Venus Wars was one of the first anime feature films I watched after Akira. I remember spending years looking for the soundtrack before the internet came to fruition, only to find out it was out of print until around 2000. While the movie has it's flaws, it captures anime during one of the best periods of anime. They certainly don't make movies like this anymore. A true classic.

I was surprised to learn the soundtrack was done by Joe Hisaishi, the same guy that does the ost for My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo, and Howls Moving Castle.

Venus Wars is hardly an "obscure anime". It was a mainstay anime movie in the 90s on US cable TV. You're obviously a newer anime fan.

Just watched this and the animation is OUTSTANDING and characters were fun. Less good is the story, which is kind of ho-hum, and there's a lot of visuals early on that feel weirdly derivative of shots in Akira. OST is great, character designs are great, and the action is well done with intricate explosions and cool desert punk vehicles. Very much a hidden gem.

Damn Sentai, going right for my heart and it's not even Valentine's Day yet. I'll definitely be getting this. I still have the worn out VHS tape when I recorded Venus Wars back when anime aired on Sci Fi Channel, and Burning Circuit is one of my 80s anime jams. I noticed that in the old dub, after the two cops crashed their vehicle into the other one, Hiro chastised them for colluding with the enemy. Here he mentioned that it was a one way street (which could be taken metaphorically that siding with the enemy is a one way street). That's rather interesting. I'm curious as to what the original Japanese version said.
@NomadFlow3 жыл бұрын
The Sentai dub here says what the original Japanese dialog said although there was less cursing in the Japanese dialog. Surprisingly the old MangaUK dub of this same scene also has less cursing even though MangaUK were notorious for filling their dubs with unnecessary cursing and vulgarity and bad british actors trying desperately to do american accents.

@PJade Жыл бұрын
I think it was just time for a new dub. The old dub was pretty cheesy and dated by today's standards. There are several industry voice actors and acting coaches who will tell you acting styles will change after 10, 20, or this case 30 years. They changed the script for Sentai's version somewhat too.

Denica Fairman was definitely the standout performance in Venus Wars, and it's too bad she dropped out of voice acting because she really knew how to emote (Abby in The Sniper 2 was her best role by far, and it was also her last role before leaving the industry for live TV acting). That said, the old dub was perfectly serviceable for its time.
@NomadFlow3 жыл бұрын
@@Flegan777 "That said, the old dub was perfectly serviceable for its time." No, it wasn't. No dub by MangaUK was. MangaUK was terrible. Streamline Pictures did fantastic dubs that not only still hold up but are better than lots of modern dubs. Even the companies that redubbed anime Streamline already dubbed were inferior to the original Streamline dubs like ADV/Sentai's redub of Megazone 23 which is awful. Yet, Streamline got attacked for no reason with many fools spreading lies about them yet MangaUK got away clean despite them making many of the worst dubs of that era. They had bad british "actors" doing laughable american accents, had scripts filled with british colloquialism but still had everyone speak with american accents and filled the dialog up with no much unnecessary vulgarity and cursing it was ridiculous. MangaUK was by far the worst dub company ever when you take into consideration how many animes they've ruined. Even a dub like the first Ghost in the Shell movie from 1995 which MangaUK didn't directly make but they did influence as they paid for it ruined that dub with also unnecessary cursing and dialog changes that didn't need to be changed like Kusanagi making it clear in the original Japanese dialog that she is Japanese and so are Batou and Togusa but the MangaUK produced Animaze dub took that reference out. Screw MangaUK. Everything they made should be redubbed including the 1995 Ghost in the Shell movie which should be redubbed with the cast and crew of SAC!

I can't agree with that. The older dub of Akira was very, very hard for me to listen to and it sounded very laughable and lifeless to me. The newer dub of Akira sounded much more natural and believable to me. Both English dubs are pretty poor. The 80's one is so cheesy you it can't be enjoyed unless you grew up with it. The newer dub is more lifeless but the translation makes more sense which helps the story.
@Turnajon3 жыл бұрын
@@MicahBuzanANIMATION Sorry, but I know what lifeless sounds like, and to me, the Akira 2001 dub, whatever its faults, lifelessness is not one of them. I found it to be far more livelier and competently executed. If anything, the 80s dub is the one that's lifeless. Nobody involved in that dub sounds like they know what they're doing. The 2001 dub cast, on the other hand, does. To me the acting is so much better in the newer version, full of zest and yes, life. So "lifeless" does not apply to the 2001 dub to my ears.
