Today the Chinese military has been build up to be a large enough competitor to justify America's defense budget. And now the breaks are being applied to any further Chinese growth. The intelligence community knew from the start that China would just become a large North Korea. The police state the communists built since 1949 show their intention to never lose power. The Chinese spend more money policing themselves and spying on themselves than they do on all their international activities (military included) combined. America will now pull the factories out of China and leave it without a consumer base. Threatening enough to justify further American military spending, but not threatening enough to actually win.

The Chinese communists aren't going to be a pushover. They have a sophisticated enough military that we can't just engage in a few SEAD sorties and sink their navy. The smart play would be to declare a blockade of all merchant shipping in and out of China and enforce it by sinking anyone who does not comply. China would be in extremely serious trouble if that were done. China is vastly dependent on imported goods for fuel and food. But our political leadership lacks the moral courage for such a move, because it would mean telling third party countries what they can and cannot do. The island of Taiwan was controlled by the Japanese before and up to their defeat by the USA and so I think the USA called the shots of post WW2 terms of surrender on restructuring things dealing with Japan. The USA was Victor and liberator not China.
