Bloody hell this takes me back, 17 years old with 3 mates following the rally in a 1256 Vauxhall Chavette..... slow as fuck and freezing cold sleeping in between stages.... I’ll never forget it

Really instructive watching Jimmy McRae use 4th and 5th on the faster bits of the gigantic Welsh mudslide. Nice to hear the car too, it gives an idea of why he was doing it. I think that's why I spend so much time watching older footage - certainly pre mid-90s anyway - I can see and hear what's going on. It still gives me the sense of 'I wanna do that' that I had then! (I was 14 in 1987) 😊 Thanks again for keeping us entertained 👏

The Lancia Delta looks a bit pedestrian compared to the S4 of two years earlier, the Sierra 500 looks as good as I remember though.

Hafren 1 looks like part of Sweetlamb....I've spectated up there on a few events over the years.

You have to put it into perspective. In 1987 the camera crews didn't have internet uploads, so all the physical tapes had to be driven to an edit suite (maybe a van) in time to be edited and be shown only a few hours after the cars were filmed. The the signal had to be sent via microwave link from a van to a BBC operations center to be transmitted. Not much time for fancy editing. And no edit software either. All done "on the fly" between two video tape recorders and a mixing desk.

It's not VHS Rallies' fault, this is the BBC's original program. The only thing added is the really small watermark on the corner, and the beginning and end information slides, which, as far as videos go, are very tasteful and unintrusive. I'm just grateful that he has these rallies and is taking the time to upload them. These are much better than the spectator videos that are often the only publicly available videos of these events.
