I'm not sure if I agree. It is a little harsh to judge someone's character based on a live debate. Most vegans, me included, grew up non-vegan. If confronted by those arguments it is - as we know - basically impossible to produce any valid argument against veganism. He didn't know that yet. So basically what you expect from him is to immediately, on the spot admit to a stranger that the way he lived his life - how he was taught to think since childhood - is deeply immoral. I am not at all surprised that he responded the way he did. However I'd caution you to conclude from this reaction in this unique stress situation about his personality. I don't think he walked away from this conversation thinking "man I did great. I am so proud of my arguments". Maybe this uneasy feeling of cognitive dissonance will cause him to think more about how he should have responded to Ed. And maybe this is the start of the process that you probably went through already? This stuff takes time - always. It is one thing to point out when someone is behaving immorally - I am all for that - but it feels somewhat cocky to pretend you could judge how someone's mind works based on how they try to come up with an argument that they still think exists. This was a great one Ed, you did a great job pointing out the contradictions, also props to the interviewee (Vlad) for remaining respectful. It's an interesting position Vlad's taken... a nation of the most heart disease and obesity riddled - diagnosed at young ages of 20's, 30's, and 40's now, Alzheimer's, erectile dysfunction, lower fertility rates epidemic, increased diseases overall, higher all cause mortality, and terrible health in general - all correlated with meat consumption/oils, is more fit to defend its land? What a fascinating outlook. I realize Ed doesn't want to get into the health aspects as it's a much more difficult and broader issue to debate, (and veganism is about morals) but from a health perspective, all of Vlad's points are moot and fiction. If I was living in fear and worried about who's invading who and in that invasion mindset, I would much rather have unclogged brains, unclogged arteries, big veiny veins, and extremely fit professionals defending "our land" than the short life expectancy clogged brigade, unable to think clearly, and *sustainably live past 45 without visiting the ER yearly, and loaded up on dependent medications. I was a US Army soldier for several years and not a single ounce of animal flesh entered my body. I got several awards for being one of the most fit, most responsible, and most improved soldier my first one being in boot camp where I was recognized as the best soldier of they training class. Anyone that tells me that you need to be a meat eater to do the things that I did while in the military is just wrong because I did it without meat and many people I met while I was in also were vegan or at the very least vegetarian.

I had a brief stint of activism (anonymous for the voiceless) and found it to be incredibly draining as I was constantly met with the same outdated reasons for meat consumption.
