@sskpsp

@@ZoeyZoco that would be fair if he had said that, but his "inconvenience" was having to change his mind about morality. Also, meat is actually a luxury for most of the world. You may be thinking of food deserts where only processed food is available . In third world countries, people still eat mostly grains, vegetables, beans, etc. which are nutritious and cheap staples. Veganism doesn't necessarily mean fake meat. It is definitely possible to avoid meat while making ends meet.

It saddens me that in this day and age people still cling to the "third world countries" excuse, when so many people in third world countries are on plant based diets because they can't afford anything else. Meat-eaters in the west have convinced themselves that surely people in third world countries can't be vegan, and that somehow justifies gorging on burgers. And wtf is this about rural areas with no viable vegan options - what, rural areas don't have beans now? As someone from a poor family and living in a rural area, I find this fucking insulting that this is used as an excuse. This all hinges on the premise that you're eating OUT or buying pre-made meals, and I have never, ever been able to afford either. I'm sick of all these mythical poor people in rural areas that have the money to pay someone else to prepare their food, because they seem to only exist in discussions where meat-eaters that can afford whatever the fuck they want, but keep using these myths to justify abusing animals for their own pleasure.

He's so articulate, rational, and intelligent, yet he was employing his entire capacity to defend his contradictions / cognitive dissonance to the point of irrationality. It takes time and a lot of 'intellectual humility' but I think people like him (and myself) can reach a point of re-examination, and ultimately evolution. But when you buy meat you are buying the meat with the intention for them to get killed and be your food, that is a fact. So you are supporting people killing animals with your purchase by increasing the demand for it.
@Charlie-dp5wr
@Charlie-dp5wr 2 жыл бұрын
Another point here that is often missed is that eating from plants does not necessarily always kill the plants. For example, fruits are the reproductive body of a plant that bears seeds. An animal taking the fruit does not kill the plant, but is actually desired by the plant (especially in nature) as defecation will position these seeds elsewhere for a new plants to grow. This is a huge consideration when trying to "draw the line" of sentience.

However that argument can be used against veganism as well. Animals need other animals to eat them to create a balanced ecosystem. So by that logic we could also be eating some animals (aka just do hunting, no animal farming, only some elite few humans would eat those animals and under very strict guidelines), and it wouldn't be morally wrong bc we are contributing to a balanced ecosystem. Sounds kinda ridiculous right. So many problems ride up with this way of thinking. So, it's not about what the plants have evolved to be and how they are supposed to be spread and stuff. It's simply about the conscience and individual experience that animals have. That's the important thing.
@Charlie-dp5wr
@Charlie-dp5wr 2 жыл бұрын
@@triptripp1873 I don't see how this is the same argument. An animal doesn't "need" the be eaten, it needs to survive, which last I checked is what this thing called "life" is all about. By that logic - do you, as an animal, need to be eaten too? I guess you would want to be eaten right, you know, for the sake of a balanced ecosystem.

@@triptripp1873 and who decides who are the humans worthy of eating animal products?? who decides what humans are ''elite''?? does race play a part in this? money? if its money then, as its become obvious in our age, ''elite'' people, wealthy people dont care about balance, moderation or any of those things, its usually because of that, that they become ''elite''... this doesnt seem like a good argument at all, not only because of that, but because ecosystems tend to balance themselves, without any human intervention, so there wouldnt be any reason to interfere with natural proceses. also... neutering exists, if we are so concerned about certain animals growing their population too much, we could neuter them.

I don't think that sounds silly at all. But I think a better way to frame what you said is that, when given the choice between preparing a vegetable and eating it versus slitting the throat of an animal and cooking it, most would prefer the former. It's just that the modern food industry hides the horrors of the process from consumers, allowing them to conveniently gloss over the morality of it. To your point, if the horrors of these industries weren't abstracted away from everyone, maybe a lot more people would forgo animal products.

Earthling Ed is just too smart for these people. He is imposing his morality on others if he judges that others are mistreating people and therefore he steps in. Love how Ed forces people to questions their beliefs and why they believe them. Brilliant.

Shit...it wasn't good. It was very frustrating. This guys arguments are complete bollocks. So many rhetoric falacies. At least he can recognise Ed has good arguments. Hopefully a seed was planted. But before that seed can sprout there is a lot of deconstruction that needa to happen. He needs to understand why the arguments he uses as justification are just not sound arguments. The premises do not lead to the conclusions. It is very frustrating to see someone who is vetarian justify themselves like this. The moral arguments in favour of vegetarianism are exactly the same as the ones in favour of veganism, simple as that.

@@Semabachos completely agree, vegetarians are just health conscious people or are through religious reasons, they should just be vegan if they won't eat meat but issue is, they likely don't even consider the animals. It's like a vegan that occasionally eats meat, like.. they are no better , they clearly don't care for animals but are vegan for health reasons. If a person can not understand or not care that an animal suffers before becoming food, then they are either uneducated and disconnected or just plain and simply, selfish hypocritical a holes because I bet they would swerve to avoid hitting a duck and it's babies crossing a road, I bet they would stop and become traffic marshals.

I loved this debate. Not only was the guy respectful, but he also made a very nuanced point that i consistently run into with other people that I hadn’t seen on this channel yet. While I normally enter into a long winded argument against relativism when it’s brought up, I think this simple example will be much easier for people to understand. Thank you 🙏

Ed is great! 👍👌👏 As an ex-vegetarian I don’t agree with him. He has made that inconvenient choices many times in the past with meat and adding dairy/egg is initially hard but possible. I did it! 😅 I loved dairy but now I can stand the smell of it and eggs! 😬

The best way to determine “your” morality is by doing to others what you’d want them to do to you, assuming you’re of sane mind and not desiring self-harm. Therefore, if you wouldn’t want someone to kill and eat you or your byproducts for their “convenience,” then don’t kill and eat others for yours.

when he goes on about how it's inconvenient to change (change our beliefs, bc he says how when he sees milk, he doesn't see suffering, i.e he has to actively think when making a decision=too hard=he's just gonna do whatever is easier), obviously any change is new, sometimes scary, unknown, and takes practice. Now it's just a matter of "do i want to change and help reduce suffering" or "i'm going to actively ignore the suffering of animals bc it's too hard to change". We really do like comfort

@@richierich2229 hi Richie. Thanks for your comment. Though I disagree with your statement that vegans are self centered. I agree that there are some places where eating meat is necessary for them. But that is not the argument. It’s the fact that billions of animals are unnecessarily killed. We can get all the nutrients we need from a plant-based diet, and that is proven. Completely eradicating the consumption of meat is most likely impossible, but educating people on making conscious decisions about what the products they purchase is a step in the right direction. These are arguments Ed has made plenty of times on his channel, I do recommend watching more of his videos if you’re up for it. But watch with an open mind and a willingness to learn, not with preconceived notions you may have about vegans. 💚

I grew up on a farm and ranch. I've been a mere couple of feet from pigs, a cow and a baby goat getting slaughtered. Even though I was young I could see that these creatures knew something sinister was going to happen. They immediately try to break free from the person wielding the long sharp knife and they cry out for help by squealing. We are not meant to consume animals. In the past we were nomadic peoples. So bringing cows and goats for their milk for added sustenance on our long voyages made sense at the time. We live in the age of Aquarius, where all the information is readily available to 90% of the world population. Sacrifice you own wants and needs not another loving creature life in order to satisfy your palate for convenience.

Hmmm, this fella thinks it's possible to stay alive without eating! I read somewhere about a tribe in which the men claim that they never have to defecate! I suspect that if we followed them around for a while, we would eventually see them sneaking into the bushes. I admire Ed's patience with his interlocuters. He has so much experience debating this subject, that he has literally heard every argument that has ever been made against veganism, and he has had plenty of time to come up with the answers. His nonthreatening approach is also very disarming. His persistence is amazing.

Oh I love this. Veggie: Plants have feelings, please don't eat them. Ed: we have to survive and they feel the least possible amount of pain (some sort of nervous system in some plants but no brain - while all animals that are eaten have both and more developed), so this is the most ethical option. Veggie: Lol just don't eat. Tf why don't you then also abstain from eating?

I’ve been waiting for this video since I discovered you weeks ago. I’ve been vegetarian since I was 12, and was vegan for 7 years until I started traveling to rural Texas for work every day. I went back to vegetarianism because it was so difficult to even find something vegetarian to eat and a big part of my job was taking clients to lunch or dinner where I’d be made fun of for living in Austin and being a vegetarian. That was a long time ago. I work solely in Austin now and there is no excuse to not be vegan again. I waited to see an episode like this with anticipation and a bit of dread, because I knew you’d get me. Thank you Ed, you converted one more wayward vegetarian back into veganism today. ❤

@@x-latetv-x6816 I do believe that in most cases, sensible, productive-goaled arguing is a sign that a person actually cares about a topic. And caring about the intentional harming of innocent, sentient individuals is ALWAYS a good thing in my view. So, no shame at all in vegans arguing about veganism.
