@nizhoni33393 жыл бұрын
@yassi jass its still misogyny... like comparing it to something i experience, homophobia. if i went through a phase of talking shit about gay people generally, i still spread homophobia out in the world. just because "everyone else did it" i still am responsible for my own actions and the fact that i said and did things like that. even if she didn't mean it or whatever, doesn't mean i can't criticize it. she still did it. if we couldn't criticize something because "oh well everyone else does it" then progress couldn't ever be made tbh.

while i agree with the main message of your comment, there are “actual” religious people that are conservative, homophobic, etc. i think it’s dangerous to hint at a ‘no true scotsman’ type argument bc it kinda lets people brush off the bigotry within their religious community like “anyone that believes x is not a real y. real ys are never z-phobic!!” instead of examining what led to those beliefs within their community.
@reemia3 жыл бұрын
@@silverbluetooth yeah i agree! i do personally think that my religion is deeply flawed and there should be more intra-community discussions about that. i also acknowledge there are people who are genuinely religious and use their religion as an excuse to be bigoted. however, my main point was that i don't like people criticising and generalising every religion when they obviously don't know much about them, or immediately assuming every religious person is a homophobic bigot when literally there are atheist homophobes y'know what i mean

I know no one will see this but I just want to say this. I’m Catholic. I’m a lesbian. I’m very liberal. All my family are supportive and are also very liberal. And yet there is part of me that does take it personally when someone makes points about why my religion is bad (even if I only believe in what I think to be morally right, like being charitable etc). I think it’s just a very personal subject. I’m beginning to learn to not take it personally, but it does still hurt a bit, especially since I’ve been called an idiot for being religious. I don’t condone people getting mad BUT I do get why they get so hot-headed. Also I think I should add. When Ireland had the same sex marriage referendum our priest literally said we should vote for it. Catholicism (at least apart from America from what I can tell) is now pretty forward thinking. The pope donated money to trans sex workers during the pandemic because they were out of a job

Yeah, I understand you 😔 my family is very religious, but i'm literally afraid of saying it, because so many people now hate christians
@SouperPie.3 жыл бұрын
i completely get what you mean! i'm not religious myself, but if it makes you feel any better, (most of the time) when people complain about religion, it's about those who are dicks, not at all the religion itself i'm bad at wording things but hopefully that made sense aaa
@yomanyohan68283 жыл бұрын
You’re definitely not an idiot for being religious. People making generalizations about other people is annoying, that’s probably why you feel angry! There are plenty of wonderful religious people, and they shouldn’t be lumped in with horrible religious people. I think you’re right not to take it personally though. I try not to take remarks about “groups I belong to” personally either. There’s so many people who just can’t think deeper than labels. I see it everywhere now with EVERY SINGLE topic. It’s so unbelievably tiring.
@alyssarae75013 жыл бұрын
people who don’t like christianity (or any religion for that matter) understand it’s a personal subject for people who follow that religion and you should think about how it’s probably a very personal subject for them too. when people comment on not liking christianity it can be because of what the bible teaches, they could have possibly been mistreated or abused by christians who use their god to condone their actions, etc. and like 95% of people understand there are good christians out there. also people have the right to be mad and upset about christianity, just like you have the right to be upset if someone wrongly insults you for you following christianity.

To the 14-year-old who is struggling with their father's acceptance of them: my heart goes out to you. You are far too young and innocent to bear the pressures of your father's career and your family's livelihood. Honey, that is just not your responsibility, and anyone who makes you feel like it is is just dead wrong. I can't imagine the fear and sadness you must feel. But if you can at all, please try your best to assert yourself and your feelings to your father. The choices regarding his career are on him and not you. As his child, it is his responsibility to what is right by you. Unfortunately, your only weapon in this scenario is to ask that of him. Whatever choice he makes, just know that you are a wonderful soul with so much to offer. Others opinions are a reflection of themselves, never a reflection of you. I hope the very best for you, and if you read this comment, I hope that in some way it has offered you comfort. ❤️

I'm also a pastor's kid and gay. My parents said a similar thing, that they don't want me coming out because it would hurt my dad's job prospects (he was looking to pastor a new church at the time). This really hurt, knowing my mental well being isn't as important to them as his own image to a group of strangers. To me I think I came out before I should have and this kid was outed so they weren't prepared either. This whole thing was hard for my parents until we just all stopped talking about it and now they completely ignore it and act like they forgot. This kinda hurts but I think it's better than going through something like conversion therapy or being kicked out of the home. It might not be what anyone wants to hear but maybe trying to move past it without upsetting them further would be good. Physical safety is so important. When you're financially stable and able to live on your own it will be so freeing, but you'll probably have to wait until then. I explained to my parent's that I was still religious and didn't see being gay as a sin because honestly if you look into it it's not. Which I could explain all day but I'd recommend doing research and writing down what you find and giving it to your parents. They probably still won't accept it but maybe also don't push them too hard in case it has the opposite effect. If you don't keep bringing it up they might stop as well and this honestly, as sad as it sounds, could really be the best option for now.

I know they may not see this probably but I really wanna say that I support the person in the advise segment. We hear you and maybe not completely but understand a part of how you are feeling. My advise on what you can tell him is that this way you are hiding a part of yourself, which probably also affect your mental health so much, may sound like a choice you can do but it certainly isn't, just like your sexuality, and it can't go forever. Him getting a job in another church that is more accepting seems like the best way. I know it's easier said than done and I'm not saying that you should do something a teenager on the Internet says who isn't qualified in anything says but I'd say try to convince him to some alternative options to change his current job because no one's job should be controlling that much for someone and their family that they have to worry about who they are, getting that therapy to change a part of their identity and move to an another country so making him realize how messed up that is may be the way to go. I'm really not informed about if he change his church what happens like will he get less money, will his reputation get damaged or is that even a option so I apologize. But the biggest thing he should think about is that if one day you get a partner who loves you so much, and I assure you it will happen you deserve the best, they will love you as the child your father raised and taught not someone who got forced to not be themself and told you to be ashamed of who they are as a person. I wish nothing but the best on your way.
