Something that's become really apparent lately, is that most family friendly films and shows are actually far more mature than most 'adult' films/shows. Family cartoons usually have clever writing and some sort of message to teach. 'Adult' cartoons are usually just full of forced unfunny drug and sex jokes which would only entertain a teenager at best

That's been a thing for years. Family Guy lampshaded the fact with its intro starting back in the late 90s. It's grown worse, so to your credit, it has become even more apparent with every generation. So now it's just obnoxiously obvious how puerile anything "adult" or "mature" really is.

Such a good show. Animation is awesome, humor/writing is some of the best of any show, all the while having tons of respect for the internet culture that allowed the show to be made in the first place. My favorite thing about it was how they actually USED the medium of animation to make a unique world/characters. While shows like Velma are basically sitcoms with very little reason to be animated other than to have the excuse that it’s “adult animation.”

@@MrM0gus Family Guy's humor is at an historical worst for me, it's either nonsensical cut-aways, actual pointless slapstick or Peter explaining the punchline in advance before a set-up for said punchline can even be delivered, because of course the writers just assumed the audience was too stupid to get the joke in the first place or something. Sometimes you do get something vaguely funny like "Brian, being a writer is the only thing that gives your alcoholism any credibility", most of the time you get Peter going "Lois, I'm going through my Daniel Craig phase" or some stuff and then you get a 10 seconds cutaway of him acting like 007.

8:38 "That's her arc! She's gonna become a better person over the course of the show!" Yeah, those people said the same thing about Kitt from Willow, and look how that turned out. Despite being a thoroughly spiteful and envious character for the entirety of the season, they ended it by simply declaring "she's the best EVAR" via a magical cuirass that only actives for those who are pure of heart...which of course activates only for her. Zero internal character development or change. Just external validation. Ditto for She-Hulk, where everyone assumed they were making Jennifer such an arrogant b-tch to Bruce because her arc would be learning how difficult of a life he's had to lead, and how her mundane irritations pale by comparison to what it means to be a hulk. Nope. No lessons were ever learned, and everything just worked out for her in the end with zero sacrifice or effort involved. The people behind these characters are such selfish narcissists that they simply don't possess the lived framework to be able to write a likable protagonist. They are ironically everything that they project onto their white male stereotypes: privileged, sheltered children who've never had to struggle for anything in their lives, had everything handed to them, and have no idea what the world is like outside of their rich, metropolitan, coastal ivory towers.

Also, the burden of getting audiences invested in flawed characters is ALWAYS on the writer. I remember that one episode fom The Fairly Oddparents where the comic-book villain Nega Chin gets so fed up with losing to the hero that he goes into the real world, finds the in-universe creator of the comic and beats the crap out of him. THAT is how you do self-awareness right, not by subjecting the audience to straight-faced abysmal writing and then claiming it was done ironically. That's literally the same excuse Tommy Wiseau had when he claimed The Room was intentionally made terrible, even though anyone with half a brain could tell the guy was a complete nincompoop that took 30 takes to do the "I did not hit her" scene right -- which he himself wrote. You can't make crap like this by accident, much less pretend that you were deliberately aiming to provoke people as part of some elaborate shitpost, especially when the audience makes it clear that they're not even deriving ironic entertainment from it. In direct violation of Hanlon's razor, shows like Velma and She Hulk were made out of genuine malice rather than mere incompetence.

To be fair, "Norville" was always Shaggy's name (Shaggy being his nickname), and that's how much leeway I'm giving this show. Every other complaint about it is 100% true. And while I also believe that the writers are not self aware enough to write this cartoon as a parody of "woke" shows I have no doubt executives are counting on people hate watching it. And, sadly, going by the rating numbers, they seem to be right. I hope everyone stops watching when new episodes come out. Worst thing about it is, I could see some of these things actually working in a Scooby-Doo Adult Series, but not like the way they implemented them here. Examples like this. Drug Abuse being like, say a plot where the reason one of the bad guys dresses as a monster and chases people is because he's high and out of his mind. Or the sexuality, like maybe something like a "Let's unmask the villain" scene where they end up pulling off his whole costume to reveal a naked person underneath, then they make jokes about his privates there. Or the blood and gore, well I guess maybe something like a bad guy who's actually willing to take a life or two. Or a scene where instead of being apprehended by the authorities, the bad guy in the monster costume decides to commit suicide. Something like that, but sadly this show seems to miss that mark.

@Possum Reviews I would like to request a review on the backrooms which is a fictional creepypasta contains threads of unsettling images using internet aesthetics depicting busy images as unnatural empty, The Backrooms are an endless maze of office rooms which are entered by "[noclipping] out of reality in the wrong areas". As its popularity grew, internet users have expanded upon the original concept by creating different levels and entities which inhabit the Backrooms. Fanmade video games, collaborative fiction wikis and KZbin videos have also been inspired by the Backrooms. Another thing I would note that I've also come across with videos of guys wearing yellow suits running through mazes, slides aswell with other places such as the poolrooms. What I really hate is that all these tropes of adult cartoons can actually be done well, just probably not by a big studio. There needs to be some substance and thought put into "adult jokes". They use the fact they have now made seveeal 4th wall breaking connections to use the show as a medium of both mocking thenselves and other production companies. However with that show you're taking a cast of villains which are already horrible and ridiculous people and so the shit they get up to tends to fit. With this they had to change so much about the premise and the characters that there is nothing really going on here in how it relates to "scooby doo" as a show or as these characters. The Harley Quinn writers obviously love the DC universe and pull some very deep cuts for characters and concepts while doing its own the thing with those characters. Velma from the two episodes I’ve watched thinks they are on a joke and understand it, but they do not. It comes off as “Look how stupid this thing is after I take away its most defining traits”. The most painful thing about this for me is I really like the art style of Velma

There are two types of adult entertainment. The first type is only 'adult' because it is unsuitable for children. It is immature and mistakes sex and violence for maturity. The other type is the one thats ACTUALLY mature. The type that tackles serious topics, makes you think about things and teaches whoever watches it something new. Neither of these are really bad of course, you can do the former well enough that its entertaining. Whats interesting is that I have seen shows that use gratuitous sex and violence without it ever feeling to much or cringy. I think it might have to do with the way you do it. Velma is basically a show made entirely out of spite and hatred, it is entirely made to stick it to the people that its creator thinks are bad. Theres no love here, no actual creativity or passion. The nudity is done entirely for cheap laughs and to poke fun, not because theres any real passion or interest there. Even the most ridicules Ecchi Anime that leans entirely into the T&A has SOME reason for doing it, even if its just the love of beautiful women. Its the same with the violence. Its not really there to tell a story, its not there to look cool or evoke something meaningful, its meant to shock and be edgy with no understanding of how to do anything interesting with it. The thing is, even if we assume that Velma will have an arc to being a better person (we all know she wont, shes a self insert Mary Sue), you still need to have SOMETHING there to keep people invested. If the entire show is hot garbage, there is no reason to stick around. Then theres the fact that an unpleasant character can still be likeable if written well, which makes the arc both more believable and more satisfying by the end. If all you want to do is feed the protagonist into a wood chipper feet first, there is no reason to stick around on the off chance they will grow over the series.

The show has no reason to be Scooby-Doo themed. It could've been an "original" show.
