The Index Controllers with Lighthouse Trackers also work with the Reverb and the Reverb G2. You can use two Steam Controller USB-Dongles for that. So, you can have the best of two world. Bring the Reverb G2 to the friend, and at home you use your LH stations with Index Controllers. No problem. The WMR tracking on the Reverb G1 Pro *always* fails when you try to aim one controller in front of the other. Like the vanilla Cosmos at its launch. It's not for playing Onward/Pavlov/Boneworks/HLA Workshop where you need to aim down sight, as of June 2nd.

I ordered the Index cause I prefer Lighthouse tracking. I have a Quest and the tracking is good but no one can deny lighthouse is more accurate. And I love the Knuckles controllers and while I can get it to work, the setups are just annoying in that regard. I also like to think that the Index will get some wireless option (probably limited to 90Hz though) but even if not, it just seems for better quality and for games like Half Life, Elite dangerous, I want the better quality.

Thanks for the comparison! For me a big selling point is always inside-out flexibility, even if the tracking is a bit better with base station. For example i simply go from office to our kitchen with a notebook and i'm ready within a few minutes vs. "Where should i place the base stations now, hmm?". For those who can permanently reserve a room for VR and have the extra money this might be absolutely ok. Hopefully we can get rid off the outside-in hassle in the future without compromises and see also prices further falling for mass adoption.

@RingoFreakingStarr4 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say what is more important for VR; resolution or FOV and the darkhorse of Frame Rate. I've tried out literally every VR HMD and before the Index came out, I was in love with the Vive Pro. I personally do not think FOV is the end all be all at this moment. The Pimax VR HMDs provide a wide FOV but with lots of fisheye problems and the FOV stretches out the available pixels. My job allowed me access to trying out the StarVR HMDs and the newer one that is coming out has hands down the most immersive FOV. But again, the pixels get stretched out so much. Then the Index came out and it honestly hits the best middle ground of all these elements. The image is crisp with a somewhat high refresh rate, it has more FOV but not so much that the pixels get stretched out, and having it be able to hit 144hz, in the games that I can run it in, is a very clear immersion boost. Also it has the best audio solution built in hands down, the best tracking system hands down, and from my experience the best ergonomics. I can wear it for upwards of 8 hours easily (sim racing events). I think right now all HMDs should be chasing high resolution panels in conjunction with Nvidia and software devs trying to make the rendering much less taxing on systems. There is something Nvidia has that essentially cuts the rendering in half by using AI to predict a left/right eye image based on rendering the other one. It is in iRacing and it literally cuts the performance costs down by half and I cannot tell that it is spitting out a "fake" image. I personally find the Valve Index and honestly even the Vives and 1st gen VR HMDs FOV more than acceptable. I want higher resolution panels and 144hz to be the standard before we see improvements in FOV.

Another thing is the HP Reverb G2 recommends an RTX 2080 or better on it's website (which from my point of view is not necessarily a bad thing). I don't know what might have changed from the G1's GTX 1080 recommendation (my GPU), but I will take it seriously until I hear otherwise. At any rate, I will probably wait for the Nvidia 3000 series to come out before I replace my Odyssey+. I am really pleased with HP for working so hard to improve the Reverb, and they are in my opinion one of a few companies doing the most to push VR image quality forwards. I appreciate this so much and I wish I could afford to just slap down $600 bucks, but alas I am on a budget. Also congratulations on the new-and-improved WMR inside-out tracking.

Hi Sebastian , I've had the original Vive for a few years and love it. I recently upgraded to the Valve Index Knuckle controllers a couple months ago. They are amazing, thanks for your review on them , I have now upgraded my HMD. After careful consideration I went for the Cosmos Elite over the Valve Index (OMG lol) , The reasons for this are the Cosmos Elite can go wireless, the ability to mod the lens so no more god rays (I modded the lens in Vive so I can use the same Oculus lens in Cosmos Elite) , Plus I like you can flip up the front of the Cosmos to glance out of VR. The screen is great on the Cosmos and Field of view is great in my book. I'm gaming on my RTX 2080super so res and fps is perfect at 90hz. 144hz on Valve Index needs a hell of a lot of GPU power to hit constant 144fps at high settings. The sound on Cosmos is great and very comfy on the ear. Thank you for all your reviews on VR as you given me a awesome insight into all products that's helped me make up my mind on what to buy. Love your work dude !!! Thanks.

Mixed Reality is a good platform. The biggest issue I had with my Lenovo Explore was the Controllers. So it sounds like with the G2 they have modified Controller to feel more like the Oculus Touch Controllers. That is a big plus..
@Ken_19714 жыл бұрын
@David Cole Obviously they just replaced the trackpad by two buttons on each controller. There might not be a significant change in the tracking capabilities of the inside out tracking so its probably still the same "jittery" tracking. The one really helpful change they made are the two extra cameras ( one on each side of the G2 ). With their help the controllers wont lose tracking when you move your hands to your shoulders ( for example : In the game Onward you grab the knife on your shoulder or grab the radio mirophone ( which is also located on your shoulder ) to communicate with your teammates ). I also play VR games with my first generation Lenovo Explorer and in most of the games i do NOT have any problems. Only first person shooter games like Onward cause the problems when lining up the controllers ( after grabbing the front handle of the rifles) . The cameras of the WMR headsets have problems to identify the controllers and track their exact positions when they are close together in a line in front of the camera. What really helps in FPS games is a gun stock with a fixed distance between the controllers. I use one which is called MagTube from the company ProTube VR www.protubevr.com/en/ It has magnets on the controller cups and you can easily put the controller on and off the gun stock with a little force. Additionaly the gun stock rises the aiming precision in a significant way as you have more control of the virtual weapon. No more jittery or wild/uncontrollable weapon behaviour.

Index being better in most areas, more accurate tracking, higher refresh rate, larger FOV, will bring overall better experience for enthusiasts when pure action and smoothness is concerned. Reverb G2 seems like it will have greatly improved audio and comfort compared to current competitors other than index, and very sharp image, and has cheaper tracking and controllers for budget in mind, on the other hand it will also require a ton of GPU power to run. Will likely be left behind in terms of FOV with future competitors.

Having used the Quest I just can't go back to base stations. No inside out tracking is a real downside to the index in my opinion. I don't care if the tracking is "better" on the index when I had no issues with the tracking on the quest

Can you buy the bay stations and controllers from the index and use them with the hp reverb g2?
@nxy61234 жыл бұрын
Technically yes. BUT you have to calibrate the 2 playspaces because the G2 cannot be tracked through the base stations so it uses its own inside out tracking and you have to sync those 2 spaces to match up for it to work. So it is possible yes.

I've got both Hpreverb and Index. It's always so difficult to switch from HP to Index and it's just impossible if we're talking about simulators. Index's resolution and God rays are so horrible comparing to Reverb!!! If HP has the same hand tracking to play let's say Half-Lifr Alyx, I would sell my Index immediately!
@gingersnaps71864 жыл бұрын

@justflyit75694 жыл бұрын
@@gingersnaps7186 I've got no doubts on this. Since I've got them all, it's absolutely clear to me. There is just a tiny difference in FOV in fact. 120Hz? Well 2080Ti is not allowing you to have even 90 fps in most of simulators, that's why it kicks down fps to 45 applying a reprogection. With 120HZ you'll need to have around 60 of rock solid fps to meet the criteria. By the way, playing Alyx and Bone work with Index in both 90 and 120HZ, I can't really see that much of the difference. I rather be having much more clarity resolution wise, and no God rays.

Such a high resolution without foveated rendering... You'd need a minimum 2070 Super MAYBE an overclocked 5700XT to power that thing. Ideally a 2080ti. Why would they even bother not having foveated rendering?

if the tracking is comparable to rift s then 199% i would get the reverb g2 over the index. not that interested in the index controllers, lighthouse sounds like a bit of a hassle and 144hz... i can barely run decent settings at 90hz as it is. (that being said 144hz with reprojection therefore rendering at half fps which is 72fps may actually look better than 90..? game dependent. would be at least as good as the quest in theory, but feeling like 144hz). anyway, back on topic. and the reverb has the high resolution screens im after, would be brilliant for sim racing and if controller tracking is ok will be at least as good as my current wmr lenovo explorer for shooting games/ non sim racing vr content. so perfect for me. also its cheaper. i would sorely sorely sorely miss my flip up visor though. if i see it on sale i will very likely upgrade actually. as long as controller tracking is improved over my current wmr.

Rift S is designed for most people, with $399 price point and can run well on most popular GPU GTX1060 which is much lower than the minimum GPU requirement of Reverb.

Shan X The reverb works in half resolution mode. There’s no reason you have to have a super computer and it means it’ll be future proofed. That would be a bad decision to get a worse headset, including on comfort and audio, just because your PC isn’t as powerful.
