Florence is a hidden gem. I spent a month there hanging out enjoying the scenery a number of years ago.

After leaving Florence, US 101 in Oregon finally gets its name "Oregon Coast Highway" back. As you were describing ODOT's ill-fated attempt to get rid of a whale carcass with TNT- I had a feeling that it would go bad, but not like that! I can picture the folks in Florence going, "look up in the sky! It's a bird? It's a plane? It's...whale bits?!" Thankfully, that's the last time ODOT tried anything like that!

Thank you for this journey through Western Oregon. I live in Northeast Oregon (Baker County) and hope to make it out to the Oregon Coast soon.

One time I made a trip to Newport to see Keiko the orca (Free Willy) because they were about to release him into the wild. Coming home to Brookings it took me 9 hours, 7 hours to get to Coos Bay. At that point I ran out of daylight. I hiked down to the edge of the Devil's Churn, drove to the top of Cape Perpetua. Yes, I did it all.

Amazing beauty! Thanks for taking all the side trips, like the Sea Lion Cave, and the Cape Perpetua Overlook. It's amazing how the water makes everything look intensely deep blue. Is this something unique to Oregon? Perhaps some unusual scattering of UV rays? I noticed the same phenomenon at Crater Lake. I can't say that I have ever seen it to this extent, anywhere else.

Been n this route, I understand that the gas station in Yachats is no longer there?
