no, its because life is competitive, and everyone has their issues. attacking others is an easy way for people to feel better by feeling superior, and the easiest way to get that feeling is attacking others over insecurities and weakness. People who do this generally do so out of being hurt themselves in some way, but thats many people even if self induced, so we have many people who mock and bully other. some forms of bullying is completely healthy, biological and constructive, but thats defined by exclusively targeting negative qualities that are changable and typically ones that limit your contribution to groups.

I knew a girl who had this procedure because she had leukemia as a child and her growth stopped at 149 cm. After years of complications she was eventually 15 cm taller, but her bones were weaker so she could no longer run and jump, as they would just snap. The thing is that after all this, her body is very disproportionate, and that is what people notices now. So not worth it. We are all different. Unconditional love is the answer.

I had this surgery but because of the deformity in my leg, not because of height (even tho I'm just 156cm) my doctor decided not to lenghten my leg because of a high risk of complications, still I had a nerve failure and haven't fully recovered to this day. My height is 5 feet 3 inches and I am from India. Being a man who is 26 years old I can say that its hard to be short if you are man. I was mocked, humiliated and I was always put down by everyone be it my so called friends, parents or my siblings. It was hard for me to make friends or have normal conversation with anyone. Always while talking to my parents or elder sister they very subtly would bring my height into it and used to say disrespectful things. But now I have made peace with everything. I cannot change height. Mostly it depends on your genes and environment in which you are brought up. Even my mother is so short and father also not too tall but they want a tall son. And people in my school and college who disrespected me because of being short was not about height, it was about making me insecure because I had better grades than them. So to people who are short I have to say that its not your fault. First accept that you are short and there is nothing wrong in that. Work on your skills, be best in it. You can be an unattractive person but useful person too.

It took me yearssss before I could finally accept and love my facial and body features. It's far from the beauty standard society has installed to people, but I love every inch of it. My legs take me to places I need to, and I'm on a healthy scale. My hands allow me to work from home, helps me do my make up, can cook, can do basic household chores, and I'm grateful for it. I wish people the same, so we would never feel the need of validation from other people.

This broke my heart i am literally crying, as a meducal professional i've seen many maaany people with that external fixator devices that got infected and i've done many wound dressing for them , the pain is unimaginable my heart was shattered into pieces when i remembered their faces in pain To see someone willingly undergoing this type of procedure made me even sadder , i understand his pain i feel him and he doesn't had to go through all that pain just to please people There's nothing wrong with him , his height is normal and he is a handsome and successful man and he deserves to be loved for who is he If he just had more support and affirmative words he would've avoided all that unnecessary pain Bless his heart i hope he fully recovered from that procedure and he is in a better place now both mentally and physically

Interesting self-leveling system on that two ring support-stretcher! I had no idea that interoscular nails were put down the long bones to maintain longitudinal and lateral stability. It makes sense. Not my call, but it seems to me that such surgery might best be reserved for treating deformities and length/alignment anomalies due to accidents or congenital defects.

I am 31 years old and have 158 cm height (almost the same as his). I can genuinely understand his pain and the reasons behind this drastic decision. In school, fellow students constantly bullied and made fun of me because of my height. No one cared how intelligent I was. At my job, many of my colleagues made fun of me. No one cared how productive I was. Knowingly and unknowingly I was always humiliated because of my height.

It’s very unfortunate that this brilliant man went so far just to make others happy. During thanksgiving I went to a wedding where the groom is 5’ and the bride is 5’11, no joke. The groom has the ego of a 6’4 man and is very accomplished professional in Education. I’m sure people weren’t kind to him either especially when he was younger but his spirit radiates through the room. He has a large group of friends and his wife adores him. Learn to love yourself and others will gravitate towards you.

Update: The amount of snarky and "clever" comments here is the exact reason why I'm so glad that my husband doesn't let people like this bother him at all. My brother had this procedure done in the eighties because he was born one leg shorter than the other. He ended getting addicted to opiates early in life because of the pain from the surgery and subsequent physical therapy. He died five years ago from a fentanyl od. He is at peace now no more pain. My father was 157cm as well. Although in life he never let that hold him back nor allowed insults to be thrown at him. Neither a surgery nor high academic skills will fix the remarks you take for your height but it is your character that determines it. The surgery exists around the world, we've seen people in the US getting this surgery as well. There's a lot of pressure in men into being tall in fear of being ridiculed for attributes they can't control. It's a bit sad when a person you're interested is five foot even but refuses to acknowledge you as a potential dating partner just because you were 2 inches away from 6 feet tall. After 20-30 years of getting the exact same critique from people, I honestly can't blame him at all. People in the comments keep commenting about how he needs self confidence, this, and that, but imagine the thing you were bullied for as a kid. Imagine that never got left behind and haunted you into your adult life? Into a life that's ever more online and harder than ever to escape from. Im also a short lad who gets jokingly asked if I'd get this procedure, and get called some awful stuff as allusions to my height. But that guy was dealing with the same struggle I do for longer than I've been alive. He's got literal decades of torment on me that when I consider my own emotions on the matter, I can see how that was where he ended up. I could sit here with measly 10+ years of bullying, and cast judgment, and say something like "I get made fun of but I just deal with it", but that doesn't address the fact this is a global intergenerational problem that we as a species need to get over. Hear hear from someone with above average height. It is crazy being so fussed with height. It means nothing. If every short person was made 6' tall or above tomorrow it would just change the bar for shortness. It is just a relative thing with no practical value in modern life. Apart from the risks this poor man took to stop the bullying (and no doubt rejection from women - often short themselves and well matched to his height) there have been even worse interventions. In Australia there was a belief that really short people should be given HGH to bring up their height and social status. Natural HGH was obtained from corpses and a lot got hit with a batch that gave them brain tumors. Hey for the record I worked with a guy who was quite short. When he got hit with the usual quip at a work function: "David stand on a chair so we can see you." He replied "No! You stand on a chair if you want to see me!" Classic and something that short people should file away.

The pain 9/10 is true. I was involved in a vehicular accident before which caused my tibia to have infections. My ilizarov is now 6 months with me. The first two months were so painful that everytime i adjust the screws (1mm a day) i can feel my skin being torn. My 3rd month was where i started walking without the aide of crutch or anything to hold on. Now in my 5-7th month i can now do basic exercises such as squats, knee strengthening etc. The challenging part of having this ilizarov is the inability to walk for a long time after the surgery. My doctors suspected me having knee contractions due to movement restraints before. Life with ilizarov is really not easy.

@@james2479 ​ ​ I know you didn’t ask me but do gather as much information as you can before you do the procedure, talk to people and be conscious of the risks. Even if it’s in accidents or for cosmetics the Ilizarov can cause problems. I’ve used a Ilizarov apparatus for broken bones but I wouldn’t put my feet on the floor for a long time, which I think is why seeing the man on the documentary walking after his operation gave me chills, but I understand those are probably different things with different instructions post-operative. Read about what you can do to increase your chance of not having any kind of complications and do them like your life depends on it. I know some cases of infections can happen to even the most careful post operative patient, but if you do the procedure take every step of the post operative procedure like religion. Like cleaning the wounds to reduce chance of infection, and follow your doctors orders on what you should and should not do. The dude on the documentary from what I saw tried to tightening the screws more than he should, so you’ll have to come in terms that you’ll have to follow everything strictly, and for a long time. Get a good doctor with lots of experience as well. The best you can. I say, do it, bro, if that’s what you want. But be careful with recovery please. If not, maybe cognitive behavioral therapy could help you also to accept yourself and be happy with who you are - but this also takes months, lots and lots of therapy and find one therapist that you bond with, which is always beneficial. Whatever you do, be safe dude. Wish you the best. Just really do everything you can and more with tips and how you can prevent infections and subsequent pain, and even other complications, but know that even if you do everything right you still can get one, but you’re lowering your risks considerably. But never to 0. Find a doctor who will instruct you how to rest your leg correctly, how much complete resting/walking you should do exactly, what you should and should not, on details. Cleaning routine, everything. One doctor that passes you confidence and seem to care about your well-being as they should (but not all do). Be safe.

My friend was born with a deformity that left his legs different lengths and he went through this same procedure in 3rd grade. I pushed him around in his wheelchair and we got to use the elevator. Then I started working due to work pressure I lost weight then again "The same people" started telling me I need to gain weight as I look like a stick. Recently a boy told me I need to gain weight as boys prefer "MASS" on the body. My entire life people have commented on my body, weight, color or something or other. This is not going to stop. This whole scenario made me realise nothing can make people around us happy we just need to be strong and happy and that will be our revenge on them. I still have insecurities but that doesn't mean I will let people get on my mind and ruin me. I am perfect and I am strong. I pray to god that Mukesh has a speedy recovery and lives happier life.

@@gothrough123mm No that's totally false. What do you mean by a medical condition? Thyroid disorder can slow down metabolism and the body consumes fewer calories for base operations. But this effect is not as bad as some fat people want others to believe. Let's say you are a fit person who eats 2400 calories/day. But suddenly you develop thyroid issues and due to your slower metabolism, your body requires only 2000 calories/day. That means you are eating 400 calories more each day. It will take you approximately 3 months to gain 5 kilograms with your otherwise "healthy eating". Note that a difference of 400 calories is on the upper end. Most people would have a small change in their metabolism rate. For a difference of 200 calories, it will take you 6 months to gain 5 kilograms of weight. It will take you "years" to become extremely obese. Approximately 3 years to gain 25 kilograms. Now my questions to you are..... Why did you allow yourself to become obese? We are talking about years. Why didn't you exercise and try to burn an extra 200 calories? Just 25 minutes of daily cycling at a moderate pace. This is an example of a person with a thyroid issue, who eats healthy, who eats only 200 calories more than a regular fit person. This is the ideal medical condition you are talking about. And this condition is manageable with just 25 minutes of daily cycling. Most obese people eat like pigs. They eat 2x or 3x more than the daily intake. And that's why they gain weight so quickly. A person eating 2000 calories more than required would need 4 hours of daily cycling at a moderate pace to burn those extra 2000 calories. Do you think that an obese person can ride a bicycle for 4 hours? No, because they eat like pigs, otherwise, Peter Sagan would have been a fat person. Those extra 2000 calories are stored as fat every single day. Who is to blame? oh YEAH....."I HAVE A MEDICAL CONDITION....." You said "Also, for some people due to medical conditions it's tough to change their weight. Doesn't matter how much they try......" Your comment is very ignorant. They just need to do 20 - 30 minutes of cycling. They just need to manage their daily intake of calories. Being 19 and 5’4 in the US, I can’t say it doesn’t bother me sometimes but these past few years I barely notice it anymore. Everything else in life has been amazing. I have perfect health, I hit the gym 4 days week, attend a flight school to become an airline pilot, have an amazing girlfriend, a loving and supportive family, a great group of friends, etc. I’ve learned to not care as much as I did when I was younger. I actually enjoy joking around about it now(not too self deprecating, that’s cringe and uncomfortable) because my friends will make equally funny and deep jokes about themselves. I’m at a point in life where no one disrespects me because of my height and anyone that does I find kinda cringey and tryhard. Usually the people that try to make fun of my height I judge too. They’re obese, high school drop outs, bitchless, jobless, homeless, druggies, etc. Anyone that disrespects me because of my height I naturally see them as insecure themselves. It’s hard to be insulted by someone who treats others like trash in general. The secret is to judge others before they judge you, lol

Way more than me and prob more than the all the students of our course combined. He was pretty self-confident tho. An amazing guy also. I‘m a woman with pectus excavatum, which basically means my ribs are kinda carved inward. Looks like a „hole“ in my chest. Was ridiculed a lot for my body and already had lots of bullying going on anyways. So I decided to try to fix it surgically. Got a metal bar put into my chest, fixated with screws on my ribs for three years. I could hear the metal bar every time I moved and feel it rubbing against my bones. Still feel it while writing this even though it‘s been taken out this year.

No matter where I go, I am always getting taunted by the people through these pathetic jokes and beatings that put you down. No matter what people say, we humans tend to judge people on the basis of their physical appearance, choose to talk to them on the basis of their physical appearance, form relationships on the basis of their physical appearance. And it's alright to have such standards, what's not alright is the hypocrisy people go around saying that things like height, skin, beauty, doesn't matter, while going on having a preference to select potential partners on the basis of all those factors. That and the gradual bullying and rejection that accumulates to a level that it leads to such painful procedures. Even the mundane things in life don't leave mocking you - not able to grab the hand supports hanging above on the trains and busses to stand amidst the crowd, not able to reach things, not able to get pass the physical exams for exams and what not. This is the hypocrisy of the world

Body positivity was created for people to appreciate their bodies even if it didn't fit the beauty standard body shape which was thin and straighter (most popular for models which changed people view of everyday woman (especially for curvy women with larger hips/broader shoulders etc). But it has evolved in good and bad ways. The pros, started including men, body shapes of all types, people with disabilities, skin conditions, and more. Cons, started promoting feeders, people make money off eating 12k calories on camera, people getting disability checks for eating to death, and started calling people who are obese, "curvy and thick" which completely diminished the whole point of the movement.
