to the person who is gay in a religious household: i'm a lesbian and i ADORE my dad. he raised me with love and lots of affection and also made sure i wanted for nothing. he was my best friend for a while. but then i grew up, and i became my own person. i realized he was very racist and super homophobic. i told him i loved him, but that i felt uncomfortable around him now, and that these aren't okay things to think about people. he exploded on me. when your dad chose to become a dad, he chose everything that comes with it. that includes taking care of you. you don't owe him anything just because he parents you and loves you. that is literally what a parent is SUPPOSED to do. seeing you say that you would literally give up romantic relationships and even marriage simply because your dad doesn't approve broke my heart. i know his love feels like it's worth sacrificing a whole life of romantic and self-love, but if he truly loves you, he'll accept you. it's not fair of him to say, "i love you, but not this disgusting, abhorrent part that needs to be suppressed" when that "disgusting, abhorrent" part is literally just the gender of the person you love. so yeah that's it bye

I worked as a "budtender" and had the opportunity to work for the country's first cannabis research facility and there is a positive and a negative to the industry. The positive is that now people who use cannabis as medicine for their ailments don't have to break the law in order to get medicated. That aspect of the job was really cool and rewarding and I learned a lot about the science of cannabis and how it can actually help people. The negative is that the owners of dispensaries are overwhelmingly white while there are still people of color in jail for doing the EXACT same thing. It's fucked up that while there are white people capitalizing on the legalization of cannabis, there Are POC in prison for the exact same shit. The industry was built on the backs of POC. Now that dispensaries operate like an apple store, it is time to release A LOT of incarcerated individuals and expunge their records.

I would say the best way to deal with homophobic parents is to create a close circle of friends that are also queer or accept you for who you are, it can be very painful to have your family reject you but having other people who do support you outside of your family can be the best option. It's very important to have at least some other outlet or community that will make you feel loved and accepted so even if you can't find friends that will support you I would recommend making internet friends for support, join a club or a support group where you feel like you can be yourself
@probablypossessed20753 жыл бұрын
Adding to this, don’t listen to people who say “blood is thicker than water,” because one of the origins of that phrase can be translated to “the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb” which means “found fam > bio fam.” Sending love to the question asker!
@rocioreynoso3 жыл бұрын
I have the exact same problem as the person who asked for advice :( I agree that it helps if you have queer and ally friends and a back up plan if you’re threatened to get kicked out like I was. From my experience, over time he’ll realize it’s not his life and get over it (or at least act like he’s over it) you can try to educate them but also you don’t have to be everyone’s teacher. Also I remember feeling bad about my religious immigrant parents providing for their kids and feeling like I “betrayed” them when they’ve done so much for me, but then I realized it is their job to provide for their kids and our education and all because they are the parents. We shouldn’t feel bad that they provide for us because that’s what they should be doing and agreed to do when they had kids and you being yourself is in no way a “betrayal” or a “disappointment” and you should be loved for who you are Also for me, one big reason we just mutually don’t bring it up (even though I have a tiny pride flag in my room) is that I wanna be a dentist so they think I’m their only hope of getting out of poverty, so they stopped calling me slurs like they did when I was first forced to come out. For me they just put that huge part of my life aside and focused on how aside from being lesbian, everything else is ok with me. So you can try to remind them of all the good things you do for them for example, if you have good grades or a good job or help around the home just remind them of that. My mom likes makeover shows so I made her watch those queer eye episodes where they give makeovers to queer people so she sees that we’re normal people who deserve respect and safety, I feel like it helped. I also wanna get married some day but I just figured that if they’re not ok with it by the time I’m engaged, they just won’t be invited and will miss out on such an important moment in their child’s life. I truly hope it gets better and hope my advice helps ❤️ there are lots of resources like the Trevor project if you feel unsafe in your country or home. Remember that so many people support you and love you and want to see you happy and hopefully married someday!

On Bo: his use of the slur feels different because it was levied against him and that’s a lot of the context that he used it in his specials. He was clearly working through some shit. And he has never presented queer people as being bad in any way so as much as hearing that slur grated my ears I never felt like he was using it maliciously. I don’t know I’m a super fan so maybe I’m biased but as a queer person who was called slurs before I even knew I was queer I feel weird gatekeeping people’s discussions of them in their lives.
@swagatron33 жыл бұрын
i feel the same way ! idk how to explain it but the way he was using it felt like he was on our side (queer ppl). im glad he doesnt use it any more but hes had some pretty interesting discussions about it before on a podcast with a comedian i forget the name of. ultimately its a very nuanced and complicated discussion and everyone feels different about it but im happy to afford him the space to learn in that sense, since he was only using it as it was used against himself. i do think he has spoken pretty honestly about it
@stellaluna73 жыл бұрын
I agree, I feel like his use of it was always to satirize homophobic assholes, he never really used it in a derogatory way towards us. Also his song problematic in his new special is sort of comedic but I think parts are serious, such as the parts where he is asking to be held accountable and he is saying he regrets his past. But just because I forgive him doesn’t mean other queer people have to! Also I just want to point out that in the early to mid 2010s, the f slur was extremely normalized to the point where people didn’t even treat it like a slur, just as an insult

I’m looking for a new job now that I’ve realized most dispensaries are just another retail position and most don’t actually care about progression, just money. To the first person's question in the advise segment: I am a queer trans man who grew up with a dad who made extremely offensive comments about queer people all my life. While I can't exactly relate to the religious aspect of that, I completely understand what it is like to have complicated and conflicted feelings about your dad. A lot of the time I would use the trauma that he endured to convince myself that what he was saying and doing was ok, which it obviously is not. When I came out for the first time, he didn't take it well and my relationship with him (which was already fraying) got worse. It took YEARS of arguing, threatening to leave, and therapy for him to be better. But I still have a lot of resentment towards him, even though he's changed. And that's OKAY. My point is: it doesn't matter how well your father cares for your family, he is neglecting your needs and rejecting who you are. That is not love and it is not ok. It is not fair that you have to choose between being who you are and keeping up a relationship with your parents. People will say that he will come around, and maybe he will, my dad did, but there's also a chance that he won't. In which case I will say this: do everything you need to do to stay safe with a roof over your head, and then leave. You are so deserving of love and happiness and your father does not have any right to take that away from you. Just because he's your dad doesn't mean you owe him anything AT ALL. Sometimes you have to leave behind people that you love in order to be happy and live as you truly are. It's painful and hard as fuck but I promise that you'll be okay. You'll make it through. Him being your parent doesn't give him the right to your life, your choices, or your respect. He threw that away when he rejected who you are.

this is a really good comment. I know it wasn't for me, but these kinds of comments always make my own feelings abt my parents feel validated. thank you

my brother got caught with 5G on him (before it was legal ofc) and the cop said “that’s enough to sell” so they arrested him….for 5 grams of weed…. that’s enough for 2 of his blunts. didn’t even believe him that that was his personal weed and he wasn’t selling.

no shade at all but why are so many lgbtq+ people writing in for advice from a cis het dude? if you need specific advice, there are lgbtq+ content creators and podcasts that may be able to give you advice from more similar experiences and perspectives and with more consideration for the various threats and challenges our community faces. kurtis is doing his best and I understand only feeling comfortable writing in to someone who’s content you like but he’s just not going to be able to give you the kind of advice that it sounds like the writers need. so please if you want lgbtq+ advice seek out the community members who can help you and furthermore like a few of them because even people in the community can give bad advice too
@atrapforfools3 жыл бұрын
i agree. it’s not the best idea because then when he does flub some advice (or just doesn’t have any to give), ppl will attack him for it when he wasn’t the guy to ask in the first place. i’m a bisexual black sex worker - i wouldn’t ever dream of asking kurtis for advice pertaining to my own life lol. he’s great just not the right guy.

@@pluto5123 that totally makes sense and isn’t something I even considered bc as a closeted person I sneakily had access to lgbtq+ stuff that I just didn’t share with family so I assumed a similar experience. thank you for explaining where you’re coming from and I totally get your choice to ask kurtis now. I hope some of the comments on this video help you out. (their original comment explained that they don’t have access to openly lgbtq+ creators bc of conservative family so this is the outlet they used)

yall stop commenting on kurtis mustache, if you think he looks good, if you dont think it looks good, if your not used to it, keep it to your self. like does everyone really need to share every opinion they have? i can understand if you can feel a type of way but do not share it. commenting on someones looks after a change can be detrimental to their self esteem. and i feel like everyone knows that. having so many people talk about their appearance no matter what it is, is harmful. doesnt matter if its a joke or not. do not comment on how people look, especially after a frickin change (unless you tell them they just look good in general cause that can boost self esteem) & this doesnt just go for kurtis its for everyone. do better.

Something I did notice from working at my dispensary and getting to know a lot of other dispensaries in Washington, it really does drive me nuts that there’s such a huge lack of representation of the diverse employees (we had a pretty diverse staff for quite some time but the turnover rate is terrible) when it comes to their websites and social media or their marketing strategies. There’s a lot of employees of color at many of the dispensaries in Washington and yet I never see them on the dispensaries websites or in professional images of the shop.

lots of love to the first person asking for advice. it can be really hard to reconcile the loving parent you saw as a kid and the real ass adult with biases and flaws who your parent really is. that’s a lot harder when those biases are a hatred towards you for being yourself and not even things you have a choice over. but the truth is you dad is both of those things. loving and accepting of the things he approves of but also hateful and emotionally abusive towards you. that’s not a healthy situation or a good person to be around. it really hurts to hear the things he thinks are appropriate to say to and around you & that even after all of it you’d rather sacrifice a potential healthy & loving romantic relationship and non-blood but just as deep family of other lgbtq+ people for your blood family who do not love you as a whole person but instead only bits and pieces of you and are keeping you from other loving and healthy relationships. taking you out of school for cutting your hair was not an appropriate repose to a minor appearance change. he was trying to take you away from any of your other relationships that may have been encouraging you to be yourself and supporting you where you’re at instead of just the parts of you he accepts. taking you away from other support is a classic part of abuse. please look into it more and think about if your relationship with your family is really something loving and positive in your life and if it’s worth the mental and emotional toll it’s going to take on you to keep such a big part of yourself and your life hidden just for their comfort.

i really hope corners dad changes, as someone who grew up with homophobic parents that pick and choose when to apply religion to things coming out and the time before coming out was hell. when i came out my mom wasn’t really okay with it but that was in 2017 and since coming out she’s made a lot of progress in becoming an ally. i’m really grateful for the support i currently have but sometimes it’s hard to forget the words that were said by my parents in the past. i’m not close with my dad so i’ve never actually came out to him but in the recent years i just don’t try at all hiding the fact that i’m pan and non binary. my dad wasn’t a good one so i don’t even think he deserves a proper coming out from me because he hardly knows me. BUT BACK TO CORNERS, i really really hope you have at least some support from a close family member or chosen family like a friend group. having friends in the community that you can relate to helps a ton. it’s really your decision on how you want to go about keeping your relationship with your non supportive family members, it’s a really messed up situation to be in but sometimes being away from them can be a good thing and in the best scenario them seeing you thrive and be happy can change their view. and the part about not wanting to just skip over how much your dad has supported you in other ways doesn’t really excuse the stuff he says to you. i know you don’t want to seem ungrateful for the life he’s given you and your family but he IS your dad that was his job anyway and his job is to support you in life and if he won’t support you for the person you are then he doesn’t really deserve to be around you. i honestly can’t even find the right words to even talk about the part about basically comparing gays to monsters. like that’s just so terrible and the fact that he said that to you just blows my mind. we’re not bad people at all and i just hate that people still have the mindset your dad has.

To the person that can't get over Bo Burnham using the F slur. It's absolutely fine if that's how you feel. I think that maybe right now he is getting so much attention and people are generally receiving his special so well that it can feel like everyone is just like, ignoring everything he did before and forgetting about it. But if that's how you feel and honesty that's valid. And yeah, people getting wealthy after using offensive jokes that sucks I get you. - I do love his special but Jesus christ his old stuff 😬 but I am not a gay/bi man so I know my opinion isn't like THE opinion. I'm a bi woman.

I can relate to the second person in the advice segment so much. Sometimes as a queer person, when I hear like, one of my classmates say something homophobic, I get so bothered by it. Even if it isn’t directed at me or my friends, it just kinda gets stuck in my head and I can’t let it go for at least a week. Same with when I find out that a favorite creator of mine has a problematic past. Sure I understand that they were a lot younger and that they have oubviously changed, but I just can’t stop thinking about it when I watch them. But I also feel like this is something that passes with time. Like, even I was at some point an edgy teen that thought saying homophobic and racist slurs was the funniest thing ever and I changed, so why would it be different for other people? But I also feel like Bo should definetely address his past. I don’t think that not addressing it necessarily makes him a bad person, but it would def be nice if he apologized. edit: apparently in his special, Bo has a song dedicated to his problematic past!!

On the Bo Burnham email: i think it’s pretty clear when you look at his recent work that he realizes his past mistakes and is pretty politically aware right now BUT you’re not obligated to like anyone or forgive/forget their mistakes. if you feel uncomfortable with him, just don’t watch his work and it’s ok!
