One thing I like about asking the cast members about "Jerome vs. Jeremiah" is that because it's the same actor, they don't have to throw one of them under the bus.

Exactly. Jerome was more Joker-like, but seeing Jeremiah's transformation and relationship with Bruce form over time made him compelling in another way.

What I love about Cameron Monaghan's portrayal is that he's not just ONE version of Joker, he's all of them. At various points you can see him portray Romero, Hamill, Ledger, Nicholson, and stuff from the comics. Someday I hope they'll officially give him the role on the big screen. Also, I know it's a take people don't like, but I enjoyed his portrayal of Jeremiah just as much as Jerome. Jeremiah is the version of Joker from the comics who's very cold and calculating, the madness boiling just under the surface. It was a really interesting direction while keeping true to the character.

Paul Dano's Riddler was what disappointed me the most about this year's movie. The "real" Riddler would never fully cover his face, and DEFINITELY would never try to come across as physically intimidating. Even worse, I've always taken it for granted that Edward Nygma ENJOYED being the Riddler. Frank Gorshin, who I met shortly before he died, once said that the character was naturally confident and optimistic, and became a criminal simply for the fun of challenging others. But the Riddler I saw in this year's movie was bitter and miserable, and seemed to be taking perverse satisfaction rather than truly having fun.

I wish he had more Gotham and they didnt rush the ending, Gotham really had some of the best Batman content hidden behind some goofy sides. Not only villains, I feel like David Mazouz did such a good job as a young Bruce Wayne, he always seemed like the very awkward but most intelligent boy in the room which I believe is exactly what a young Bruce would be.

I feel the complete opposite. They did rush the last season but I'm happy they ended the show at 5 seasons. I like when shows know they've produced a satisfying product and choose to end it on their own terms rather than bloating it into an over saturated slog.

Gotham was not canon and yet somehow faithful to canon at the same time. It told the origin story of so many villains in such a good way. I saw them as human beings who could want and hurt and care. And yet also wired to be villains and basically evil. I treasure the show .

I think that despite being an origin story, Gotham is kind of its own thing. You could see the show at its own universe and its own take on the many characters of Batman's world. I agree tho, it's amazing (and incredibly dumb at the same time).

David and Cameron were perfect - I only wish we got more Jerome and Bruce interaction instead of Jeremiah because I feel there was just more to them. First of all - they had history. Jerome tried to kill Bruce twice and then it feels like a greater set-up when Bruce... Punches his face off (ah context). With their later interactions just being more interesting to me. Like you can tell Bruce sometimes feels genuinely sorry for him, while also being absolutely disgusted and overall "wtf is wrong with you". And Jerome slowly developing obsessive tendencies towards him and shifting from seeing him as his victim, to even questioning if he wants him dead. It's just great relationship development and reminds me of Arkham Origins. I think, in a way, Jerome was the first one to really see Batman in him when he decided not to kill him. He also expresses Bruce was the only person to "help" him which intrigued him in the first place. Jerome presence also literally haunts him after his death - in the same episode where Bruce was hunting his parents' killer which felt super important for some reason? And secondly - they had a lot of interesting parallels that I'm pretty sure were not purposeful but still happened. I don't remember how many of them I caught at the time of watching but what mainly interested me is this; they both lost their parents to become what they are - the interesting difference being, Bruce lost his loving family to a criminal while Jerome killed his parents himself for all the abuse he went through. They both had been freaky outcasts. The weirdest and smallest thing I've caught was - they both had a weird little diary where they were doodling their own vision of the future. Like, huh. *tldr* Jerome and Bruce felt more like two sides of the same coin to me - incredibly similar while also being very obvious opposites which was ultimately way more interesting to me.

Penguin's storyline is exactly what I want from movies/shows about villains. We got a character who is every bit as fun and full of depth as any good protagonist. With his own trials and tribulations. His own work and personal life. His own goals and wants. But also just happens to be an evil piece of shit. Why? Because we like the character. Simple as that. We don't need to to constantly center their story around the morality of their actions. We just need them to be as they've always been, just now we're walking in their shoes.

I don't know why you didn’t mention the best dynamic that this show produced, which was the Penguin and Riddler. The Riddler was seriously my favorite villain, and it’s hard to choose as this is one of those shows that you put on when you have literally run out of all Batman media content and are expecting very little from it. Then, it not only became interesting but roped me in so hard that I legit never thought I would be a God-Damn Riddler fan. The stupid but awesome way these two would bounce off each other was amazing. I can’t say enough about this Riddler and how this guy manages to pull off the whole green suit and not only rock it but kill it! I love how the Penguin represented raw emotion in its fullest range and the Riddler its level of Machiavellian intelligence and cold logic. Watching these two funny idiots, and yes, they were funny in a good way, constantly interact with one another and cement what a villain's BFF scenario would look like was amazing to me. In all the Batman EVERYTHING I have consumed, I always found those two villains kind of boring and lame. Even in BTAS, I would be like, oh man, ugh, a Penguin episode, or in anything, be like, oh, Riddler is in this, ugh. But with this show, that's literally all I wanted to watch, and if episodes would skip either of these two, I would be like, oh, come on! I love those guys, and I couldn’t believe how a show that was barely on my list of DC-related content I wanted to watch quickly sucked me in and is now one of my top favorites. I don't care what anyone says; now I finally have a Penguin and Riddler version I like, and to me, it’s the ones from this show. Also, last thing… This show isn’t just some goofy, cartoonish, let-me-be-on-my-phone-while-it’s-playing-in-the-background series; this show was actually smart in ways I think went over a lot of people’s heads, even those who liked it. It shows a city’s evolution little by little into madness to the point that you can’t even compare the fictional city from season 1 to the last season. It would be like living in a city for your whole life, moving away for 5 years, and coming back to visit, asking yourself, what in the fuck happened to this city? They did it with this slow burn that was intense, and one can truly say, “Man, that city went to hell.” It is the personification of that saying, “I wish we were back in the good old days,” and by “good,” meaning that we took just mobsters and crooked cops for granted as being bad because this is sheer utter madness now. The evolution and devolution of every character are executed little by little beautifully that while you are in it, you don’t even realize how far off the rails this place has gone, especially to its MAIN character - Gotham City itself as an entity. Ah, you thought I was going to say Bruce Wayne - nah, and I never ever thought I would utter these words like ever - he was actually the weakest part of this show. And yeah he was a kid/teenager, but they could have done a better job with our beloved main hero even at that age. Like anytime it was just a Bruce Wayne after-school special-centric episode, I knew it was going to be one where I could possibly pick up my phone and halfway pay attention since I won’t be missing much. BUT thankfully, we got the most badass Alfred that carried his segments. In the end, I couldn’t be upset about it because I would then remember, yeah, this is called Gotham - it’s about Gotham, not Batman. No seriously, with all the characters practically coming to life, Bruce Wayne was the one not going to do that; that version remained two-dimensional, and so much so that it was cringe when he would start evolving into Batman with his “fight scenes” that I would be like, please God, don’t do this, this is awkward. Let’s see the Riddler mess with Penguin again and outsmart him creatively in any way possible. This show and its characters are the ones that created our Batman as we know it, and I’m sticking with that. Like people always whining about how Batman created his villains, nah, because if we take every characteristic we love about Batman and Bruce Wayne, they truly are each represented in every character. For example, you love Batman’s intelligence, go see Riddler in action, Raw rage Batman, the kind that is like beat them now and ask questions later, go see Penguin, etc. Even Jim Gordon - you want the stoic and more slick conflicted Bruce Wayne, yeah, go take a look at his character. Truly, each characteristic of Batman separately is in his future villains and friends. I could write an essay on this aspect and convince all of you since it’s truly there, like putting pieces of a puzzle together or a woven tapestry of surrealism; THEY created Batman and Bruce Wayne without even knowing it! Gotham gave birth to Batman and Bruce Wayne! In the end, your environment is what molds you. In this case, imagine none of these characters existed, and Gotham was some basic average city that, yeah, like any city, has its standard crime and monsters with corrupted cops and city officials, we would have been stuck with this lanky, bland, boring version of no Batman, but just this guy, but as an adult - some boring rich guy known as Bruce Wayne. This is one of those rare shows you just stumble upon and didn’t know much about it, but then afterward think, man, I am glad I found a tiny gem like this. It goes to show you that the shows and movies we lay heavy expectations on and are eager to watch just end up not being as satisfying as they should have been. Whereas this one is everything you actually wanted but never realized it even existed.

@@fireflow726 What's ironic about the casting is that Milano is clearly not the counterpart to Poison Ivy, but to Harley Quinn. More than that - she IS Harley Quinn! She was even born in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn, which is also Harley's birthplace according to the recent animated series. What more proof does anyone need? That's why, in my imagination, a teenage/twentysomething Alyssa Milano was Harley Quinn in BATMAN: UNCHAINED (the fifth Burton/Schumacher film that was right on the cusp of going into production but never got made). In fact, a part of me hopes that film STILL gets made, this time with a 50-year-old Harley opposing Michael Keaton's 70-year-old Batman.

I dont think Jeremiah is a BAD performance, i think that its like you said - a different comics Joker, the silent, sane and calm Joker. I really like both performances but like most people i believe the Joker should be like Jerome but saying that Jeremiah isnt the Joker is wrong since he is a take on it that was present before the show. I think its still a GREAT performance just wasnt the one you wanted. Its like taking a very bad storyline from the comics and doing it PERFECTLY, you wont like it but its still a good performance.

I would just like to say that when it comes to Echo? It is possible her loyalty was a result of Jeremiah's manipulation before he even became the Joker or was sprayed with the insanity gas. The reason I say this is simply because of the fact that Jerome exposed Jeremiah as just as insane or evil as Jerome, with the only difference between them being Jeremiah's manipulative tendencies and nature to scheme. Jeremiah himself confessed that he lied about Jerome's attempts to take his life back when they were younger, lies he likely schemed and made as an attempt to "dispose" of Jerome. Now looking at both the brothers and their different methods of destruction, the manipulation and brainwashing of Echo fits Jeremiah Valeska's personality. Jerome said it himself "you're as crazy as I am." The only difference between them both is their goals, with Jerome being an anarchist and a cult leader who wanted to prove that everybody was just as crazy as him, while Jeremiah was a schemer who was obsessed with Bruce Wayne and their connection as well as destroying Gotham.
