Perfect video for me. I watched you break a hose. Mine was looking just as tight so I removed the opposite end like you suggested. Bingo-that saved my hose. And don’t forget to remove those center bolts. I did at first and could have wrecked my valve cover like yours. Then I noticed the center bolts! This is exactly what KZbin is best at.

a few things: 1. undoing the small bolt that attaches the right side harness to the alternator makes it easier to move. 2. BEFORE removing the valve cover gasket blow out any debris on or around the valve cover so it doesnt end up falling into your engine. 3. BEFORE removing the valve cover, if you find oil on the coil pack boots dont remove the spark plugs until you wash the holes with some brake cleaner and blow them out while covering the holes with a rag or paper towels. Then remove the plugs. 4. DO NOT use an aftermarket gasket, they are worthless and you will be having to do the job again very soon. The Toyota gasket isnt much more expensive and it of MUCH BETTER quality. 5. make sure you remove all the old gasket material from the cover and when placing the new gasket make sure its fully seated by tapping it into the cover groove with a rubber mallet or with the butt of the handle. IF you dont do this the gasket could end up getting twisted while torquing it down and that will guarantee you a leak.

My coil pack boots definitely have oil on them when I take them out. I'm not sure what you mean by the part where you "spray brake cleaner and blow them out while covering the holes with a rag or paper towels".

@@BeowulfCav He means that he wants you to clean out the spark plug wells. I personally think that a *little bit of oil going down them into the cylinders and burning in these old cars isn't going to make much difference at all. If there is a LOT of oil in the spark plug wells then you want to get most of it out, if you can, before you have to remove the spark plugs- or before the oil potentially interferes with the spark from the coil boots to the plugs or somth... I use a little hand suction pump to remove some and an old rag with a screwdriver to soak some up. Some people use air pressure to blast that oil out of the spark plug wells.
@brianbumgardner8704
@brianbumgardner8704 3 жыл бұрын
@@daniels6624 More than oil can in that area that is why you clean them first. Also never put RTV in the groove where the gasket fits. That can and will cause leaks. Always use OEM gasket they fit much better.

Great video! Just one more thing for all the viewers looking for specifics: according to the Haynes Repair manual, you should add black RTV Gasket maker (just a small dab and apply it thin in that specific area, do not get this in the engine) to the timing chain cover-to-head joint before installing the cover (the parts where you can see the ridges at either side of the timing chain). As for the torque spec of the bolts holding the cover on, your best bet would be to hand tighten from middle bolts to outer bolts ensuring that the entire cover is flat. Do proceed with caution, the valve cover is made of aluminum and can crack very easily. When hand tightening [after following the middle to outer bolt step], tighten the bolts until you no longer can tighten the bolts without applying too much force, do not attempt to add an additional quarter turn. However, if you have a torque wrench that can apply smaller amounts of force such as in-lbs/lower numbered nm, apply 96in-lbs/11nm to the middle-inner bolts (the two bolts located in the middle of your spark plug wells) (we'll refer to as Bolt B) and 112in-lbs/14nm to the outer retaining bolts (we'll refer to as Bolt A) in a similar fashion. Allow the gasket to do its job and do not add extra gasket maker to the in-set lip where the gasket is placed on the cover. Be sure to change your PCV valve and [if necessary] replace the vacuum hoses connected to the PCV valve and the hose connected to the air intake (they'll most likely be hardened from the heat and may break on you upon removal). The hoses are simple vacuum hoses you can get at your preferred auto part store, just bring the old hoses with you and ask for a 1ft vacuum hose of the same inner diameter, then cut to length when installing. Personally, I can say I spent a good 1&1/2 days working on this because I took extra preventative steps by adding high-heat JB Weld into the gashes on the cover (aluminum absorbs heat like no tomorrow and seems to develop those "melted" looking gashes that you probably have), along with high-heat paint with a resistance of up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. All under the supervision of my grandfather whom is a certified Master Mechanic of 40 years and am working as apprentice to. You don't have to do these steps but it helps for future maintenance. Follow the curing instructions of each product and you should be golden. With best regards and happy DIY'ing!

When you replace the valve cover gasket, it is better to replace also the pcv valve and the brittle hose. One of the reasons why the gasket leaks easily is that the pressure cannot get through a dirty or malfunctioning pcv valve. Use the oem for pcv valve and hose because that is not that expensive. I used fel-pro gasket because they say it was designed to be adaptive to old cover and doesn't need gasket maker. Also, while removing the cover, be careful and think that the old gasket might be already broken and small piece might drop into the engine while moving the cover. I like your video because it shows the truth about what might really happen during the process. I also broke the end of my pcv valve hose(lengthwise) because it is difficult to remove and I inserted the flat srew driver tip to remove it.

Nice job! I'm looking at the wife's '03 Toyota Camry w/oil leak, and she has 86k on it (yes, that mileage is correct!). Same problem, leaks about a half quart ever 100 miles. Had some moron in a garage try to tell us it was a blown head gasket - I KNOW how an engine with a blown gasket looks and performs. This Camry still runs like a scared rabbit and has full power, and the oil is seeping out right at the valve cover seam, not below at the head gasket. Can't believe the valve cover metal erosion in your video; our previous '87 Camry had 177k on it and was still running great (and the engine dry as a bone) when I traded it in. I'm going to do the same with the '03. Toyota - getting cheaper and cheaper in it's quality each year, I've seen.

I just did this and need to get some sleep. Now I'm scared I may have turned the cover over as well; I can't recall if I did or not. My old gasket was so brittle it felt like plastic. I was scared bits of the old gasket would break off into the engine(crank shaft?) since they were stuck to the spark plug well holes. I don't think anything major went wrong, I did use a lot less of the liquid gasket than you on that seam, but if that ends up being a problem I guess I'll just have to take it apart and reapply it but more this time. I also drove it too soon; should have let it sit until I had to drive to work later tonight. This is my first time replacing a valve cover gasket, next time I hope I make a lot less mistakes.

I'm dealing with the same thing.. leaking gasket destroyed my altenator. No big deal got a used altenator for 50 bucks... okay go to put it on snapped the dummy bolt on the tensioner... not good at all. I got the belt off by hand and have the other altenator on now. Ordered a new tensioner and valve cover gasket for 125$ Canadian off rock auto. This used altenator better work hahaha! Moral of the story keep up on you maintenance or a 10 dollar gasket job can end up costing you 200. Wish me luck... cheers

3:37 i used a 22mm (or 7/8") wrench to remove the PCV from the rocker cover with the hose still attached. easy. pinch the hose lightly with some pliers to stop it from twising off since it's likely "frozen" to the PCV output stem.

i did one on my 2002 corolla i owned a few years ago after i noticed there was oil in the spark plug holes when i was servicing . it just snapped in my hands it was so brittle ... but thats the thing with buying second hand cars , there's always going to be something done no matter how big or small ...
