You might want to rethink the muffler. Firstly, it's on it's side. It has a drain hole in the bottom to allow any moisture in the exhaust to escape. That's not going to work with the muffler on it's side. Secondly, the muffler is inside the box, which means exhaust fumes can escape into the box through the vent. Personally, given that the exhaust is a convoluted hose, I suspect that the drain in the muffler doesn't remove a lot of moisture. That being the case, the simplest solution might be simply to crimp the vent closed. Ideally, it needs mounting on the outside of the box, the correct way up, though.

Yees but it is not that critical. The hole is really small. I do like the idea to crimp it closed or weld it shut. We will not get much use out of this heater anyhow. I like to keep the muffler inside because such installations are not 100% legal in Germany. For example is it not allowed to carry Diesel in a not-certified container and i drilled holes into the container. Christan

@@Vera_and_Christian It's a very neat installation and it'd be a shame to have to modify it. I suppose, if you wanted to be really OCD about it you could fit the muffler the correct way up (inside the box) and then run a small diameter metal hose from the drain and out of the bottom of the storage box. Thinking about it, I suspect the most useful thing about the vent might be to drain any unburned diesel out of the exhaust. That might be something worth monitoring.

Just had a memorial for our German brother today, he had a long and fruitful life. He came from the era of the Nazi time frame, learned a lot from him what it was like to be a "neutral" child German during that time. He loved German vehicles, the food and culture; meaning German attention to detail and pride in tooling/manufacturing. He loved America, but his German roots were always there and always had German vehicles. As a German descendant, family has been traced to the 1450s, I hope to visit again outside my Army days. I appreciate both of your "German" personality and sense of humor. Hi Christian & vera, can i suggest that you move the heater outlet the lowest point in the tent & place it where your feet are, that will reduce the noise & set the heater at 3 when you need to warm the tent up & before going to sleep, set it 1 or 2, that way the heater will keep the tent at a more comfortable temperature while you sleep. I have an eberspatch heater in my truck, thats kept me toasty for many years. Regards Graham

I want add to that You may find useful google therm "coaxial exhaust" where you have tube-inside-larger tube, inner takes air from tent into heater, outer contour - pushes air in tent/to the car.

I would run the control box cable and the 12V supply inside the vent hose, and run the hose through the bottom of the tent with a small riser to bring it above mattress/pillow height and diffuse the heat both sides. Or if it's too hot another connection through the floor is also easy. Saves running through the zipper window.

The temp would be ok for a rubber cable. They allow 90 degrees. Have to think about this. Really clever idea for sure. Christian

That’s a great installation! A couple of tips: - the muffler is usually meant to be mounted vertically as it has a drain hole at the bottom where condensed water runs out (you might not have much condensation inside the muffler since it will stay hot), however, it will leak a small amount of exhaust gas inside your box - I highly recommend that you have a CO alarm inside the tent - just to be safe - Personally I installed a flange and duct on the intake side of the heater and ducted that fresh air away from the heater. Just for extra piece of mind that no exhaust gas is being sucked in - If the standard pump ends up being too noisy for you, then there are quieter ones available on ebay - Finally, I found that a single walled heater duct is quite inefficient compared to a dual wall duct from say a dryer vent. On setting H1, I’m able to keep a 20 foot camper comfortable

I love your videos and I don’t even have a Landrover or a Toyota but drive a German car. Vera is my hero, love the banter. Very well engineered. If you find the heat is too hot to have it switched on overnight and you find the heater noisy, could you install it under the car and have a detachable long hose to fit when you camp. Yes you would lose some heat along the pipe but it may give a noiseless comfortable heat and it would be easier to fit a take off from the vehicles diesel tank. I know this is not an idea you want o hear after all your hard work but it’s just a thought. Cheers John from County Durham England

Hi Christian, you may want to check how you mounted the exhaust. I was shown that there is a small hole opposite the mounting screw hole that is designed to let the condensation drip out. As you mounted the exhaust on its side, the condensation will build up and rust out the quality Chinese stainless steel. Love the channel

For a quick disconnect fitting try motor racing suppliers (dry break fuel lines required in a lot of race series now) or your local hydraulic pipe company such as Pirtek if you have them in Germany

Another great video. When Vera mentioned bringing heat into the D3 cabin through a side window, I thought of another channel I am subscribed to. The channel is named "Headway Drive". This person even made, umongst other things, his own rooftop tent and easily removable but secure side window ventilation for when he was still sleeping in his Nissan X-trail T31: - brilliant Japanese engineering 😀. On the heat outlet hose, adapt a new shop vac floor nozzle (large) and the heat will be diverted down at the floor. Or 3D print something similar. Just my $.02. Impressive build Christian!

Great job! I've never seen anyone install this Chinese heater so meticulously)). The idea of separating the living quarters and the technical compartment is very clever. We have a manufacturer in Russia who makes roof tents with a built-in heater, which is installed on the roof as standard. It's not very comfortable to sleep in it with the heater running overhead and the pump clicking in your ear all night. Thank you for another guide and the cool idea of splitting the remote through the connector!

I saw one guy who put the whole heating system in a box which he kept on the floor beside the car. This seemed a good idea as all the fumes and noise was kept away from the sleeping area all that was required was a longer piece of ducting .

Nice job…I thought about doing this with my roof tent although I think our roof tent days are over! We did 2 weeks in Scandinavia in the roof tent and found it hard work with me and my wife and 2 boys in it but the body heat kept the temp up! Lol

I have the 5kW Version of this thing running in my Workshop since 2018 now after 20 months 24/7 runtime the Motor and Burner are on its end of lifecycle. So far i am impressed from this things, and by the way if you have floaded the Chamber with Diesel it dosnt matter that far 😁

Wonderful content as usual from Christian & Vera, great construction.. I am worried about fumes from the exhaust, could you make a telescopic exhaust pipe to extent higher than the tent to stop the fumes entering the tent on wind locations and you need a CO2 & NO2 gas monitor inside the tent just in case. Has Christian ever though of providing a design and build service to small businesses that need custom design work carried out.. Amazing set up on tools and knowledge.. I can't wait for the next video..bravo.

Great idea with the heater for your roof tent , the tent will be nice and warm for getting dressed in the morning, when you don't want to get out your sleeping bag normally ... Great show. Just thinking for safety you might include a CO2 & NO2 gas detectors inside the tent for 2 reasons 1) cracked heat exchanger 2) wind change of direction entering the clean air intake, but NO2 detectors are not cheap. Thought as an electrician you might go down the electric blow fan heater looking at the volume of heat required, uplift in temp and automatic thermostat, not sure what wattage you would need or how your battery would fair. 🤔

Excellent as always. I was going to mention the silencer vent and CO alarm but see these have already been discussed. Did wonder whether the hot air inlet could come via a floor mounted fitting so you're working with something rigid. I have a 5KW version of this unit on my boat and so far it's been flawless. Vera, if you want to bring heat into the vehicle from through a pipe have a look at the Discovery window vents from Nakataneng which you could adapt easily. Best wishes Becca and Chris.

And then share it with others so they have a chance of owning and having fun with their Discovery, without emptying their bank account. You could add an automatic fire extinguisher to the box. You can get them with an electrical switch that could be used to shut off the power. These are usually in leasure marine installations.

Using a couple of silicone o-rings either side of the muffler mount bolt would isolate the heat and any noise from transferring into the box and then the car 👍
