Except he didn't sing worth a shit on this performance. Out of key, out of rhythm, not following his own vocal melodies. He was a killer showman but didn't sing for shit -- leaving words and phrases out, not singing on beat, not cohesive with his bandmates. He just does his own thing, backing vocals be damned. I still love him, but I have no illusions that he was a good singer. Maybe on the first couple of tours. He was a showman, and that's about where it ended. Imagine Nolan Ryan pitching fastballs during a football game and that's Dave's vocal performance lol.

They rush, don’t understand its place within a song, etc. I had my guitarist friend who rips on guitar fill in on bass. It was fine. When I had my bass player friend fill in that magical something was there. Understand the lack of depth your statement has and heed my words. You might grow as a musician. Brilliant!! David Lee Roth's voice on this is exactly as the album. In later years not sure what happened. With this original lineup and energy Van Halen was right up there with Led Zeppelin, The Who and Pink Floyd in their hey day as far as getting value for your money at a concert. They put on a great show and that sounded great too. Not all bands could do that. As with everything time gets everyone and things change. Its great to see this posted and for us that did not get to see Van Halen in their prime it is a great portal to that time!!! Thanks from Canada!!!

There was the mother of all plastic beer bottle fights before VH came on, the sky turned black with thousands of brown 2 litre plastic beer bottles being thrown. @Phil Swift I was being sarcastic if that didn’t come through. I’m with you brother! I’ve been a guitar player gigging for almost 50 years and I couldn’t agree with you more. However, I do have respect for Mick Mars. I think if he would’ve been in a band that was more concerned about kicking out kick ass music rather than wearing make up and looking like a bunch of pansies jumping around stage in drag he would have got a lot more respect. In my opinion he’s a pretty decent guitar player.

What a weekend - could well have been my last... I was 18 and me and my mate drove down from Huddersfield in his Cortina. For me it was mainly about seeing Eddie - but the whole thing was such an experience. Managed to somehow lose my mate in the crowd - then bumped into another mate from Huddersfield and was with him for a while. Wasn’t too bothered about DC so went to find first mate and leave, rather than going home with second mate who had also driven down (no mobiles to sort anything out). Couldn’t find first mate, so was suddenly alone with no means of getting home. Walked around the streets outside and bumped into a pissed-up fella with a dickie bow on who was walking back to his house from some posh do. Got talking and he ended up offering me to stay at his house overnight. So I stayed in this complete stranger’s house overnight in a spare room. I still think back to that night and wonder how lucky I was not to have ended up minus a kidney in the morning, or worse, buried in concrete under his cellar…

Great story! I missed meeting up with mates at Monsters of Rock in San Francisco because I was in another mate's wedding that day and was late getting to the show. The meet up location in the stadium got mixed up or wasn't clear and like your situation- NO cell phones then. 😆 So how did you end up getting back home?

@@freegee3503 Found my way to the local bus station the following morning and got a coach back to Huddersfield somehow. One of those strange teenage days when you're finding your way in life - you just automatically seem to be able to do what you need to do when the situation arises... 🙂. Looking back 40 years, I wonder how I survived my earlier life by just living with no real planning or direction. Things could have worked out very different when I think about it. Hopefully, despite not finding your mates, you at least got to see the bands at MOR San Francisco - what was the lineup?

I have been to a lot of concerts. This one was off the charts with the sound. My tastes are widespread. Some of my favorites to watch live were Bon Jovi, Garth Brooks, Cheap Trick, Dokken, Neil Diamond, Billy Idol, Toby Keith, Kenny Loggins, Johnny Mathis, Slaughter, Randy Travis (before his medical issues) Warrant (with Jani Lane), Lee Ann Womack, among many others.

This was one of the last real Van Halen concerts. The reunion is a good thing but without Michael Anthony it’s a different kind of truth. The brothers are mega-douchebags for the treatment of Mikey. I have nothing against Wolfman but come on... , Maybe Wolfie should get a band together with Janik Gers ?? & John Mayer. That would solve 3 classic bands problems. Hell-get Paul Bostoph on drums so Lombardo can go back to SLAYER & finish the final tour.

As far as metal and rock music goes, everything in the 80s is just legendary. You can love and enjoy every genre from pop rock to death metal, but when you listen to music like this it’s like listening to classical music. It’s art, it’s beautiful.
