The first of (hopefully) many in a series discussing all of the things we mean when we say "You just got Tarkoved!" Some of these things we need to accept as part of the game, some things we should argue should be changed for a better hardcore and immersive experience, and others we should fight to have fixed, optimized, or redesigned.

I think you're hitting on the main issue I have with Tarkov. This game hits me so viscerally that it stays with me even when I'm not playing it. While I can appreciate the accomplishment of a bunch of devs to make a game that is capable of effecting my physiology, I find it exceedingly stressful. It actually ends up limiting how much I can play the game.

I used to be in the same boat as you. I was so obsessed with EFT and wanted to get good at it so badly that i couldn't think about anything else. I literally had dreams that were just me playing EFT. Surviving a raid, hell, even just killing another player felt like a shot of heroin. But at the same time, every failure was absolutely crushing. I would often call it a day as soon as i survived a single raid because i would rather just stop playing than deal with the frustration of dying. Eventually i stopped playing solo because i simply couldn't maintain a positive attitude if i wasn't with friends. But even then the stress proved to outweigh the highs for me and i gradually stopped playing altogether. Now i just play the single player mod from time to time and im much happier. Lets me enjoy the same gameplay loop but with way less stress. Of course it isn't nearly as much of a rush as live EFT, but personally i would rather my games be a little boring as opposed to so intense that i hear footsteps in my dreams, haha.

@@yellowsaurus4895 Tarkov is always fun with friends because you can set personal goals and play for the sake of playing. It's when you obsess with missions or grinding for gear that the game becomes unejoyable. I'll usually only load in with a 50K kit. Something like an SKS, PACA and Steel Pot. I don't care if I lose it as long as I die taking a few players or bots with me. Learning to treat the game casually was what it took for me to begin enjoying it for all it offers.
@yellowsaurus4895
@yellowsaurus4895 3 жыл бұрын
@Dylan Wight well yes, but all games are more fun with friends so that's really not saying much. And im gonna have to disgaree with your second point: for me, completing quests and grinding for better gear is 100% the only thing that's enjoyable in Tarkov. I'm obviously in the minority with this opinion, but i really don't like the gunfights in EFT. For all the praise it gets, Tarkov has got to be one of the clunkiest and worst-feeling games I've ever played. There are a myriad of fps games that are way more fun and less time consuming if i just want to shoot people in the face. The thing that drew me and im sure many other players to EFT is the uniqueness of its gameplay loop, not the gameplay itself.

@@dylanwight5764 and i mean, as much fun as it would be to play more casually, I don't have that luxury. I'm lucky if i manage survive more than 3 minutes into a raid; I can't afford to bring in 50k worth of gear just hoping to get a couple kills. And now thanks to the way they changed the flea market and found in raid status on items, it's even harder for someone like me to make money than it was before.

I just started to play Tarkov, and it’s the most intense Game I’ve ever played. I am level 7 now, and upgraded to the Edge of Darkness edition. I love this game! Last week I played a woods night raid, i was sneaking around and tried to figure out where I am, and where I have to go. I heard the sound of someone turning around, and hitting the bushes. My heart rate was over 9000! I spotted him, saw him turning slowly to find me, because he heard me too. I one tapped him with a straight shot in to his ear. I waited a few minutes, and sneaked over to loot his body, got a full modded Svds with a thermal scope on it, and other nice stuff. Most satisfying moment since playing FPS games! (Started with CS 1.4) ✌🏻

As a fan of horror games, I think I know exactly what Nikita means. The feeling of having lived through a precarious and stressfull situation, but having overcome that challenge. Its kind of joyous, buit also makes you feel really alife. I guess that kind of fear for your life is usually something we dont get anymore in our modern lifes, but games can unlock some of that. But of course, that means you have to overcome it. One of my clearest experience with games in that regard would be finishing Amnesia, pretty much one of the most terrfying things ive ever played; or when I was younger, watching the grudge and the ring. Overcoming movies, even most horror games isnt hard though; its just continuing onwards. Tarkov has a much higher barrier, because succeeding means often hundreds of hours of improvement, but one that is satisfying in much more ways, and much procedural and open. Its, besides Starcraft 2 multiplayer, the only game that really truly stressed me out. But I also keep playing it for the feelings of success and progress it can provide, the crazy tense situations and how even in defeat I can sometimes find some successes. I wonder how that feeling will change, should I actually reach a thousand hours in the game (atm im like 300h, prolly pretty bad for that much time). Eg someone like Pestily, who played it for an unbelievably long time, seems to still gain a metric ton of joy out of Tarkov.

I thoroughly enjoy watching the people play the game, and the idea. But as much as I want to believe it doesn't need to be fun, it kind of does by nature. A wise man once said, "if it's not fun, why bother" and it's true, if the game is not fun to play, why bother. But other people do enjoy it so they do have fun. But if a person specifically has no fun when playing it, why bother? Because it's not fun. Either way, great video man!

I would say, that Battle State isn't trying to make something that garuntees fun, but rather, a chance at fulfillment. A chance to beat the odds, and a chance to win through skill, hard work, time, and sacrifice. I would say, quite simply, that they aren't trying to make a game. They are making art.

Games are art, and all those things you just mentioned are basic game design. Tarkov is fun, despite what these guys think. Its just frustrating as well. And the struggle to get those great raids is part of the challenge, and increases how rewarding it can be when things go well.

It is art. But the real art of gaming is creating the situations and circumstances where even a beginning player can have some minor success, encouraging them to keep trying. It is at the moment Tarkov's biggest issue, the hurdle to jump to be reasonably successful using whatever measurement suits you is perhaps a little too high. Just like any other gaming network, Tarkov need enough new player grist for the regular player mill. Historically, when a game fails either to attract or worse to maintain interest, it fails. Please consider the all mighty Fornite, you only have to scan for "is fortnite dead" to realize that it's salad days are way past already. Tarkov in remaining a beta product for years is running the risk of burning out the potential player pool before making a product that is appealing enough to enough people to keep it rolling.
@fri8601

@@OldManBadly Yeah, I agree with the new player thing. its hard to get a new person to start playing when death is around every corner. I think they need to add a low loot value map that you can only access between level 0-10. just to ease new players in.

Yeah as others have said, games and art are one in the same the only difference being that gaming is a form of interactive art, what you've stated isn't a particularly good argument. but if you're not enjoying Tarkov because you don't feel like you can learn due to the complexity, size and ruthlessness of the combat, solo tarkov is a option and after some solo practice with actual progression so you can learn some missions and weapons properly and eventually you'll be gagging for some proper PvP back on the official servers because you'll actually have a bit of confidence with maps, have a basic understanding of what weapons you get on with rather than just being the free and easy kill for veteran Tarkov plays who have been playing for several years. BSG should genuinely be taking notes, incorporating solo tarkov into the game would open it up to so many more people and ultimately get more people into PvP
@OldManBadly
@OldManBadly 3 жыл бұрын
@@psyanide1603 I agree. I have played some in the offline mode, but I realize it's a bit like shooting fish in a barrel. Without the inherent risks, there is little return. I am a fish in Factory normally, but offline mode I take out a dozen SCAVs without too many issues. So there is a bit of back and forth. Letting new players enjoy a solo situation for the first couple of levels probably wouldn't hurt!

Like those moments when you've had a rough few raids, you've lost a lot of your best gear, and you go into a raid with a pistol and a prayer and end up getting the drop on someone much better geared, or find some nice gear and get out with it. Being in intense fights that lats for what seem like an eternity and having to adapt on the spot to try to not only prevail, but just survive. It's a swath of emotions that paint a much larger picture.

The very reason you listed for good games existing is why, as an example, the first Medal of Honor games was made in a leap of faith. I still remember playing MoH Rising Sun as a 6 year old; let me tell you, that was not easy, but I still remember that feeling of defending and watching as Pearl Harbor, and USS Arizona, is destroyed before my eyes, with the music to match. I sure do love the experience of falling through the floor at Mach 9. On a completely unrelated note, great video with compelling narration and fantastic editing. Games need not always be 'fun', but then again, 'fun' is subjective. What others may view as 'fun', some may view as boring, or even torturous. Like P90X, some people have a blast feeling like they're about to die, and others just feel like they're about to die, without the, "having a blast" part. 'Fun' changes over time as well, what was fun when you were nine is most likely not 'fun' when you're twenty, or maybe it is for you, but not for others. There is no, and will never be, an exact way to word 'fun' for each person alive, but for each person, they'll, "Know it when they see it".

This video Takov'd me. I expected it to be fun. I know this is a great video. Tarkov at times might not be fun, but it is very immersive. It definitely accomplishes what a game does. It pulls us from the real world for a bit and transports. Tarkov isn't like Call of Duty. It's not an Overwatch or Fortnight. It's not that type of shooter. It's more like Flight Simulator. It's more like a gun and mercenary combat simulator than the typical FPS. This is a good video to really highlight those points. As frustrated as players might get with Tarkov, there's also the same feeling of accomplishment when escaping with a ton of loot.

This is exactly the type of videos the tarkov community needs to see every once in awhile. So well executed, and certainly changed the way I look at it now too.

Almost broke my monitor today out of frustration. Never really lose my composure, but Tarkov really got to me today. Spawn snipes, constant disconnects, late spawns, losing mil after mil. And what does youtube reccomend....this. lol EDIT after watching: Its honestly what I needed. A refresh on the perspective. Thanks man.

I remember once in shoreline. Got into the powerplant when I heard someone outside. Not knowing if it was a pmc or npc, I stayed there for the remaining 19 minutes lol. Tried scaring them off, looking through the windows, but never left. The fear and pride I felt wouldn't let me. Losing it all to the game going MIA was a far better option than giving my shitty gear and pathetic loot. At that time, I remember the fear and despair. It felt real.

I loved this one. The mixture of intelligence and actuality is definitely on point. I too feel like Tarkov gives me this "life" that I would otherwise never experience and it is an amazing feeling and also frustrating as it would be in real life. I love tha game fun or not, its been a grind both mentally and emotionally but its worth the ride. If you fail to think in this game cause you're too scared, you already lost. Its like writing a book, you have to be the one to control the scenarios and not be the a side character in your own story.

This is a very well-executed in-depth explanation of what I feel more and more as my gaming experience progresses. Awesome job Veritas! This should be a must-see for anyone who is drawn in EFT or any other very difficult and hard game in general, and cannot point to why he gets "addicted". This should be a must-see for anyone who ever thought that EFT (or other hardcore games) should "change" in order to be more accesible. Addiction mentioned above is a very strong term though, dopamine is definitely strong, but comes from the activity. Therefore we should not consider the addiction to certain games, but to the feeling (the drug, Dopamine). All humans are likely more or less addicted to Dopamine. The difference is where each person gets the dose. Activity that fails to deliver at least a certain level of dopamine release is far less likely to draw you. Recently, many many AAA titles have been built to provide "fun", mostly in forms of instant gratification. Unfortunately, the developers seem to misunderstand the term "fun" at times. The majority of instant gratification mechanics do not provide any sense of fulfillment or mental stimulation. And that in turn inevitably leads to boredom (absence of Dopamine). It is why I get scared every time there is a major movement on EFT Reddit which is aiming towards instant gratification, people, unfortunately, do not recognize what is making EFT "fun". A prime example of this effect should be World of Warcraft, today infested with instant gratification but with next to zero emotional connection with your acitivities.

Dude, first off this was a great video. It will be awesome to see this series unfold and to hear your perspectives, so thank you for making it and for the cool app. I have played EFT since it started in beta in 2017 and it has been one hell of an interesting time seeing all the changes (for better or worse) this game has gone through in all facets and how the community has reacted and changed as it has become way more popular. Immense frustration followed by occasional bouts of elation pretty much sums up my experience with Tarkov but it has so far been one of the few games I stick with year after year.

800 hours under my belt in Tarkov, and i still remember the first time i won an against-all-odds solo fight against a squad. I remember every aspect of it, from the armor i was wearing, to the ammo i was running, to the loot i got out of raid. All of it, and i remember it like it was yesterday. It was such an incredibly exciting experience unlike anything I've ever experienced in a video game, and the part of my brain that stored that memory wasn't triggered by "fun," it was triggered by fear and dread, and the ultimate triumph over it.

I would hate to have to read all the comments in your future video for net code. In my experience this is almost always a very touchy subject for a huge number of people (though this is mostly my experience when involved in discussions around franchises like battlefield and CoD). All in all a great video though and I look forward to seeing what else you come out with
