Use Basic Tools To Quickly And Easily Diagnose Simple Automotive Electrical Circuits

Automotive electrical circuit diagnosis isn't always simple but, approaching each issue with an efficient test method helps you reach the solution more efficiently. In this video, we share the process I use when diagnosing a simple electrical circuit. In this case, it happens to be testing for an inop blower motor. Enjoy!

Loved the use of the diagram and walk through of what you were going to test and where you were putting the leads and showing us in the real world. That is how you teach. Outstanding. Your presentation and execution is perfect. On a flat rate question. I was a gm tech so in that world many techs after find this same problem one time would probably go straight to that connector and wiggle it as a first step. Keep doing what your doing!

It's a scope...Scope on a rope! I recently helped a guy on the Honda Odyssey forums who had done all the same stuff....I guided him with some testing to a bad HVAC control head on a 2007 Odyssey. Had never seen it before on the Odyssey but the testing, if you know what you're doing, doesn't lie. He ordered a control head from eBay and a few days later posted that it was fixed! He was quite happy...although he also had a new transistor and blower motor from before I started helping him. Good stuff here!

Great videos. I like them a lot! This is method I use to diagnose electrical faults. I was taught to listen for a click on a relay circuit that controls all circuits (high and med and med and low). Also when diagnosing a fault on the circuit you are looking for one fault only (unless somebody has been trying to fix it and let things disconnected or broken) so we will eliminate lot of circuit 1/turn the knob/switch to any position, lets say high 2/listen for click of the relay, no click your problem is on control side of the relay (either bad relay, open/shorted + wire, open - wire, BCM switch internally broken) if you hear a click your problem is on the switch side of the relay 3/at blower motor connected back probe pin 1 if you read 12 V you just eliminated bad + wire, open fuse if you read 0V check them back probe pin 2 if you read 0V then you have a bad blower motor, if you read 12V, you have good motor. Your problem is on the ground side below pin 2. We can eliminate problem between S202 and resistor pin C also between S202 and pin E,F,G,H because we are only looking for one fault, any fault between these would not cause all setting not to work. Our fault is either bad wire between blower motor pin 2 and S202 or heater switch of the HVAC control module or ground wire from module pin B to C201 to F to G106. 4/Checking at splice S202 is not easy so lets take our hvac module aka switch out and back probe pin E (thats our high setting), if you read 12V then between blower motor pin 2 and splice S202 we don't have any open, if you read 0V you have open wire in that location and you are now forced to check S202 5/ hvac module backprobe pin B if you read 0V you have bad switch, if you read 12V you have a good switch 6/C201 back probe pin A5 if you read 12 V no open on that wire, OV your open is between C201 and pin B. 7/back probe pin F 12V no open 0V open between pin F and C201 8/ G106 0V open between G106 and pin F Hope this makes sense!

Follow the voltage/current path. Along the way in this case, check the "G1xx" ground by substituting a "known good ground." Circuit now works, back track to locate problem. Sounds simple, and in this case, like you said, it is a fairly simple circuit. It's called "signal (or power) tracing." It worked for me in the past. Intermittents are a different animal, but basics still are the rule to follow. Good one Mike!

When you saw a problem on GND side, I thought you were going to go straight to G106 body GND, but I guess that would be the equivalent to testing the fuse first. Must start at load and work your way out. Very good lesson even for a DYIer.

Thats the right way of troubleshooting which is by ellimination. Test the load side first, then squeeze it down to the faulty component. Some inexperience technician are jumping from one place to the other instead of following the trail. Most common issue on electrics are corrosion, either at the connectors or inside the wires itself, especially when other technicians used an insulation peircing clamps.

Hey Mike. Always great to see your videos. I agree with others that some wiring diagram understanding videos would benefit so many including myself. And also knowing what to expect at any given point in the circuit. For example at your blower motor, if you had 12v at both wires while still plugged in, you would also know there is no ground and that the 12v passes thru the coil in the motor and on through the rest of the ground side circuit. Question, before you fixed the block, with the blower switch turned on, would you have read 12v at the ground block? I'm sure you would have on that particular wire anyways. just remember that there is no standard per se. each manufacturer will do things a bit different. a good diagram will contain a legend just like a map explaining what the nomenclature means

Thanks awesome vid, about the dielectric grease, know thats recommended but I do have a tiny bit of confusion on that, when looking at the tube of it doesn't have any conductive properties, does this mean the pin cleans the grease off on the way in to make a good contact in the terminal? and the grease just stops water ingress into the connection?

Really good video, very straightforward and informative! Quick question: What do you use to locate specific connectors on the vehicle? If I'm using alldata can I just search "G106" and get a picture with the location? Or is there something better for that sort of thing? In this instance its not a huge deal but say I'm looking for a specific splice in the harness, I don't want to go tearing the whole dash apart looking for it!

Hey ApostleXIII, thanks for watching! Yes, you can search locations in Alldata, but typically I just use the location finder on the right side of the page. It lists them all out in numerical order and I just pick the one I'm looking for. Hi Mike. I’m curious as to the liberal use of dielectric grease on the actual terminals of the connector. I understand that the intention here is to prevent corrosion in this instance. By definition a dielectric is an insulator and therefore presumably not desirable to get on conducting surfaces. In your experience does the application of grease produce any appreciable increase in resistance?

Hey DJR, thanks for watching! No, I have never seen adverse effects to the dielectric grease. The pins, male to female, make a physical connection. Therefore, the dielectric grease is a non-factor at those connection points. The goal is to fill the other space with the grease so water/air can't get to it and cause corrosion. If you don't mind, maybe you talk about your jumper wire in a future lesson? I thought you said "fuse jumper" but I see it's a "fused jumper" with a 20A fuse inline. Is that just so you don't blow a fuse in the box or damage another component? -- I'm new here :)

For instance I've had some issues where cars would have had dielectric grease put on computer module connectors causing comm issues. Is their a certain level of comfortably using grease on higher load circuits?

Hey Nick, this is a great question that everyone seems to have differing opinions on. A quality dielectric grease should never cause issues, it's just there to take up the air...not letting moisture in. It should never conduct electricity, therefore never cause issues. @GOTECH How in the world do you break loose the harmonic balancer bolt on 3.5L inline 5 on a 2005 chevrolet colorado. Tried using the flywheel lock that alldata specified but the transmission bell housing case won't allow the tool to be inserted. Any suggestions?

Hello, You could try and get a hold of a harmonic balancer holding tool like the J 38122-A or something like it. It looks like the balancer has a design where you could hold the balancer itself. Otherwise an impact wrench if you can fit it down there. Hope this helps! ~Ryan

Isn't there a risky chance to damage computer with old style Test lamp, because old lamp can flow higher current ? Then there are new style of Test lamp with LED, which not draw too much current.

Hey GameBacardi, the simple answer is yes, in some circuits. You would not want to plug the test light into a signal circuit or a reference voltage circuit or something like that. My rule of thumb is to always look at the load in the circuit....if it draws more than .5 amps, I'm throwing an old-school test light on it...if it's less, than a DVOM, LED test light, or scope are going to be used. Hey Jerry, I have subscriptions to both Alldata and Identifix. They do both cost quite a bit. I really haven't found a super reliable place that offers them free. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
