P.S. I understand you're doinf basics essentially for beginners. You also show Volume and Panning automation envelopes only. . Can you add more? In cakewalk I have automation envelopes for everything in plugins, plus anything that a MIDI keyboard can do.

We’re definitely working on some more advanced tutorials.

When I click on the little box with the z, nothing expands below the track :( not sure what I'm doing wrong. I do get a pop up that says "Expand Envelope."

S1 creates those two automations for audio files (wav loops etc). For intruments (vst's) you need to automate something first to see it. You can press f4 to open inspector, right click on volume fader or pan section and select "edit automation". From there yuo'll be able to expand/collapse those automations

Audio will give you a volume and pan lines, but as PhreaSpirit explains for an instrument track it won't. Automation is simulating moving a fader up and down, like at one time people had to literally do while doing a mix down. Since an instrument track is digital or MIDI based, there is no "fader" but parameters. Spirit explained how to exactly right.
