The Titanic holds us all in morbid attention and for some, they couldn't get enough either, hence the irony of the Titan's demise. They also said that the Titan was normally carried ON a boat/ship, not DRAGGED by the ship. It cost a lot more to put the Titan on a ship, and dragging it was cheaper, which they did drag it. They said the dragging was a threat to the integrity of the Titan’s carbon shell.

The ice breaker they were using as the mothership was not certified to launch deep sea submersible craft. They would have been breaking the law to carry it on the deck, so they dragged it to get around the law through a technicality. I've heard that Canada is going to be up the owner's ass since they knew they were circumventing the law, but they were just greedy.

The Navy heard it immediately and knew exactly what it was. Back in the '70s a Russian sub imploded about 1600 mi north of Hawaii. The Navy's sonar net in the Pacific was advanced enough at that time to where they located it and was able to recover it later on. The sonar net we have today is far more advanced and they hear everything that's going on under the ocean

There is NO excuse for avoiding non invasive testing on the core and attach points. Carbon fiber was making cracking noises. It was deteriorating from each dive. Tests would have shown this. This was inevitable.

As a former sonar supervisor on submarines, I have a theory about the “banging” noise. The fact that it was every half hour is very telling. If it were humans signaling an sos, they wouldn’t do it briefly every 30 minutes, it would be as frequent as possible and somewhat chaotic. The predictable timing of the noise is likely from some automated mechanical source. Likely sources are drilling rigs, commercial fishing, or even sounds of another ship or submarine. Due to convergence zones in the ocean, sounds can occur from many hundreds, and even thousands, of miles away, yet sound extremely close.

Your theory is rubbish. I happen to know that in the navy they are trained to bang on the hull of a submarine every 30 minutes. So it will have been those trapped inside the tin can signalling to those at the surface etc they were alive.

this is untrue, they teach Submariners to bang just like that for a few mins each 30 so that it doesnt blend into the background sound of the sea, its very loud in the sea so the sound stopping and starting makes it harder to miss.

It’s definitely possible that you’ve been there more recently than I have. I was taught to tap the hull in the SOS pattern, pause briefly and repeat. The CP (casualty procedure) doesn’t say to stop for 30 minutes in between. If you aren’t tapping SOS, you are to tap in random patterns. As a sonar supervisor, it’s very difficult to tell the difference between a machine knock or a person tapping, if it is a steady beat. If it’s every 30 mins exactly, it’s a machine on a timer. You listen for chaotic patterns or time intervals that wouldn’t be programmed. What subs did you serve on?

For the people concerned about the cost, when I was in The Navy in the early 80's we loved to lend a hand to anyone in need out at sea. We are normally doing exercises and it was wonderful for us to be able to help when we could. As far as the Coastguard goes that is their job.

They waited eight hours, because in the past there had been problems, and the sub did come to the surface after many hours. So they weren’t going to report it until they were sure that the sub was not going to surface. It makes total sense from their point of view, considering that at one point the sub had been lost for six hours, and did finally surface when it dropped its ballast.

I am a retired Saturation diver having spent over 9,000 / 10,000 hours living at depths of 600mtrs and breathing Helium mixed gas ; all of our diving systems were constructed from high grade steel as are all underwater submersibles so when I first heared of a system being constructed from Spun Carbon Fiber I knew that it was only a mater of time before we would all share this tragedy. 💙 To all friends and relatives please be assured that appart from the initial horror no pain or awareness of the final collapse would have been felt .

Something that most you tubers don't acknowledge is that the sub was at a depth of 3500 ft not the 12500 ft that some would like everyone to believe, that only sensationalizes the tragedy. Another thing is that body remains were recovered, how much how many or who has not been revealed and not talked about simply out of respect for the families involved. Try looking at the public news conference held by Pelagic Research Services that owns the Odysseus 6K deep water ROV; they arrived at the dive scene from Buffalo NY in record time. There were no other ROVs capable of reaching the depth of the Titanic, although several from different countries (and the US) were already on site and one had been destroyed in trying to exceed its depth to get down to the required depth to search.. Odysseus arrived on June 22, prepared to do a rescue. It took that long to pack and crate this behemoth ROV and it's tools and support crew, fly it to St. John's, and transport it by ship to the titanic wreck site (from St. John's to the wreck site takes 16-18 hours, with more time to set it up and launch it). THERE WERE NO DELAYS AT ANY. POINT. That story that the Military was holding things up is is a bit of fraud on the part of some ambulance chaser. In fact, there were NO delays anywhere.

When a vessel on or in the sea goes missing, they are in search/rescue mode until physical evidence shows no hope of survivors. Once they have that physical evidence, the mission becomes a recovery effort. In the case of Titan, physical evidence of the wreckage turned it into a recovery effort. Had they passed the 96 hour mark (also considered physical evidence) without finding anything, that also would have turned it into a recovery effort. At the time it was deployed, the Odysseus 6K ROV was fitted with equipment to lift the Titan from the bottom, because it was still a rescue mission at that point. This was the first ever implosion of a small submersible at depth, and would probably present as more of a "pop than a boom," like a large metal submarine. The Navy had no precedent for identifying the anomaly they discovered in their recorded data, so they could not say with certainty that it was an implosion, only that it was "consistent with" an explosion or implosion.

As an astronomer, I'm fascinated by the deep sea and what it takes to get there. Most people don't understand the physics, but the pressure around us is 1 atmosphere and when we go to space it's zero atmospheres, so a difference of 1 atmosphere. But when we go down 1km, the pressure difference is about 100 atmosphere! At 10km it's 1000 atmospheres! So, in a sense, it's 1000x more difficult and dangerous to go to the bottom of the sea, 10km down, than millions of miles into space (of course, we have radiation and other worries with space...).

Critical thinking may have saved some lives. Even someone like me who has minimal knowledge of carbon fiber knows going down to the bottom of the ocean in a cf tube is probably not a good idea. I am amazed it lasted several dives tbh.

I am not sure this is a correct statement. Yes Carbon Fibre has properties that are not ideal for a sub, but it also has properties, which are ideal for use in a sub. I see no scientific reason why you could not build a safe sub from carbon fibre. It is just more challenging, and actually a more professional company was working on a carbon fibre sub to go to the challenger deep, which has 3 times the pressure of a trip to the Titanic. Clearly the Titan was not this safe carbon fibre sub, but for all its flaws an amateurish construction it did still last several dives to the Titanic, which in itself is an indication that you probably could do an improved version that was safe. All it would take would probably be 25% extra redondancy, better quality control between dives and a more professional construction method. Oceangate reportedly cut corners in both quality of carbon fibre, uni directional layering, lack of curing, etc. Whether you should is another question, as a safer and better tested alternative exist, and after the Titan it way be a while before anyone tries again. But given that we use carbon fibre hybrid constructions in airplanes, F1 cars and in spaceflight, I would certainly not rule out that we in the future figure out safe way to use it for subs as well, and Ocengate was right about one thing. Unless we try and test things, we will never learn. Just dont use a “tourist” sub as your test vehicle with humans on board …..

Check the glue between the titanium ring and the carbon fiber cylinder. Was the glue properly mixed. Was it exactly the same thickness all the way around? Were there voids or air bubbles in the glue. Watch the video of several guys smearing it on the surfaces with glop covered spatulas. Were the two parts exactly centered so the glue thickness was perfectly uniform or is it possible that they dropped it into a slightly lopsided configuration leaving thick glue on one side and very thin glue on the other? About the question posed (@6:41), banging on a steel hull with a metallic object would be way more likely to be heard as opposed to fist pounding on a synthetic hull, further muffled by an outer cover of sheet plastic. Wish they would have shared the information about the implosion sound when they got it because not sharing that information and holding press conferences about searches, they gave the families false hope during the search (some people knew like James Cameron). knocking was from something else.

That's your opinion. They were pretty sure but held out on the possibilty they could still be alive..you are wanting them to tell the family and not even try to insure the sub didn't surface and then wait several days till they found the sub confirming an implosion so they could tell the family, see, we told you they were dead, you wanted us to look, for what?...really that's how you view this?

@@Mikeb8134 it took days to get subs out there to search for the titan..you guys keep thinking it's downtown LA and help is seconds away..you always hope for survivors and never give up until something can be confirmed.. Even the banging was a false alarm..

James Cameron didn't necessarily know beyond doubt, because the deep sea microphone readings weren't out by then, although he did have confidence in it being an implosion.

My guess is that the mystery sounds were parts of the submersible bumping into each other on their way down to the bottom. My heart goes out to the families of those who were lost in this dreadful catastrophe. 💙
