Boat Friends,
Witness the legendary ship Arthur M. Anderson's departure from Duluth on June 28, 2024. Amidst rain and fog, this iconic vessel left the Canadian National Dock with a full load of iron ore. Known for its storied past, the Arthur M. Anderson delivered a powerful horn blast that resonated through the misty air. The captain even waved to the enthusiastic crowd, who gathered with umbrellas to witness this spectacular event.
The Arthur M. Anderson is one of the most revered ships on the Great Lakes, celebrated for its rich history and resilience. Named after a former chairman of U.S. Steel, this vessel has played a crucial role in transporting iron ore across the lakes.
The Canadian National Dock in Duluth is a vital hub for maritime activity, handling significant iron ore cargo. This departure highlights Duluth's importance as a key port in the Great Lakes region.
Carrying a full load of iron ore, the Arthur M. Anderson showcases the strength and capacity of Great Lakes freighters. This cargo is essential for various industries, making these journeys vital for regional commerce.
On June 28, 2024, Duluth experienced heavy rain and fog, adding a dramatic backdrop to the Arthur M. Anderson's departure. Despite the weather, many dedicated ship watchers gathered to witness this moment, creating a memorable scene with umbrellas dotting the harbor.

The Arthur M. Anderson holds a special place in maritime history and in the hearts of many. Its legacy is marked by the remarkable bravery and assistance it provided during the search for survivors of the Edmund Fitzgerald in that fateful storm. This vessel’s story is one of heroism and resilience, and it deserves to be preserved for future generations. We all know that one day, the Arthur M. Anderson will be retired. When that time comes, it is imperative that this vessel be transformed into a museum, ensuring its legacy endures. The mere thought of scrapping this historic ship is inconceivable. I hold a deep affection for the Arthur M. Anderson, as evidenced by the photos and prints I cherish. I hope you all share my passion for preserving this iconic ship’s legacy.

I personally feel like the Anderson is a living reminder of the bravery of not only Captain Cooper and his crew, but of all who sail the Great Lakes. I sure hope she enters a new service life as a museum ship when it's time for her to retire. Thanks for putting on your boots and going out to share her with us, Mike!

I’m so glad that you mentioned Captain Cooper! What a straight up hero. Like other ships, the Coast Guard said you don’t have to go out if you think you will endanger your crew. He stepped up to the plate and went to help fellow sailors.

I did some investigating a couple of years ago & it led me TO Duluth! 48 years ago, I was a new Bride, setting up our first home. My, then husband, was in the U. S. Navy, out to Sea. I hooked up my combined Record Player/ Radio, found the local FM Station in that little North Florida town and heard, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” . I didn’t know then, that it was less than 1 year of the report being sung! Then, as now, that introduction haunts me. I listen to it each day as I dress. I can’t forget the lyrics, they, too haunt me. I have, in my investigation, found the names of the 29 men, recorded them, their positions on the ship and their hometowns. Living on the Atlantic Ocean, there have been quite a few ships/ boats lost in our waters. We have a “Fisherman’s Memorial” at our Inlet. A lady I took care of had lost her eldest son on December 8, 1984. He and two friends, all named Robert purchased a fishing boat from a man In the Southern part of the Barnegat Bay. One of the young men drove the other 2 to get the boat. The 2 we’re planning to bring her home by water. The boat was NOT seaworthy and the 2 young men “went down” with their boat. Their names are on a plaque at that Memorial. It is a statue of the one in Gloucester, MA. I go to that Memorial on November 10, each year, with a small bell and very quietly speak each name, their age and job, then ring the bell after each one. Last year, a man fishing asked me what I had done. I explained to him that I didn’t want the only ones to remember these brave men to be now, “the son’s & the daughter’s”. That they fought against the elements that entire night before, were most likely, cold, wet and hungry before the Sea that IS Lake Superior took their lives, in a second. I suggested he do some research of his own.

Wyoming, I have something funny to tell you about this. When I first started recording these videos over a year ago, I would mention grandmas many times. However, to us locals, we don’t think of anything besides the restaurant. Many people would send me emails saying how cool it is that my grandma lives right next to the lift bridge. I would point my camera over, but I wouldn’t show that exact restaurant. People thought my grandma lived in an apartment building next to the bridge the way I was talking. I always try to clear that up by talking about the onion rings when I mentioned that place now.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

English and Spanish translation below: ¡Quiero decir MUCHAS gracias! ¡Eres muy generoso! No puedo decirte cuánto te aprecio. Nuevamente quiero agradecerles mucho. ¡Que tengas una noche maravillosa, amigo mío! ⛴️🙏👍 I want to say thank you SO MUCH! You are very generous! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you. These ships are more than objects that move by us. There’s a lot going on in the world. However, these ships allow us to relax for a moment and think about something that is very pure and noncontroversial. I love these ships! I can tell you love the ships too. I’m lucky to live by this Lift Bridge here in Duluth, so the least I can do is post fun videos documenting the ships into peoples living rooms, on phones, or any other way they consume KZbin. Again, I want to thank you so much. Have a wonderful night my friend!⛴️🙏👍

A like with Mike is such an easy thing. Once again Mike you have proved why you have so many subscribers and followers, I like to call them friends. Rain, snow, sleet, fog, ice, no weather can deny you. The Arthur M Anderson is my favorite Great Lakes freighter, and for that matter any ship on any water; as you have stated there is said reason why. Me personally, I can not get enough of the older great lakes freighters such as it, the Munson, and so on. Wonderfully once again you've managed to go above and beyong just filming the ships as you have covered touristy things in the area, I hope to partake soon. I do wonder one thing, what is the closet you have been to someof the loading docks?
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike 8 күн бұрын
These older Great Lakes freighters are unfortunately getting very old and even though I don’t want to say it, their days are numbered just because of age. we have to enjoy them while they are here. However, we have great welders and people that work in the industry that can keep these ships repaired and running. That’s what matters. Let’s keep them floating on the water as long as they can.

Every master's salute she gives, I feel, is for her lost mate the Edmund Fitzgerald. I can't wait to hear from Bob K, former Coast Guardsman on the Woodrush. I'm sure he will tell that the Woodrush was on Bravo-6 that night (6 hour response time) and they had the ship moving in about 2 and a half. Incredible men and women of the USCG. From the ole days of the US Life-Saving Service, predecessor to the Coast Guard, the rules say you have to go out but they don't say to have to come back. Absolute heroes each and every one of the USCG. Bravo Zulu

Hey Mike and All the Global Boat Friend Nation, from an 80 degreeBismarck. I see you have had a ton of rain and we had a good rain yesterday. Feel bad for the friends that are short of rain. Historic vessel this date riding low in the water with a load of iron ore pellets. What thoughts they must have leaving Duluth, and remembering that fateful nite in 1975, when they agreed to follow the Fitz in that terrific storm. Now we will hear from one of the sailors who was tasked to follow the track on the Coast Guard ship that was in Duluth and ordered out to look for survivors. This ship was no doubt the one the Coast Guard referred to when they talked to Bernie Cooper to turn back into the storm to look for the Fitz or survivors. They mentioned that no other ship able to and the nearest CG vessel was laid up in Duluth for repairs. Mikes next video with one of Sailors on that vessel should shed a lot of light on that mission, as they must have known what the outcome would be, but yet they ventured out risking their lives for the small chance they could find survivors. That my friends defines bravery, especially if the CG vessel was subpar to start with. They did it because they are Sailors, and any one of them would do the same for any and all of the rest of them….. Bernie Cooper asked the CG on that call basically do you realize what you are asking me to do?😢 That is why we pray for fair winds and calm seas for all these brave sailors and beautiful ships that ply the Lakes every day for a living….. Always 3 long and 2 short for this great vessel……..

Thank you for the great video of the Anderson. At over 70 years old it is very old even for a great lakes bulk carrier. I am sure the Edmond Fitzgerald was more than fully loaded when it went down in that faithful storm. I read and realized the Fitzgerald was in a competition for speed and capacity for every trip. I am sure the upper management placed pressure on the captain to travel much faster with even more weight than in previous trips to break records. Caring more weight faster is money for the bulk cargo companies. The steel plants could make much more steel faster with more iron ore moved to their steel plants from Minnesota iron ore mines. These huge longer and very narrow, all under 90 feet wide flex with every swell. That framework and structure are constantly flexing fatiguing the steel of the frame of the ship. Once these ships are pushed beyond their lifetime and limits something will fail. We all suffered to hear and read about the Fitzgerald tragedy.

Hi Wendy. The captain of the Fitz was known as a 'heavy weather' guy....often putting out when others would seek shelter. It was going to be his last run before he retired. Whether it was the company and/or the captain that made the final call to complete one more trip......we'll never know for sure. What we do know is it was a very sad day in Great Lakes Maritime history.

I don’t think it is an exaggeration to say that the Anderson is nobility amongst the Great Lakes freighters. We all know the story regarding how the Anderson was not only the last ship to be in communication with the Fitzgerald prior to her tragic sinking in Lake Superior, but that she was also the ship that braved the fierce storm to go out and search for survivors after the Fitz went down in the gale. Of course, it is the courage and upright character of Captain Cooper and his crew that we recognize in this decision, as he determined the course of action, not the ship- but nevertheless, the Anderson is inextricably linked to Captain Cooper’s heroic actions, and it was the vessel that safely carried these searchers on their valiant (but unfortunately, unsuccessful) search. What a legacy this freighter has, as whenever it appears, those who see it will think of these acts of heroism and courage. She continues to bring honor to the memory of her late captain who once stood at the helm, and she will do so for as long as she is sailing the blue waters of our Great Lakes. If I had been standing by the channel as this ship came by, I would have felt a quiet sense of awe and wonder as I watched her pass.

There are many ships that are very historic on the Great Lakes but when we start thinking about Cooper and what he did that night. It’s nothing short of amazing. We can go down a rabbit hole that could last forever if we really wanted to research these great lakes ships, storms, etc. It’s so fascinating to be caught up with maritime history.

@@vibewithmike Yes, I am learning that! I have always liked ships, but was never too familiar with them (other than my dad’s stories of the Queen Mary) til discovering the Duluth harbor cam channel- which then caused me to discover yours. I am enjoying learning many things about this fascinating subject! I agree- it was amazing that Captain Cooper went back out into that storm after reaching safe harbor. Everyone would have understood if he had refused- but he didn’t. I saw a documentary interviewing him and he seemed like a humble man of quiet courage….not about boasting, but just about doing the right thing. I know at least one other ship went out to search that night, as well- and though I don’t know the name of the captain or of the vessel, he is also to be commended.

@janetryan9779 I didn’t know much about the ships since I grew up in Minneapolis where there are no ships. I fell in love with these huge iron boats when I was young. I enjoy learning more about them each day. All the best to you! 👍👋⛴️

Think of the intestinal fortitude that the crew of the Arthur M. had to have to search for the Edmund’s survivors. Bad storm on a bad day with a worse result.

Mike, you are so right......watching the Anderson never gets old! The weather wasn't good in your video. And obviously the weather was just terrible on that fateful night in 1975. Folks, starting at 1:56 you get a good glimpse of two old anchors. Here is a great link which describes what you are seeing. www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=21027 The U.S.C.G. Cutter Woodrush recovered one of these anchors in 1973. Keep in mind that the same Woodrush actually helped search for survivors of the Fitz. She sailed out of Duluth in the monster waves.

Ralphy, I was thinking about you. How’s everything going in St. Paul? I heard there were a few places down in the Twin Cities that actually canceled the fireworks. Did it rain at 10 PM down there in the Twin Cities or where you dry?

@@vibewithmike it rained until about 6 then it was beautiful. We lit off about $1500 worth of fireworks for a huge crowd. I played range safety officer and we pulled it off without a hitch. We plan to go bigger next year.

@ralphyboy3636 that a boy! I’m sure they were plenty Roman candles that were in the mix. Maybe you can say I still am a kid at heart. There’s something still cool about lighting one of those tanks on the ground.

@@vibewithmike the smallest thing we had were 200 gram cakes. Somebody brought a brick of firecrackers so I ripped it in half and told a couple guys on my firing team to go be a bad influence and give them to the kids in the crowd. We had 2 inch canister shells and a bunch of big cakes (500g) and bigger. But after my military experience? Regular fireworks are rather pathetic.

Great video Mike! I had forgot that the Anderson’s relation to the Fitzgerald. On a side note, how do you decide whether to video from the north or the south side?
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike 8 күн бұрын
It all depends on lighting. I want the light at my back so that way it doesn’t interfere with the lens, looking straight out the sun. However, if there’s a big crowd and something exciting on the north pier I would rather have that so you can feel the excitement of what’s going on.
