Usain Bolt's 9.58 100m world record from Berlin turned 15 years old on August 16. How long will this record last? No one today is coming close to it. Tyson Gay and Yohan Blake were sort of in the same ballpark but Noah Lyles is .21 slower. The Jamaican legend's record could last another decade easily.

People still don’t understand what 9.58s actually is. Bolt was the perfect storm- unparalleled power generation, excellent turnover, 9 foot stride length made his top speed untouchable. Add to that his incredible speed endurance and it’s just a performance so far beyond his time, it’ll take another 20years before the event is at that level

It was a freak run. That even Bolt couldnt get again. No sprinter under 6 3" can ever challenge it. Which is why it's going to last decades. The only way it could ever be challenged in the next 20 years. To even be equalled. Is a billionaire. Would have to pay hundreds of gifted tall athletes. Who would otherwise end up in the NBA or NFL to take up sprinting. Out of that pool would emerge a few talents capable of going low 9.6. Its a numbers game. There simply aren't enough TALL sprinters in the sport. Asafa Powell was 6 3" and he was fast 9.72 His best. Fred Kerley is 6 3" and has run 9.76. That's what it takes. Plenty of tall sprinters in the game. Bolt was 6 5.5" No man standing 5 11" is ever going to get close. Im actually more impressed with Seville than Bolt. That a man only standing 5 7" can run 9.81.

@@fender1000100 I'm really not sure if that's the case but please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm pretty sure that there are and have been tall sprinters in the world. The problem however is that tall sprinters have it much worse in their start and acceleration. The one that comes to mind is a Jamaican athlete who was in the Moscow 2013 WC finals. From there you can clearly see his very poor start and acceleration. So while they do have it better for their top speed, it's hardly an advantage as it is a disadvantage. That's the reason why I think we rarely see top performing tall athletes instead of them entering into other sports as track talent is I think (which very well might be wrong) much easier to discover than basketball or talents in other field. What truly separates bolt apart is his freakish start (0-30m split is i think 3.79), insane acceleration from 30m-60 the fastest ever of 2.50s and of course the fastest top speed in conjunction with all that.

@@fender1000100 Yes but 9.81 is world's away from 9.58 which is other worldly. A healthy Seville running all out can run 9.75. A healthy Kishane running all out to the line can run 9.69. Both need a lil wind assistant of +1.3 or above. Bolts 9.58 will stand another 30+ yrs unless Kishane Thompson trims down 15pds and runs it within the next two years. He'll need +2.0 wind on the perfect track, with the best competition, in his very best shape. And that's still a BIG "maybe"

Let's just break it down: that's 6.31s at 60m. Additionally, he split 3.27s from 60...100m. Only 3 sprinters have split 6.31s or sub: Su, Asafa and Bolt and that's it. Nowadays, sprinters are struggling to even go sub 6.4s... They're 0.1s behing at the 60m mark already... Only 2 people have split sub 3.34s, that's Usain and Gay. Only one guy (Bolt) has ever gone sub 3.32s... and in his 9.58s, he split 3.27s. His record is ridiculous... He also split 3.78s at 30m in that race, lol. His "weakest" segment is 0-10m, which a few people have topped.

Never would've thought his 19.19 (-0.3) WR in his favourite 200m event would end up being his 'softest' WR as he was capable of taking another 0.1 - 0.2s off it with fresher legs, a cleaner last 50m where he wasn't rocking from side-to-side & being chased by Prime 19.26 (+0.7) Yohan Blake in a nice 1.5m/s+ tailwind! Also, after running a fantastic 30.97 in his sole 300m attempt in May 2010, wish Bolt went into a good 4wk training block then spent the rest of JUL & AUG getting as close as possible to MJ's 43.18 400m WR :( If he stays healthy, can see Kishane in the right race conditions potentially running 9.68 for #2 all-time!

I do agree Bolt could have gone faster in the 200m, but who do you see breaking it? Noah Lyles doesn't seem to be able to split sub 10.15s in the curve, so no way Lyles is going anywhere near. Main issue I see with 19.19s is that it wasn't run on fresh legs. So, Bolt could have gone faster. That does not mean anyone is close atm. 9.92s in the curve sets that record apart imo. Of course 9.58s is harder for sure, more so because Bolt was running on fresher legs when he ran that 9.58s.

My track and field educated guess is that 9.58 will stand for another 30yrs or more. Just like Sydney McLaughlins 400H WRs will when she's done. They're simply out of reach. Those two are once in a lifetime athletes. Both breaking WRs in the finals after running several previous rounds is Absurd!. Lyles isn't in Bolts league and all he does is talk World Record..it ain't happening. 19.19 isn't some walk in the park either. My guess is Tebogo will break that within the next 3 years if he focuses on it. Tebogo can break the 400WR as well if he focuses on it. His 300WR came easily. With his age the skies the limit for him. But 9.58 by Bolt will stand arguably forever. Taller athletes like him don't run track. They play basketball. *Kishane has a small window of opportunity to break it. Like next year at altitude with +2.0 wind with him losing 15pd and in his best possible fitness on the perfect track on the perfect day

The 19.19 200m record will stand for longer, I think. In the 100m, Bolt hadn't the quickest first 20 metres, so someone with a huge stride, a fast top speed, and a QUICK first 20 metres could possibly beat it... but not until that type of person is born. If Carl Lewis was of this era, he would threaten it (with today track and running shoe technology), but we'll have to wait for a while for the next Lewis/Bolt to surface, I reckon.
