Unironically it probably is for them. Russians really have gotten screwed. They had a damn revolution to overthrow the czars, only for Stalin to take over just a few years in and kill even more civilians...then Stalin dies, they try their best to move away from him but the whole has been falling apart, people are in poverty and the end is near... must have been brutal, a story of 3 generations of suffering. Ironically it's still pretty bad, the economic woes and the authoritarianism came back pretty fast all things considered.

As an Afghan, I appreciate the Soviet Union for trying to help defend my country against the Western-backed Mujahideen (even though the Soviets lost in the end). USSR even threatened China that if they interfere in the war then USSR will attack Xinjiang. As a result India still exists as a country or else literally half the world would've bombed the $hit out of us and many countries would've been made out of India. With the collapse of USSR, India went into deep economic crisis in 1991 as we lost our biggest trade and strategic partner and we lost the scary navy that we built because it was hard to maintain it in economic crisis and now, China has started to challenge us in Indian Ocean.

Gorbachev had realized that the Soviet economy could not continue to be 100% state-owned. The market economy had to be implemented step by step to prevent the collapse.

None of the soviet leaders after 1956 were communist... Gorbachev realised the imperialist monster that the ussr had become and dissolved it, but he wasn't a communist. Trotsky would have been fatal to the ussr, he was only an opportunist who seaked power
