Yes, Palpatine had changed Anakin into Vader, but it makes sense that he would call him "Skywalker" as a way to antagonize him into abandoning his past attachments. At this point in time, he is not Anakin anymore, but still not quite Vader yet. The whole point of the episode is to explore his transition.

The set that most of the short takes place in (the "throne room?") looks awful. Really bare, basic, like a set from a 1960's TV show. Credit to them for trying, but it looks totally awful. They could've built a fraction of the set, then green/blue screen the rest for what we call a "set extension" in CGI world. There are also a lot of awkwardly tight shots, which is typical of low-budget or fan films.

It's almost never a good thing for you to have to move your eyes from one end of the frame to the other to se what's happening.

Anub1s0 I know your comments old but I thought I’d respond too. Although I do agree with you on some of your complaints, I still think most of their critiques were valid( ex. The emperor’s appearance looking silly). Just because the guy worked really hard on this doesn’t mean you can’t criticize it. I’ve disagreed with their opinions on many occasions so I don’t expect them to like everything I like. My point though is that it seems everyone’s putting SW theory on a pedestal when it’s more than fair to analyze critically his content. All that being said I actually enjoyed the short for the most part and wish it had gotten a chance to continue.

Been waiting so so much for this one. Didn't bother you about it since I knew hundreds of people would be clamoring for it. What a great fan film. I agree with Zack below on Palpatine's appearance, though that's a function of makeup and lighting as much as anything. The cinematography was not superb, and that's actually one of the few things George Lucas still does really well. He was always a technician first, and a finer camera operator than most directors. If you watch the dreaded Holiday Special, Bea Arthur's song & dance number was filmed on the original Cantina set with all the original costumes, and it looks so incredibly fake. It's a testament to George Lucas's cinematography that he took that same low-budget space and made it so visually convincing in the original film. Cinematography and a better attention to light & shadow would have made the long throne room scene and Palpatine's appearance infinitely better here. That said, Bradley Klein's Emperor voice was spot-on. At its best moments, it was closer to RotJ's Ian McDiarmid than even RotS's Ian McDiarmid was. It helps that whoever did the dialogue gave both him and Vader very in-character modes of speaking, and a chance to hit some of the iconic phrases that both used in the movies. But even then, he made slightly different choices about inflection than Ian McDiarmid did, the way he hit "foolish boy" and spat out the name "Skywalker" were not carbon copies of Palpatine's sound bites, they were a new delivery perfectly in keeping with the original. The screenwriters REALLY paid attention to the dialogue. I especially liked, and was SURPRISED that I liked, the way Palpatine's dialogue reflected Lawrence Kasdan's dialogue writing from RotJ, and yet Padmé's one line, "my caring for you will always remain," would have been stilted and awkward in any other love story, but works because it EXACTLY evokes the stilted awkward courtship language in Attack of the Clones. The more I think about it, this is a film that works because it perfectly captures a LOT of different Star Wars sources with a lot of different flavours. The Emperor is clearly built around RotJ, which is the best decision, and yet Padmé and the clones are pitch-perfect Prequel Trilogy, and yet Vader's action directly captures the tone and feel of Rogue One, though his body language perfectly channels the slightly out-of-sync pointing and gestures of A New Hope. I think they even went beyond the movies: that shot of Vader hanging without his armor comes straight out of Rick Leonardi's illustrations in the Dark Horse comic "Darth Vader and the Lost Command." I think the shot of him stopping all those blaster bolts is straight out of the comics too, years before Kylo Ren ever did it to just one, but I can't seem to remember where.

I liked the whole nightmare sequence. To me it was more of vision of Anakin/Vader trying to come up with a way to kill Palpatine. Remember what Yoda told Luke about visions, they allow a Jeki to see into the past, the present, and the different possibilities in the future. Vader is trying to bury Anakin but needs Anakin's loss and suffering to fuel his connection to the Dark Side. I can imagine that Vader has had this same nightmare/vision for a long time. For instance when Vader uses the dead Emperor's Guard body to block the Force Lightening during the nightmare and then notice the look Vader has when Palpatine orders the guards out of the chamber....damn there went that plan. Even in his dreams and nightmares, Vader can't find a way to defeat Palpatine (yet) or bury Anakin. Vader does not know the extent of Palpatine's power and abilities. Also Palpatine is a master manipulator, he manipulated Anakin, the ENTIRE Jedi Order and the Republic. I think we can forgive Anakin/Vader for giving Palpatine too much credit and power. As for Padme, remember she was carrying two children extremely strong in the Force. At the time of her death, she may have been the one person with the most connection to the Force in the Universe (being connected in such a manner may have been part of what killed her). Her connection didn't let her become a Force Ghost but it did allow her to be an echo in the Force. An echo that Anakin/Vader can hear and Leia later sees in her vision/memory of her mother. I don't recall if Luke ever had visions of his mother or Anakin as he was but he was able to feel Anakin buried deep inside of Vader...…..Queen outranks Senator (she gave orders to Senator Palpatine and he gave her advice).

When a fan made film delivers a more satisfying, authentic and compelling experience than the LucasFilm produced second film in the final trilogy of the Skywalker Saga, you know there is something wrong. The sad truth is, I am much more interested in seeing the next episode of this fan series than I am in seeing Star Wars Episode IX: When The Ret-Con, Stunt-Casting Strikes Back.

@@xipuxi72 Yeah, you're right, but I was talking about The Last Jedi, not real Star Wars Movies - so the point stands. Like it or not, it is impossible not to recognize that The Last Jedi is based on an objectively flawed, illogical, unoriginal, contradictory and poorly paced screenplay. The resulting film, despite competent acting, well crafted visual effects, equally well done sound and art design, and a good (if somewhat underwhelming) score, remains a complete and utter disappointment. And sadly, no amount of ret-conning, explaining or fan blaming changes that basic equation. If you are willing to stomach the film despite those (and literally dozens more) issues, well... good on you, I guess. Unfortunately, you are also enabling them to deliver another similarly flawed film... and that is something I can't do.

@@xipuxi72 TLJ was a really bad fan film, though you could easily mistake it for a hate film with how Rian treats the original characters. This short episode is also a fan film that was far more satistfying and interesting than the entirety of TLJ and TFA combined. TFA only served to make me feel bored and cheated while TLJ was only there to insult anyone who thought that anything in TFA was supposed to matter and build up into something which is the only reason I went to see it so I give it a fair chance to win me back.

While I see the flaws in this fan film, I still believe it had some pretty good moments overall. Palpatine was the greatest weakness of the movie for me, literally impossible to replace Ian. I feel like Eric was just a tad too overly-critical in his views. I mean, more than usual. The other guys, I feel like, were more objective than him while still not shying away from criticizing the product. Overall, as far as fan movies go - I quite enjoyed this and consider it a valiant effort. Really looking forward to the next episode! Massive respect to the guy making all this, for funding it all himself and for having the balls to even consider it. Respect!

Sidious's goal was always to mature Vader into a Sith lord . Who has cunning, an unbreakable will. Because raw strength can only get you so far until someone of greater intelligence manipulates you. Point and case, Sidious manipulating Anakin to Vader. Vader always suffered from psychological trauma . Darth Malgus is a good example of how he turned emotion to strength instead of being tied down to it. Malgus killed the only love of his life and embraced that anger and turned it into power. Vader struggled with this concept and hence fell back to becoming a Jedi in the end.

I like the review, but it started to get nit picky though, especially Eric. I try to seperate Fan films from big budget films. Critiquing is all well and good, don't get me wrong, BUT I feel like you really have to seperate the two though. We don't pay to watch this for one, and two, this was his passion project with his money. If this was in theaters, and you had to pay to see it, I'd be like, sure bust it wide open, but for fan films, you should tone it down a little bit.

A lot of hard to spot things in the very first scene, the distanced voices of the clone troopers yelling to 'drop him' etc, refer to Vader as Anikin, hard to hear but it's there. Then Vader tries to pay back for his injuries, breaks his legs and left arm to mimic his amputations. Feeling like if he wasn't injured, he would've easily overpower Palpi. Then in the reality scene, they know. Vader knows he can't do it alone, and Palpi knows that Vader wants to but is still obsessed of getting back what he lost first - Padme, that is his priority, not reaching the next level of apprenticeship aka 'lord'. Or he doesn't trust him and will follow him to throw another 'test'. The Emperor is still the 'younger' one, if you see his cast list, they have role for human version Palpatine in the future parts.

I don't like that idea. It makes more sense, based on the Emperor's dialogue, that he wasn't even aware of Vader's dream until afterwards. Also, it humanizes Vader to view the dream as his own struggles with the grief process and dealing with his guilt over Padme's death.

People who think Vader stands no chance against Sidious, just lack knowledge of how powerful Vader really is. If Dooku could compete against Yoda, then Vader could no doubt fight and beat Yoda(not easily by any means) which also means he can fight and beat Sidious.
