I have a Bachelor’s in Sociology and took a class on the sociology of religion. here is *my theory* about the influencer-to-religious-nut pipeline: Basically, religion’s main function in society (from a sociology perspective) is to provide a sense of understanding of the world around us, including our fears about life and death, while also making us a member of a community of people who make us feel loved, cared for, and part of something bigger. In other words, it feels good on the self esteem to be a part of a group that believes in something. For an influencer who once thrived off of the attention from anonymous followers and fans, there are many parallels between that and being heavily involved in a religious community, such as the feeling of belonging and an increase in self-esteem and self-worth. However, in this guy’s case (and with many extreme religious people), the ideology gets taken way too far out of context and is then used to feel a sense of control and superiority over people, similar to how he likely felt when he was semi-famous on the internet. Instead of using religion to learn how to be a good human being/how to treat others, he uses it to tell people how to live their lives in order to feel better about himself and his own personal shortcomings. tl;dr: preaching to people about how to live their lives in the name of religion gives this guy the same high as being a former internet personality. anyway that’s just my theory based on what i learned, i could be completely wrong but whatever lol

I'd like to add that religion also gives people a sense of security in times of turmoil and struggle because most religions teach predestination to some extent, so basically what you're going through is out of your hands and not in your control, people going through hard times tend to use religion as a coping mechanism.

As a psyc major I totally agree! Religion brings people a sense of purpose and hope, which I believe is something that might have been missing from their daily lives as influencers. When they’re on the internet their fame is dependent on the day, and they feel like they must impress a lot of people, maybe lose a reason for creating and get lost in the cog of content. Then turning to religion- it can bring out a feeling that you are superior bc you have this thing this god that protects you and you are guaranteed a seat a table in the church and in heaven so you don’t ever have to worry about future or losing that hold you have. Anyways hope that makes sense. TLDR- religion gives people a feeling that social media never could

The only reason I said "my body is a temple of God" is because due to a lack of long term studies on mRNA as a medical therapy, I won't take that risk with my body. I have no issue with vaccines I just have an issue with the lack of safety studies for mRNA specifically. I did a lot of research into the science of things, for weeks. I didn't watch any conspiracy nonsense either, I went to the studies themselves and what medical institutions had to say on the issue. When long term study results are released I will consider getting the vaccine but not before then. I don't think conclusive evidence is too high of a standard and I said in my original comment that I still socially distance and wear a mask. I don't think it's fair to call that nonsense, it's just a different standard for what you're willing to inject yourself with. I'm still careful so I don't see the issue.

@@bekkahboodles I studied immunology and molecular biology in university, and did research for a year specifically in genetics (RNA expression). I know the initial impression for an mRNA vaccine can be scary, but I promise the fundamentals by which these vaccines are based upon are very well understood, and thus when experts explain that the vaccines are very safe, they have the knowledge-base to back that up. The processes involved are part of the central dogma of molecular biology. Essentially, mRNA are short, single-stranded segments of nucleic acid sequences. DNA is the double-stranded form of nucleic acid sequences that exist within the nucleus of every one of your cells (and every one of your cells contains your entire genetic code, aka your genome). mRNA is produced when your cell makes a copy of a small segment of your DNA, which is referred to as “gene expression”. Imagine your DNA is like a recipe book containing all of the info required to make every protein/signal/etc in your body; mRNA is essentially like photocopying a single recipe. mRNA is produced in the nucleus, and later is transported outside the nucleus into the main body of the cell to be translated. DNA is not able to leave the nucleus, and RNA does not re-enter the nucleus once it is transported out. What is important about this is that foreign mRNA does NOT have the opportunity to enter the nucleus and, as a result, cannot access your DNA. Meaning once the mRNA fragments are translated and destroyed, there is no way for it to remain in your body or cause permanent changes. I feel like this is the most common fear I’ve seen online with mRNA, but to be clear, mRNA cannot alter your DNA as it never enters the nucleus (where all DNA is contained). So, what happens to mRNA fragments once they are outside the nucleus? They are ‘translated’ using mechanisms in the cell which can read the nucleic acid sequence and translate it into a chain of amino acids, known as a polypeptide. That polypeptide then goes into a folding process, ultimately producing the final result, which is typically a protein. Going back to the recipe book metaphor, if mRNA is a photocopy of a recipe, the protein is the meal produced by following the recipe. The only difference is that once mRNA is read/translated into a protein, it is quickly degraded. mRNA molecules exist only briefly within cells, from just a few minutes to, at most, a few days. What this means is that after the proteins have been produced, mRNA will naturally breakdown and disappear completely from your body. For mRNA vaccines, this means the only thing left in your body (from the vaccine) after a few days is the proteins that were produced. So what are those proteins? In this case, it is the spike protein found on the surface of the coronavirus molecule. this protein is the key that the virus uses to get into our cells and thus produce an infection, but when it is not attached to the surface of a virus, the spike protein itself is completely harmless and is functionally useless. By producing this protein in our bodies, our immune system will detect it, identify it and produce an antibody to combat it as it recognizes the protein as a foreign body (not part of our DNA). At this point, the body’s response is functionally the same as it would be to a ‘traditional’ vaccine. The body will mount an immune response and eradicate the protein, as it does with any foreign molecule that encounters in our body, but will save some of the antibodies as part of our “acquired immune system/memory immune cells”. So, after a week or two, no trace of the mRNA or the protein remain in the body, but the body will now have antibodies that can recognize and quickly target coronavirus if it ever encounters it again. This is essentially what provides you with protection/immunity, as your body is now able to recognize and eradicate coronavirus before it is able to really establish itself and produce a severe infection. Again, going back to the recipe metaphor, an mRNA vaccine is like receiving a copy of a recipe from a friend, making the meal, and then knowing what it tastes like (being able to recognize that taste in the future). A traditional vaccine is like having your friend give you the meal directly, and then knowing what it tastes like (being able to recognize it in the future). They are functionally doing the same thing in your body. And, to reiterate, the mRNA degrades within a few days of entering your body, and the proteins are eradicated by your immune system typically within 2 weeks (the same way they are after receiving a traditional vaccine). I understand it’s intimidating, and it feels like there isn’t much certainty behind these vaccines, but they are based upon decades and decades of research and an entire field of Biology that has been studied extensively. As a molecular biologist myself (who has studied this field), I wholeheartedly endorse the safety of mRNA vaccines, and I encourage anyone who can to protect themselves to do so. This virus can be extremely harmful/damaging to the body (particularly with lasting/long-term effects), and has taken far too many lives already. It breaks my heart to see people putting themselves in harms way due to a large amount of fear-mongering and misinformation that has wormed it’s way into public consciousness from a small number of conspiracy-minded skeptics and/or anti-vaxx extremists.

To be fair, I was very frustrated after making 3 separate appts to get the Pfizer and always showing up and them trying to give me Moderna. Specifically because I am immunocompromised and had been waiting so long to get my shot... but I am not medically permitted to get the Moderna due to an allergy. So if any of those people were like me, walking out was probably only the beginning of their frustration. It was a huge issue in my area too, and I know several other disabled people who had this problem.

In regards to the person who brought up God when talking about not getting vaccinated, I’m sure God would rather you prioritize the safety of those around you as well as yourself over focusing on the fact that you’re putting a vaccination in your body. One of the major points of Catholicism/Christianity is understanding everyone is made in the image of God and is to be treated with respect and love. In this case, getting vaccinated would be following God’s will as you are respecting the safety of everyone. By getting vaccinated YOU ARE KEEPING PEOPLE ALIVE. Edit: Just got to the part where Kurtis basically brought up this point. Exactly, just because you’re religious doesn’t mean shit in terms of how good of a person you are. Just be respectful of others, it isn’t that hard.

Jew here who actively studies torah: one of the commandments (not the 10 commandments, the other miscellaneous ones in Leviticus etc.) is to prioritize human life over anything. For instance, if you keep kosher and you NEED a medical procedure like the vaccine, even if it was set in gelatine (which it isn't I don't think, but just take the analogy pls I study music and Judaism not medicine) you are obligated to get the vaccine because it will save your life. Human life is so much more important to G-d than anything, and that's not just in "the Jewish part" (aka talmud and mishna) but in the literal "Old Testament" (TaNaKh)

I still prioritize others' safety. He mentioned my comment while addressing anti-vaxxers which is unfortunate because I said in my original comment that I'm not one, nor am I an anti-masker. I still mask and socially distance. I got the first shot so I have some resistance but the lack of long-term studies in relation to *mRNA technology specifically* is what bothers me and fueled my decision to not get the second shot. I have literally no issue with standard vaccines and I realize the gravity of my decision and behave accordingly. I really don't see the issue with choosing to continue to stay home, mask when out, and socially distance. My comment wasn't even made to convince people not to get it, I just left it because Kurtis kept saying "I don't get it" over and over and I wanted to shed some light on why I made my decision.

For the person from the advice segment, I have learned that editing and rewriting all the time is really bad because it can always be better. Editing brings you into an endless cycle and it doesn't get you anywhere. I think writing the whole thing at once and then coming to edit it is the better way. Practicing every day is good but once a week could work too. Good luck and dont give up. We are always a lot harder on ourselves and I'm sure your writing isnt shit.

Hot take - Good Christians don't profit or aim to profit off preaching the gospel. Found the end of a Bible verse for them, John 2:14-16: "And said unto them that sold doves, ‘Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house a house of merchandise." And in another one Jesus kicked people out of the church for making business deals in it. A good Christian would only charge so that they could afford food, shelter, and travel. Anything else would go right to the church, not their pockets. Just sayyyyiiinnng.

okay so i’m not an anti vaxxer/vaccer, and i am fully vaccinated, i’m very liberal, but i do understand why some people are worried below is a rough explanation of general worries expressed, especially by parents or people in clinical trials- i got the vaccine knowing these risks, and i am very happy with my choice so far. okay let’s start- this is really just informational, i don’t wanna make anyone mad and i’m very sorry if i do. i know it’s a touchy subject, and it always will be. my father works in clinical trials, and had a hand in developing the vaccines. the vaccines were made on an emergency basis, which is a certain category that helps vaccines like these be made quickly. and so that means nobody knows the long term effects yet. which is already an issue for some people- when we spend less time developing a vaccine, we know less about how it can effect people in the future. the other issue is mainly seen in people with female reproductive systems. there have been issues where the uterus bloats because of a reaction to some of the vaccines, and there is also a possibility of infertility as well. in the trials, these cases were common enough to draw concern and attention to the issue itself. as far as i know, these were the two things i considered before getting my vaccine. i do believe that we should trust the science, and follow it accordingly- i also think we are all entitled to having enough information about situations in order to weigh the costs and the benefits. overall, there have definitely been some mistakes with the covid vaccine. but they’ve been small percentages. at the end of the day, if you have not gotten vaccinated, i highly recommend you do. if you do not have vaccinations available to you at this time, wear masks, wash your hands, and keep yourself and those you love safe. i’m sorry this was such a long comment, and thank you if you stopped to read it! i just wanted to hopefully explain some of the apprehension people can have when considering such large changes as a mass-distributed vaccine, you know? i think one of the most beautiful things in life is being able to understand where others are coming from, because it promotes tolerance in the world! have a good day y’all

i definately understand being kinda worried about 'mixing' vaccines, because i mean, me, i haven't heard the news or anyone talk about it on the news so it would be a bit scary. i'm fully vaccinated and have been for a couple of months tho n im glad i got it :) i feel great minus when i first got it LOL
