final against Toulouse, and he had to be subbed off and given a police escort to the hospital to be there at the birth. David Humphreys injured himself making a last-minute try-saving tackle, and Ulster won 15-13. Fortunately both of them were available again for the semi and the final. Defence coach Jonny Bell played inside centre that season.

Ulster have Zac Ward on trial - technically not a transfer. Zac is the son of Andy Ward (ex Ireland and Ulster) and was extremely useful on the Ireland 7's team. If he makes it on to the starting squad I will be really interested to see how he fairs with the 15 game as he was a weapon on the 7's court. Great video and can't wait for the URC to kick off.

Don’t know who Haistings is, but I’m glad Adam Hastings has resigned - we have struggled with the 10 shirt since he moved south a few seasons ago. Tom Jordan has plugged the gap there but he is far more effective at 12. There are also 3 useful props who have come in for this season, 2 young guys and Rory Sutherland , along with a very good young lock forward, which all add to the 4 or 5 youngsters who appeared last season. Add to that a few of the established squad who have all extended their contracts , plus a few players coming back from long term injury and the squad is looking very strong for the coming season.

Some more interesting signings in Scotland. - Rory Sutherland to Glasgow (really adding to that front row). - Ross McCann to Edinburgh from GB7s. Had a massive boff of a Gloucester player in the preseason, my word. - Moesese Tuipulotu to Edinburgh from the Waratahs (Brother of Sione, and also plays centre). Seems to be very similar to his brother but has some very strong handling and passing. Next brother is apparently coming in the next season after he’s done with youth rugby 😂 If you’re gonna do a “players to watch” section, I think Liam McConnell is one to watch. Just signed with Edinburgh, the u20s Scotland captain for a few years. Very much a tadgh Beirne type player but at 6, but apparently is a real feisty one. There’s a story on the Scottish rugby podcast about him getting into a scuffle with the Edinburgh professional team when he was injury cover from academy, and was getting into it with the other players. Chris Paterson said it reminded him of a Bakkies Botha 😂😅

I think the Sharks will be a real threat this year looking at the signings. As a Leinster supporter despite the addition of Synman (currently injured!) and Barret ( not playing till 2025) am concerned at the loss of so many experianced stalwarts who backed up the internationals when away. We have lost Alaatoa, Ross Moloney, Ed Byrne, Jason Jenkins, Rhys Riddock. I watched the pre-season games and feel the young academy players, while promising, are very very green and Leinster this season has a weaker 2nd and 3rd team back up then before. They will get hammered in SA as no way can Leinster send their internationals there as it is directly after the 6 nations...Barret and Synman better be fit to play!!

To be honest I think the Welsh teams could do with signing a few more foreign players. The only issue is I don't think there's much for foreign players to gain from joining a Welsh side. But correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't Tadgh Beirne picked up by the Scarlets before he made it big
@truthbetold8233Ай бұрын
Well Tinus de Beer played for Cardiff and it was obviously beneficial to him, in terms of both getting eyes on his game and playing at this top level, something that he didn't seem to manage in SA. There are loads of similar players here in SA, who could benefit from the move. Effectively anyone from the Cheetahs, Griquas or Pumas squads.

It's an annoying but understandable necessity that Munster were not able to keep Snyman, because both he and Jean Kleyn are Springbok internationals in the same position, and you're only allowed the privilege of having one NIQ player in your squad that occupies that respective position. He was an asset to the team in my book, regardless of how others view it. Seeing him in blue will be tough to get used to. The type of blue I'm not the biggest fan of.....

A general Q for y'all: How much of your team/23/squad needs to be local for you to feel they're still 'your' team? I'm not sure where I stand. I can support the Irish football team even tho most/all of 'em are in via the grandparent rule-but it feels a bit weird when I think about it. Still, the green jersey is the thing, and as long as those guys honor it, I'm good. For smaller places, it's a tension between being local and being a contender. We don't want the big pop centers in SA, England and France sweeping all the competitions all the time-so 'outside' imports have to be made. Munster are mostly Munster guys so I'm fine with my team-how about you?
