Just gonna add my 2 cents....well its free right?? I remember when this album came out. All of us who first start to really get into music knows what I'm talking about. Its a real special time in a persons life. Not so sure about todays kids, but back then it was different than today. I was too young to go see them in concert (was 11 when this came out) I remember all the high school kids with concert t-shirts the next day when they came to Houston. Man I was jealous. hahaha. Was a very special time for sure. This song and Pamama ruled Mtv and the radio for a long time. Just a phenomenal album. Your vids are always great so no need to really comment on that. Just wanted to share a bit of me for an album that really holds a great piece of my past. Cheers bro.

Thanks bro! When this album came out, I had only been playing guitar for about 2 months (I had also just turned 12), but man was I excited to get it, but more because it was simply Van Halen. 5 months later, I show up for my weekly guitar lesson, and the teacher says "how about we skip the lesson, and go to the Van Halen concert tonight?" My parents were friends with him and had planned the whole thing. My first concert... VH at the Forum in L.A..... the reigning kings of rock playing in their hometown. What an experience. :)

WOW what a simple gesture to have such a lasting impact. I cant imagine how cool that was. Good for you bro. At 13 my first concert was with DLR and the skyscraper tour. It was in Shreveport LA in a coliseum somewhere (don't recall..too many beers ago). This particular venue was first come first seat, so me and my cousin were on the floor about 4-5 rows from the stage (standing room only no seats) Was so cool to see Vai and the triple neck heart guitar. Wasn't just for props in the video. That experience will always be my best memory of a concert. Good times :D

that pinch harmonic on 6th fret i have searching for years how to do it properly to sound close as possible tried millions of diferent attempts...but to sound as perfectly as it is on the record its a tough serious work. on the record it sounds strong like any normal harmonic...maybe this video will help me with that wide vibrato thing...thanks a lot for finally bring this solo up.
@PDXguitarfreak6 жыл бұрын
Me too! I've seen people play and tab it differently and never really get the feel down right. Hopefully my version did it some justice, but I'll leave that to the listeners to decide :)
@Deadblind_Decoy6 жыл бұрын
PDX Guitar Freak Sure it did man. Your version shed some good perspective on what its probably going on in that spot its really hard to understand it on the physical part on where we should hit the notes for the harmonics come out very defined like on the record. what i used to search was hitting the 6th fret bend it while stroking the harmonic trying to get as close as possible. AMAZING JOB, THE SOUND OF VAN HALEN LIVE MAN...you should try to emulate it...i hope the helix can get you close. it sounds good on the video.

I would like to know what this would be played at in Eb? Ed starts the solo on the 20th fret in every live video on KZbin. Since I am playing it live myself, and love Eb tuning anyways, I would like to play this song the same way Ed did. If you watch this (hope you do), you will see he starts the solo on the 20th fret (slow it down to .25 speed, and zoom in on his hands...his index finger is on the 20th fret (between the two dots...21st and 19th...he only had 22 frets on all his guitars...so in standard tuning, where he is playing at, would not sound even close to the album (studio) cut. If you watch him live, he plays the chorus (lead breaks I think the are called...still learning here, hehe)....but if I am going to play this live....I would like to play the live version...but if you watch his hands, he hangs out around the 12th fret on the lead breaks and solo. Looks like he uses the 11th fret a lot in both the breaks and the solo...but in the second run of the break, it looks to me that he goes to the 6th string...the camera shots are terrible...be nice to have him in frame and in focus. But I think your ears are better than mine, and you can figure out what notes he is playing and what string he is using for that note. I am surprised that no one else has lessons on the "live" version of this song. See all kinds of other songs that the artist plays live. Ed definitely does play this in Eb. Can't get that note/pitch on the 20th fret in standard. Here is the live version of Jump: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eaGvgoB8irJ5kKs

Are you playing a Jackson Dinky JS32 in this video ????
@PDXguitarfreak5 жыл бұрын
No, the JS32 is probably one of the least expensive Jackson guitars ($300 USD). This is a Custom Shop Jackson Soloist - quite the opposite :)

after all that has been said and done....I think this is the only solo that nobody can quite play properly. Either the feel or timing is wrong, or the bending of the same note on the 6th fret just doesn't quite sound right. I've always overlooked this solo, but it should be held in high regard against his best...full of feel and musicality as usual.
@fullmetalsal5 жыл бұрын
why teach in standard tuning when the actual song is half step down?
@PDXguitarfreak5 жыл бұрын
Usually Van Halen is tuned 1/2 step down. However, as far as I can tell, any time that Van Halen does a keyboard dominant song, he's in standard tuning (at least all of the songs I have learned).
