I used to do this back in the 90s, but with cash, at Bank of America. What you do is you go to the ATM put some cash in the BoA envelope (or none if you're daring) and input more than what you actually put in. There's a limit to what you can take back out obviously but if you're in a bind and need a couple hundred bucks or so, it worked splendidly. They'd send you a letter and state there was a discrepancy and it needs to be corrected. They can't prove you didn't put the wrong amount by accident so They'd just stress you need to get the funds and fix it. Which I would when I got paid.

The most expensive meal I never ate. So if you are planning on stealing food, and they are onto you or start yelling out at you, cram that food in your gob ASAP. I found out later they threw that sandwich out. It was a tuna on rye. I'll never know how good or bad that sandwich may have been. I slept hungry that night and couldn't stop thinking about it as I fell asleep. Also, if you're that desperate for food, if I see you in your situation... No I didn't. Speaking as someone who was homeless for a short time and going hungry, I admit: I shoplifted food once. I hadn't stolen anything since I was a kid. Did 6 years in the Army, came back, struggled. And it got to the point that the night before payday I hadn't eaten in three days, and I couldn't handle it anymore. Walked into the local grocery store and slid a can of soup up my sleeve. Walked out feeling all manner of anxiety and guilt. But that soup helped me get through to the next day, so I could lay down and sleep because I had to work in the morning. I ended up moving back home after that (but not until after selling plasma to eat, which was another low in my life). And I've not stolen a single thing in the 20 years since that happened. You don't know what someone is going through. You don't know how they're dealing with shit. So if you see someone shoplifting food: no you didn't.

Omg Josh!! Grandma aint a snitch - I can’t believe this rings true but let me tell you about my Soviet Russian grandma, Militrissa Ivanovna. She was not a typical grandmother - she hated cooking, she took care of her grandkids over the summer but only out of a sense of obligation, she was a bibliographer. She adored my dad, her only child, to pieces, but only after he learned to speak in complete sentences. One of those summers when she took care of me, at our dacha (summer cabin with a little garden)… I was about 12 and my friends were 10-12. Late 90’s or early 2000’s Russia, where elementary school kids could buy vodka “for my grandpa” - at least in rural areas like our dacha. I host a sleepover. We buy cocktails and get drunk in the woods. My younger friends get alcohol poisoning, I and my peer friend take care of them, my grandma observes and knows exactly what is happening. So she’s like - hey I’m telling their grandparents. I’m like, no grandma, please, they will KILL them, we will never be allowed to hang out again. So she says - fine, I was your age once, go take care of your friends. And what do my friends tell their parents the next day, when they are still sick? That they got food poisoning from my grandma’s food, which is sadly believable 🫠

My husband was also laid off from his job at the same time we were signing our mortgage and i did not receive any raise at all (not a cent) from 2008-2011 even though i got promotions. I've had to do $100k+ work on on the house because the foundation was bad, the plumbing was bad, the plumbing line was bad too the road, we had to redo all the electrical there was a lot that had to be done. Okay, so there's this place in my town called the Rescue Mission that gives you a cooked meal and a free turkey for Thanksgiving if you go to their church service. It's big and crowded and lots of people go testify and get saved and all. (I'm a vegetarian Jew, yet still managed to wind up there 25 years ago.) Anyway, there are people at various places in their lives, mostly in hard spots, and lots of Bibles and hymnals around. When the crazy lady started screaming at folks and hitting the man in front of her with a Bible, well, it was sad but also really really really funny. Thanks, Josh, for bringing that memory back. I also appreciate that you might be AI, but i saw you live, so I'm still leaning toward human, just really hard working (and consistently funny and insightful in ways I don't see from AI).

Common law actually has always differentiated crime to survive from regular crime and required lesser penalties but now adays almost no one understands the difference. It is far worse to steal for the thrill or greed than out of poverty the rich are very good at getting us concentrated on the poor instead of the rich.

Reminds me of when I was in high school. This teacher was pretty new, a survivor of Hurricane Katrina, traveled from South all the way up to Philly to start over, and continue teaching the youth. Bruh, he went to break up a fight between two students, like a good teacher might, and the two students turned on him and began beating him up. Even threw one of those chair desk combos at him. I never forgot that. Came all the way from surviving a hurricane...just to be hit with a desk chair. smh. My school was rough rough.
