the frustration endured by stueber & also major brezler almost certainly gave those two men PTSD, you don't have to be in combat for war to fuck you up. Brezler warned against an insider attack against the pedophile police chief and was courtmartialed for revealing classified documents & was almost tried for treason as well. Afghanistan is a frustrating and mentally taxing place for Americans and us Canadians [while we were there] let alone, a frustrating war. these men are stronger than you or I could ever dream of being. their levels of restraint are at the very least, legendary.

A little bit of context : After D-Day and the few years of the vietnam war, the US military realized that most soldiers did not use their weapons at all, and that most of those who did, did not aim to kill. This was considered a problem, and to adress this issue, the US military devised a doctrine called "zone fire" which encouraged soldiers to shoot in the general direction of the threat, in order to deshinibit the use of weapons. Takeaway 1 : there was a time americans were shy about using their guns. Takeaway 2 : there was an american doctrine telling the soldiers to do sort of what the afghans do.

When I was in college 2011, there was a veteran in my class. For whatever reason, he agreed to answer questions about his time. I asked him "Do you think that any of our efforts will last when we leave". He said "no I don't think they will" and the whole class went silent. Looking back I regret asking such a pointed question but it taught us the truth about these conflicts. Needless to say, I was not surprised when the government collapsed.

It may have been a pointed question but it was a necessary one, you had the guts to ask the right question so to speak. I was with 9th ESB in 2011 when they made improvements to a road near Marjah and we lost a few people because of it; I wasn't directly involved with improvements but I was supporting from nearby FOBs. I talked to an infantryman around 2015 and he said that it became so filled with IED's that they had to destroy it on their way out which essentially made the whole operation pointless in the end. We knew this was likely to happen back then but we had to grin and bear it because "hearts and minds" and the leadership wanted their medals.

no doubt...inbread fucktards
@CeeKayz0rz5 жыл бұрын
@@kzap70 Actually, Afghanistan has an illiteracy rate of 80-90% because of its extreme poverty, which is largely due to foreign relations with Pakistan (Pak and Taliban keep AFG poor so AFG has no choice but to rely on marijuana and opium as its major productions, of which the Taliban and Paki government reap all the reward).... The nomadic nature of much of its people also complicates things, and the radical islam mixed with a constant warring atmosphere since 1979 hinders overall education as well. Afghanistan was actually doing quite well for itself, culturally and economically speaking, up until the mid-1970's, when radical Islam and the Soviet Union both thought they should have Afghanistan... Ultimately, the US saw the Soviet-Afghan thing as a good way to totally fuck the USSR, and made a bad choice to side with radical Islam to "aid them in their struggle against Communism".... Admittedly, the radicals back then weren't as radical as they are now (or when we respectively took them out, etc), but it was still a not-great idea... Anyway, Afghanistan due to these factors has devolved to the state seen in this video, and it's kind of disgusting... In fact, according to locals, it's absolutely no different than under Taliban rule, once the Americans aren't watching... Life under the ANA/ANP/etc. is just like under the Taliban, except they're called the "Afghan National Police" and etc. now... Oh also, when that PB just walks off a day or two later and is never seen again? Yeah, that's stupid common with the native forces... They'll come in, they won't like someone or something, and they'll just fuck off out to nowhere, usually with their gear.... And you see how they took the barricade down and sold the motherfucker? Yeah, they do that shit all the time, too; absolutely no foresight. Either that, or they know they won't put up any sort of resistance, and instead just want the money for hash, opium, and pot seeds.....

The US didn't leave SAMs this time (there being no reason to do so) and the rest of the gear is obsolete like HMMWV junk light trucks. It has symbolism to Bubba but the US has no need for that gear which is why it got FMSed in the first place. JLTV is the replacement for HMMWV and remedies the faults of a weak NATO liaison vehicle never intended for direct combat and very bad at surviving attack (as demonstrated from Mogadishu to present day).. I actually DO remember and have studied both wars. Operation Cyclone was a bargain against the Soviet Union and carried out by competent operatives. What should never have happened is "nation building" which is a direct assault on local culture hence doomed to failure.

I spent three years in Afghanistan and sadly this only scratches the surface. Getting on the plane was like going on a time machine. If you took away the cars and the few generators they have most of the country hasn't changed in 2000 years. It was like working with cavemen.

Russia haven't reformed the entire country, their are people living in compounds in the dessert who when showed a picture of 9/11 thought it was Kabul, they have no media outlets or electronic devices. They dont even know what their own capital looks like ffs. Russia may have made some difference but the OP is right, these people are living centuries behind.

I love VICE’s old documentaries about war, especially when they get close up into the action

The footage is not VICE's. They are reviewing a pretty famous journalists work.

That's the thing is these men aren't soldiers. They're regular people who don't see the full scope of the war and/or don't want to deal with it. They also think of war in a different way than modern american soldiers do. It's more like they are waging war in the way people did in the 1800s.
@sevenproxies42555 жыл бұрын
So, they're no different from most soldiers throughout history then. "Professional" soldiers are a minority throughout history. Most soldiers were either volunteering civilians, or conscripted civilians. Even as late as WWII, most infantrymen only had basic training by todays standards.
