I was security in a hotel where the mixed national curling championships were happening. That week, my job was to try to keep the curlers quiet enough so that the other guests were not disrupted. I was very friendly, and they all liked me and called me by name, but I didn’t have to stop them from playing miniature golf in the hallways and running around the hotel topless. I was 20, I was definitely younger than any of the curlers. When I would finish my shift at 3 AM, they would want me to come party with them, even though I was the killjoy, asking them to keep it down.

Yeah, there's a lot of drinking culture in curling and it's customary to have a glass with your opponent post game - we call it broom stacking. Apparently at the club I curl at people sometimes get too drunk, pass out, and stay the night there, though I've never stayed late enough to see it happen myself

what gets me about you is that I've never seen you do the same joke/story twice, nor reformat the same punchline to a different set up. I've seen several comics over multiple years where they did verbatim the same set to the exact note, which was a major let down. but you... you never stop coming up with fresh material. like how you can do a special when all of your work now is so damn good and fresh... I'm a life long diehard fan of stand up and the culture around it and you sir are an absolute S-Tier comic
@Eoin-B
@Eoin-B 3 ай бұрын
Idk, sets usually rotate every 2 or 3 years for most comics, the reason why specials only come out every couple of years, slowly swapping out jokes with the new ones that worked in between. This guy is incredible, but still he's an anomaly in the industry and you cant expect the rest to do that.

All of this is literally what the OPs comment was about but for some reason you needed to state it in a semiargumentive "I Know better than you " reply . Am I understanding your intentions correctly?

He's genuinely funny. There's a reason he's a writer for the shows he's written for. He plucks stuff that is actually happening and just reframes it into the most beautifully hilarious takes. My Grandma told me about a plane crash in 1945 in New Guinea. Only 3 Survivors, out of 24 on the manifest ... one of which was an American woman. Rescue could not be attempted for weeks as the War raged in the Pacific. It took time, but eventually they got a radio to work slightly. The Lady Soldier asked if they could drop "pads" for her. Just her. As the request went up the chain of command each person must have doubled the request to be helpful. They dropped food, medicine and CRATES of the pads. Their friends had died ... in some cases slowly and with gruesome injuries. everyone was ill, injured, starving so nothing was funny. When they opened the crates the 3 of them were crying laughing. In the end though they used the pads to carry stretchers on shoulders, kindling, wound dressings, etc and it all worked out. In that era the 2 men and the Media would never speak on this as it was too intimate. As for Command, Bless their Hearts... they Tried! Bwahahaha! 😂

I live in The Netherlands (I’m Dutch) and I am extremely over the top picky when it comes to stand-up comedy. There are very few who I like, and out of them I only love Bill Burr. I discovered your channel only recently, and I have watched already so much of your videos. You are absolutely gifted when it comes to being a comedian, they way you build up your stories is really fun. I’m looking very much forward to seeing more of your videos ❤

I'm picky when it comes to comedians as well. I love Bill Burr but it's somewhat predictable when you will laugh. With Josh, it's very hard to predict when you will smirk, smile, laugh inside, laugh out loud, or laugh so loud the neighbors can hear. This is why it's very hard to take a sip of a cold one while listening/watching Josh; because you don't want to spit out your drink on your keyboard or on the friends you're with. I think that's what makes a comedian great. ALso, i could never be in a live audience with this guy because my annoying loud laugh would be nearly the only thing you could hear

The thing about sports like the shotput being less impressive when regular people do them got me wondering for the first time how people become something like an elite shot putter. Like if you interview a pro basketball player or something about how they got into the sport you get something like "I always loved playing basketball. I would play in the park and in my driveway and everywhere and then I found out I could get paid to play basketball and knew that's what I wanted to do." But imagine that for a shot putter. "I just always liked throwing canon balls and then someone told me there were professional cannon ball throwers I knew that's what I was going to do." Like, what does the casual to pro arc look like for a shot putter or a long jumper or something? Are there kids out there who just chuck canon balls in their backyards with their friends for fun?

Not sure if you're looking for a real answer or not, but the pathway to professional athletics (track and field in the US) is pretty similar to other sports! Athletics has clubs just like any other sports club, but instead of being dedicated to a single event like basketball, they encompass multiple (more or less all running events, jumping events, throwing events etc). I was in a youth athletics club when I was younger, and we were encouraged to sign up for a variety of events at our meets every week in order to try things out and find what we liked. I never stuck with it, but my friends that did eventually found their groove in a handful of events that they really excelled at and would focus on those in training. The general expectation in athletics is that you'll find a specialisation by the time you reach a competitive/professional level i.e. shot put. I imagine a lot of pro shot putters were in athletics clubs as kids and just found they really enjoy or excelled at shot put, so stuck with it. (It's similar to swimming; no one is joining a swim club as a kid because they specifically want to swim the 500m butterfly, but they end up specialising in it.)

He's never met someone who was a horse-girl? I'm a city girl and I've loved horses since I was a kid. Loving horses seems to be a thing for most little girls, see media that capitalize on it. I don't know if little boys go through a similar lifelong phase of loving horses, but I know that it's definitely a thing among little girls.

Wait a minute -the Olympics are THIS YEAR? How was I unaware of that, with MORE access to news than ever before? When I was a kid in the 80's you couldn't escape awareness of the Olympics even if you wanted to. To be honest I don't care about sports whatsoever and they're the last thing that would make me feel "patriotic" (whatever that means) .... but I used to at least have some awareness of one or two athletes who were inspiring in some way. Now, I literally forgot that the games are always the same year as the presidential election. -Seems like that swallows everything nowadays, and even I have to admit that's kinda sad.

Ok, this is gonna sound like a joke, but it's a true story and I seriously recommend it to everyone, Josh is so right about Curling. I was on a weekend get away with my fiancee back about 10 years ago... We were in the hotel room and women's curling happened to be on... As we were just relaxing and starting to get a little frisky we "thank goodness" never turned off the TV... The womens curls teams SCREAM different things during competition... So as my fiancee and I are in the throws of passion, it's as tho I have a literal cheerleading section behind me on the TV... I keep hearing "HAAAAAARRRRRDDDD....GO HAAAARRRRDDD...." Then cheering and high fives... Simple to say it wasn't the last time we watched women's curling during love making 👍
