I had a new crown come out a month later. Fortunately no damage to the underlying tooth, so my dentist was just able to pop it back into place. Didn't even charge me!

Excellent vid. But now I can't trust my dentist. He could have saved a tooth instead of pulling it. And he lied and said it was impacted when it was not, I later found on the paperwork after watching this vid.

I had a minor "tragedy" (maybe not). I had a root canal on a molar on the upper left side of my mouth and a crown. Unfortunately, I accidently bit down on an unpeeled pistachio nut and the pain was excrucuating! I checked and found no tooth fragments, but I had to spit out super-hard pistachio nut fragments with glass hard jagged edges into the toilet. Fast-forward a few months: I have pain there. No looseness of crown, thank God. But, I have to push in the crown with my thumb. I am good for a few hours, but then I have to do it again. I have a dental appointment next week I hope and pray I won't hear bad news from the dentist.

No, but I had a scumbag of a dentist talk me into a crown when a small piece of bonding came off of a front tooth. No impressions, no lab made crown, he just carved out my gum and grinded down a healthy tooth to jam in what he had in the office.

I recently had a crown come out and until I can get to a dentist I followed one suggestion (by a retired dentist) to temporarily place it back with denture adhesive. I picket the strongest fixodent I could get and that stuff holds way stronger than I expected! I had to take it out because it was sitting too high. I chipped out the old adhesive, put more denture cream, and placed it back. Sits perfect now. I hope I can find a dentist who will just recement it. I already had one try to sell me a new one.

@@VeryNiceSmileDental I got a second opinion and that dentist showed me a dark brown area of the tooth the he says was further decay. He claims the bacteria getting under the crown and causing the decay is likely the cause of the adhesive failing. He also suggested a new crown although for a completely different reason than the last dentist who said there was a small part of the tooth that wasn't fully covered by the crown. I'm supposed to return to the second dentist Thursday so he can 'remove the decay and build up the tooth' before having a new crown made. He was offering to do it right then and there but ultimately his recommendation was to have it done fairly soon to prevent the tooth from decaying further or breaking in the meantime resulting in the need for an implant. I don't like making snap decisions with $1000 price tags so I opted to wait until Thursday. I'm bummed but his reasoning seems sound although he basically made the decision within seconds of looking in my mouth.

@@r.rodriguez4991 Stain of the tooth stub/stump is not necessarily decay. The prepped tooth doesn't look very good. I believe that before recement the crown and tooth both need to be very clean and both need to be free of any wetness or moisture at the moment cement is applied and the crown is pushed forceably into proper position and held there with pressure for a prescribed amount of time. I believe the slightest bit of moisture can cause the crown to come off too easily. Difficult to control saliva sometimes with the "dam" and suction,perhaps a prescription medicine taken before the dental appointment session could help reduce the flow of saliva.

With some cements crowns can come off fairly easily because of aggressive flossing. I believe that dentist preferred not to use the absolute strongest cement available so as to have a option to remove the crown without destroying it. Also the Powerbar and certain kinds of candy can pull off crowns and fixed bridges.

What if the post comes out with the crown, but the post is completely smooth? There's no bone or other debris on the metal underbelly of the crown, it's just a little brown- what I assume is the remainder of the cement. I see in your example, the post looked like a screw of sorts. My crown is nothing like that. Is the tooth likely still to be cracked, preventing it being re-cemented, or was it just a simple failure of the cement due to biting having caused it undue pressure? History: I did a faceplant as a kid and had a filling. Got an abscess and had to have root canal done, killing the tooth and had a veneer to stop it being black. After an operation as an adult, I fainted during after-effects of anasthesia, and re-broke the tooth. Had to have a crown with a post because there was too little usable tooth remaining. Few years later, bit into a bread roll, and it came out.
@VeryNiceSmileDental
@VeryNiceSmileDental Жыл бұрын
Hi, the post can be smooth. Depending on what type of post it is, there are several different styles of posts, even custom made ones. Have your dentist take a look at your tooth. There is a chance that it could be recemented but based on the history of the tooth, there is a good chance it's fractured and needs to be removed. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

I've never had a crown come lose - at least that I recall. However, i've had gold onlays fall out and the dentist (not the one that initially placed the onlays) was always able to re-cement it in a few minutes. The funny thing is that in every case, the DA always brings in the wrong cement assuming they are porcelain.

@VeryNiceSmileDental Жыл бұрын
Hi, some zinc phosphate cements are fluoride free. Polycarboxylate cement is fluoride free. C&B Metabond by Parkell might be fluoride free you would have to check with the manufacturer. A lot of the newer cements tend to have fluoride. Even the resin cement that I use has fluoride added to it.
@robroy289
@robroy289 Жыл бұрын
Well done on this video! Scanning your channel I see quite a few videos I want to watch so I'm a new subscriber. In the case where the whole tooth has come out, what type of cement would you use to glue it back into the socket? It's never hurt or been infected, but clearly needs a more permanent solution. Problem is, more involved dentistry services aren't free and not everyone can pay thousands for a bridge/partial/implant. One dentist glued it back and it lasted 10 years. When it finally came out again, another glued it back and it lasted about a year. This is a dramatic difference in the amount of time it lasted so I suspect that the second dentist used a different cement because he was expecting me to return for more work on that tooth. I do understand that everything involved is deteriorating and that can affect how well a glue-job lasts, but I also suspect a different glue was used both times as cements continue to evolve. I'm vaguely familiar with the different types of dental cements/adhesives and am curious what you would recommend as the best for this scenario so I can discuss that with the next dentist that glues it back for me. Just wondering what the most permanent cement would be for this as it's not bonding to any other dental work and I can't afford any extensive solution in the foreseeable future. Some cements are more temporary than others.
@VeryNiceSmileDental
@VeryNiceSmileDental Жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm not quite understanding your question. Are you talking about just the crown coming off of the tooth or the entire tooth coming out of the jaw? If the entire tooth comes out of the jaw, it usually can't be replaced. If the crown comes off the tooth, it may be possible to have it recemented. The type of cement I will use depends on what material the crown is made of. For gold, porcelain fused to metal, and zirconia crowns I typically use a resin reinforced glass ionomer cement, www.gc.dental/america/products/operatory/cements/gc-fuji-plus For Emax or feldspathic porcelain crowns and veneers, I will use a composite resin cement along with a dentin bonding agent. For a crown to stay in place long term, it needs to have a good fit to the tooth underneath it. If your crown didn't stay in place as long the second time it was cemented, part of the tooth under it may have broken off or been lost to decay. I also check the bite when recementing a crown. If the bite is off and places too much lateral pressure on the crown it can come loose.

New Gold crown came off on a Saturday. Went to dentist on Monday. He put it back without any explanation. I told him it had a hole in it. He said “yeah I know. I told you it’s from you grinding your teeth” Since I had an issue with another tooth that was very painful and needed more immediate attention, no other explanation about the crown with a hole in it was given. I’m now very concerned and confused. I don’t even know what was used to put the crown back on. Also I originally was told I was getting a zirconia crown but he changed it to gold without asking.

Gotcha. Is it a through and through hole in the crown or is it only through the porcelain. Sometimes if the height of the tooth is not trimmed down enough during the crown preparation appointment, then the porcelain on the final crown is too thin and gets ground away when the dentist adjusts the bite on the crown.

Fine job of explaining, Doc. Question ...last year a 35 year-old crown that had been posted in finally came out. The dentist said the upper front tooth where it was posted was almost gone, and would need to come out pretty soon. But as it was of course a cosmetically important tooth he agreed to just recement it back in that day. He charged me $150 for this quick job, but because the bite was not aligned properly the glue failed just 10 months later. The dentist who replaced him refused to re-cement, and insisted I needed a much costlier bridge *if* the other two adjacent teeth could act as pillars. I said fine, but I don't have the $3k available today, could you please just re-cement the old one back in? She flatly *refused,* claiming it was a safety hazard. I could swallow and choke on it, she said. I indicated it was a small risk that I was willing to take. She flatly refused, deciding for us. I left furious with the old crown slipping, and when I got home I gave that dental office a one star review. So, ... was she right to deny me the only type of care I wanted and could afford? Thanks.

Hi, sorry to hear about your situation. There are times when it's unsafe to recement a crown. I won't recement a crown if the tooth is abscessed or if I feel the crown won't stay in place. Swallowing a crown is usually not a big deal, but aspirating it, having it go into the lungs is a big deal. That being said, I have also heard of dentists that refuse to recement any type of crown or bridge that they didn't make. In your situation I hope your dentist was looking out for your well being and refused to recement it for a good reason. Have you gotten a second opinion?
@charliemichaels452
@charliemichaels452 8 ай бұрын
Thanks@@VeryNiceSmileDental. I called another dentist and they said they would not re-cement someone else's work. Doesn't make much sense to me. What would you think of an optician who refused to put back in place a scratched lens that fell out of your eyeglasses' frame because of a tiny loose screw because they believed the lens wasn't very good, or because you didn't buy the eyeglasses from this store? You'd be right to suspect that optician was trying to force you to purchase a new pair of glasses. And if you heard the same thing from two more opticians you could be forgiven for suspecting this was an industry-wide practice whose main purpose was to generate revenue. If defective eyeglasses is all you can afford that day the optician should give you that option, and not force you to go without eyesight entirely because giving you less than the best is "against policy." Fortunately CVS has inexpensive repair kits for crowns that fail, and that actually work. So I got my front tooth back in my mouth and two contemptible dentists got 1 star reviews on Yelp. Hopefully the glue will hold till I can afford the bridge I need. Isn't medical capitalism great? 😨
@VeryNiceSmileDental
@VeryNiceSmileDental 8 ай бұрын
Sorry to hear the second office let you down. It doesn't make sense to me either. As long as the tooth and crown are okay, I have no problem recementing a crown. I know some dentists also refuse to adjust or repair a denture or partial denture that they didn't make.

Thanks@@pany167. I believe they shaved the original front tooth down to a post, and then pinned the crown well into that post, and cemented the rest to it. But about 18 months ago the bottom half of the original post broke, and the steel pin eventually detached itself from the remaining upper part of the post, and then came out. Since then it's been recemented back twice, even though there's not much left to recement everything to. I imagine it's just a matter of time before it will need to be recemented again. I do my best to not use that tooth, but my tongue and upper lip still put pressure on it, and i guess one day ... I'm wondering why my dentist didn't suggest what you're suggesting. Perhaps at my age - mid 60s - an implant wouldn't last long? Hmnn ...

Can you put resin to a crown?
@VeryNiceSmileDental

As a cement or to repair a chip? Resin cements are common to use for crowns, especially all porcelain crowns. You can repair a chip with resin but it usually doesn't last very long. There is usually a reason why the crown chipped.

Hi, it's a similar material to what dentists use as a temporary material. It's not super sticky. Your crown has to fit back into place pretty well to be able to use this material. But that's also true for permanent cements that a dentist uses. If your crown doesn't fit back on the tooth well it can't be recemented.

@VeryNiceSmileDental

Hi, sorry to hear about your situation. I would check a couple of things. First check the bite on the crown. If the bite is too heavy it can lead to the crown coming loose, especially when you move your jaw side to side. If that's the issue, that should be a simple fix. The other thing I would check is the shape of the core buildup/tooth underneath the crown. There should be enough for the crown to grab onto securely. The sides of the tooth under the crown should be almost parallel with just a slight taper. It shouldn't be shaped like a cone or tee pee. It should also be tall enough (stick up higher than your gums). Good luck and let me know what happens when you see your dentist.

Hi, I prefer using custom abutment posts and cementing the crowns on top of the post. With the newer implant designs, loose screws don't happen much anymore. Removing the crowns for cleaning is not typically done. Even for a full arch bridge (like an all on 4) it's no longer recommended to remove the bridge to clean it.

My post is inside the crown looks like a screw sticking out. Broke off Friday at 6 I’m worried can’t get to a dentist till Monday . I went to urgent care n they said no infection but want me to take amox till I see a dentist in two days. I feel no pain. They also have a mouth rinse to keep clean . Is the antibiotic necessary until I see dentist ? I’m asking bc yes I’m worried about infection but a mix makes me feel sick . N I feel ok right now. But urgent care dr said take it for precaution . Since my dentist won’t return my calls on Saturday I’m hoping you could say if antibiotics are necessary or not at this point . I know you can’t see it so it’s not medical advice but asking if you can address how it’s mostly treated if you can’t see a dr for few days and if infection is likely with crown off . Thank you. Hi, I had a patient call me several weeks ago with a similar complaint. Their molar crown came out with the post still sticking out of the crown. When I spoke with them on the phone they weren't having any pain or discomfort, and no signs of an infection (pain, swelling, pus). I recommended that they just rinse out after eating until they could get in to see me at the office. Once they came, they tooth needed to be extracted because it had cracked catastrophically. I usually don't prescribe antibiotics unless there are signs of an infection present, such as pain, swelling, redness, pus, etc. Good luck with your tooth. I hope your dentist returns your call today. Let me know how it goes.
