@@flaviusbelisarius7517 It's called 'trigger happiness'. Same thing happened in WW II with amatuer soldiers to the point where it became an extensively researched topic. It really boils down to training and proper discipline within the unit. One of the reasons for it could be that they're scared, so instead of actually engaging the enemy he just lets them know "hey! we're here, we see you and we've got more weapons than you." Same reason why someone might wanna keep them at pointystick distance instead of knife distance. With the knife someone's getting hurt, with the stick the option of retreat is left open. The likeliness of those bullets doing anything to the enemy is probably close to the likeliness that they fly over to the next village and hits a farmer.

I felt bad for Major Steuber. You can tell during the visit by the ambassador that he wanted to speak up and tell the truth about how horrible it was all going, but due to military protocol you generally don't say anything unless asked. You can just see the distress in his eyes. This is what irritates me when people claim that we never cared about being over there, and that we were somehow there to exploit the country and its resources. Overarching policy, perhaps, but many of our soldiers on the ground truly believed in the mission. It's sickening that so much blood and treasure has been lost to this ultimately pointless war.

I was hesitant to watch this for years thinking it would be some anti-military propaganda or something along those lines. I will be the first to admit that I am wrong. This documentary really shows the "damned if we do, damned if we don't" nature of US-Afghan relations at the time, and it's saddening to me to see that there is so little that can be done, but so much that should.
