youre not just breeding these, but domesticating them, you are multiple generations in breeding for specific traits to make them more favorable as pets

You have to admit. How cool is it to have baby monitors just want to be all over you. They are the sweetest looking little guys. Lucky you. I know you have invested yourself, but it looks like it is so awesome.

I enjoy that you actually take the time to interact with your monitors so that by the time someone buys them they’re already use to human interaction, most breeders I’ve met never put that much effort in interacting with their reptiles

You make the most informative reptile videos anywhere. Most people make videos to show how cool your collection is where you make videos to show how cool the animals are. I use you and your projects as benchmarks in the industry. You are #1 across the board... so keep doing what you are doing so I can keep striving to reach a small % of what you do...

Im guessing its a lot harder to get niles to display this type of instinct, im housing a baby nile that i love and care for with great responsibility. He has warmed up to me noticeably but hes still easily spooked by my brother and grandmother as well as my sister. I guess its all about social interaction.

josiah torres I raised an ornate Nile from 21” in 1996 till 2012. His adult size of 6’ and about 40-45lbs was attained roughly roughly by around 2002 and but he did gain a little “girth” from around 2001 till maybe 2004, but he was very consistent and a very hardy animal. Don’t ever expect a Nile monitor to act like these guys unless it was a fluke of genetics or such. I always felt like my boy was a fluke, but then again he and I spent an extraordinary amount of time together in conditions we both favored, free roaming, but it was in my detached garage, which was big, and every movement of equipment or placement of shelves, tools, anything, honestly, was done with him in mind and being very careful to not give him places to get stuck and/or hide where I could t get him out. I gave him a large dog plastic dog kennel with a piece of plywood between the top and bottom halves, with the bottom filled with sand and the second story(plywood) had a bathmat which got rotated out to be cleaned. In the winter time I put a heat pad under the sand or under the bath Matt, depending on where he chose to rest. Anyway, he was awesome. But there was no way he would just climb around on you like these guys did as babies. He was mean as hell, but as he grew he got more confident. He was best when he was fully grown but also more dangerous because of sheer power. For example, if anyone ever questions the strength of a monitor lizard, when I needed to trim his nails, I would straddle his back and put his fingers between mine and very carefully trim each one. If I got the quick, session over. It’s a pretty amazing sight to have your lizards hand in your hand and his palm was about half the size of mine and his fingers would each fit between mine, so his feet were big. And I’m a big guy, FYI XL gloves barely fit me. And if he did not want me to trios his nails, I could apply all of my 220 lbs and he could lift me up!! Session over! Always t hey are simply permitting your presence. They don’t particularly “like you”, in our interpretation of the word. That said, he did react differently when I was away. If I didn’t go into the garage for maybe a couple of days, he would trash the place. He would clear my coffee table off with CDs and books all over the place, and it totally looked the same as when an adolescent pitched a fit and threw things around. It was quite interesting. He would often come close to me to be in my close proximity, but not because he loved me. To this day I’m not sure if it was to be around if food was presented or just loneliness, or what. But he was awesome. I almost feel like a water monitor would be too much of a “pushover” and be a little boring compared to my monster. I’ll tell you though that the time commitment is incredible. It was extremely difficult NOT to replace him when he died, but my sense of responsibility told me to wait till my kids were big enough to be around a monster and not stick their finger in it’s mouth. Stick with it, they are awesome, but not a breeze, and never tamed. EVERY SINGLE time I see these guys put this hands and fingers in certain positions near the mouths of these guys it makes me shudder. Yes, I could very well pet my Nile, even scratch his chin, scratch his head, but I was very careful to NEVER allow my fingers to be in a position where he could nip at the tips or even mistake a finger for something else, even though they have arguably better eyesight than we do. That dragon could notice the slightest twitch of movement form across the yard. I could be washing dishes in the kitchen while he was in the back of the back yard and he would look up and take notice when I walked up to the sink. And this is through a normal sized window and about 100’ away! I would never suggest a Nile Monitor as a pet for anyone except for the most committed nutcases. Not easy, and the rewards are entirely in the mind of the keeper, but I miss him everyday, hence the watching of these videos. There be dragons afoot!

I see this and it changes my tune to allowing my 14 year old to move onto monitors. He started his love of reps when he was 7, and hasn’t lost the interest for even one day. So he’s proven there but I can’t help but wonder if the monitors are too advanced for a snake owner. He’s been asking now for a year. I asked in another video which monitor would be good to start with. Certainly an young one. Ahhh where to begin.

James Randall no, that wouldn't be possible. It's too much of a risk to ship them over seas, especially with how valuable his monitors are. The lowest price for one is about $780 and that's because their socialized and properly cared for. And don't complain about the price, because people who do shouldn't even own one, that also shows that they aren't willing to put in the work because I promise you, people who buy one and properly care for a Water Monitor spend over $1,000 alone is just the construction of an enclosure

Obviously they don’t know their actual empirical measurement, but they definitely know when they are a more comparable size to their surrounding life forms. My Ornate Nile Monitor became significantly more confident as he grew up. By the time he was 6’ and about 40 lbs I think the only thing he actually feared was me when did bad things, and even then I would either pop him on the base of his tail or if he was being nippy I would slap his mouth firmly. Of course I am fully non violent but immediate response was an excellent teacher and he definitely respected me more. Often he would actually come lay at my feet after I got mad at him. I learned a huge amount about animal and human behavior from this dragon. But never put the tips of your fingers near the mouth of a monitor. The potential ends don’t justify the means. Would you put your fingers close to a running chainsaw blade? That is not an exaggerated comparison. I loved him and held him almost every day and could kiss him on the cheek, but never in certain positions or angles where he could take your cheek off or a finger. Think I’m exaggerating? Ever seen a giant monitor tear apart a small animal? I think these guys take unnecessary risks dangling their fingers in front of the faces of these big boys. What’s it all worth? We know they rule, and can appear somewhat tame, and while I’m sure these guys are confident that they won’t get bitten, the message it sends out would inevitably give people false confidence in the temperament of their lizard, and the results could be permanent digital damage. Please be careful.

How do you feel about a beginner reptile owner buying one of these?
@SatansOps
@SatansOps 8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Galeancu Not a good idea. Monitors, especially the big ones can be very problematic if you don't know what you are doing. If you absolutely want to start of with a monitor then I'd recommend a Varanus Acanthurus, aka a Ridge tailed monitor. But do make sure that you are prepared for what its requirements before you get one. And if you do decide to get a water monitor; Seek the help of experts on a frequent interval to make sure that you are not screwing up. Because these animals live for a Long time (around 10 years) and if you fail with socializing with them when they are young, they can turn out a bit more aggressive then you'd want them too.

I was doing research by watching your videos but after visiting your website to price one I just change my mind all together. Your prices are outrages just so you know. $750-$5000 for a baby. Your nuts!!!! That’s just makes me sick to my stomach. I can buy one for 200 and treat him or her with just as much love. And it would end up just as healthy and happy because I take all my pets to the vet. Have fun price gouging everyone.

He's a professional breeder of exotic reptiles, what do you expect? These creatures aren't bearded dragons! And by his videos, you can see that he invests a tremendous amount of time and energy into each and every baby! Petco and that random guy on Craigslist probably aren't going to seriously delicate themselves to make sure these creatures are the best they can be for you.
