When I was young - 18 - I had a 66 Belair which needed new tie rod ends. I didn't have a pickle fork; didn't know they existed, so tried to use big screwdrivers to separate them. I got frustrated to the point of getting out from underneath the car and bashing the drinkers side front fender with my big ball peen to the point the car was highly unsightly while screaming a string of profanities at the top of my lungs at God. Gee; I loved that old car and should have walked away.

"The important thing is you got it on the road and you're enjoying it." Well said sir. Bought my first C10 in Montana during Covid and drove her down to Texas with some pretty interesting hurdles along the way. Couple break downs, wrenching on highways and in O'Reillys parking lots later, we made it home to Austin. Your show inspired me to learn more and remain calm when things break and make it work however you got to to get her on the way. Thank you sir.

I have to say how absolutely awesome it is to FINALLY have someone who shows people the reality of working on cars with an actual budget. Because even roadkill and others have gotten to a point where the average feller and fellets budget just can't keep up. Thank you Derek and man it's awesome that you're teaching your boys how to be men and productive men. I was blown away how awesome he did sanding. 👏

For anyone planning on doing a at-home paint job, I can't stress enough. Buy a p100 cartridge mask, use gloves and ventilate. Most people doing at home jobs are still using solvent based products, guys use to drop dead in body shops from them. Doing budget builds is awesome, but never skip out when it comes to your health.

Off topic somewhat- Back in the 80's (before 2 stage), dad was the best "shade tree/mechanic/paint&body" guy around our small town. From painting plane 1 color to wrap around flames, fish scales, spaghetti stripes & basically anything custom. He started painting in the 60's learning from the Hot Rod magazine. He used to make dashboard panels from sheets of aluminum and swirl polish (using a drill, pencils and 100s of erasers) to achieve the fish scale design. (For the younger generations) - before led lights that beat with the music, Christmas lights could be used...except the farther away from the radio (no amplifier then, maybe a EQ or booster) the dimmer the lights would get haha. Engraving was done back then too but no dremel. It was a vibrating tool with 1 speed, so soft metal was the best. As a kid, dad started me out with sanding, then taping (basically anything he disliked to do haha). I think he told me he started out using "synthal paint". It was like water and it would take probably 10 coats haha. Then I remember another type, "emron" it would cure solid as a rock but a beautiful shine. When it came my turn to paint, (single stage) acrylic enamel was the go-to paint. Every coat after the 1st one needed to be right, so the final coat would shine like water with little orange peel. Plus, dad would top it off with a universal clear. My 1st car in high-school was a 1976 Nova 2 door hardtop, 350sb and a snorkel hood scoop. Dad asked me what kind of paint job I wanted. I said, "wrap around flames"...the whole time I was thinking, "dad's going to hook me up". Well he did, but AFTER I was shown how to tape off the flames by myself haha. Anyone that doesn't know, it's a ton of work involved using single stage paint....freehand the flames with stripping tape (no vinyl then) then taping off the car, then going back to scuffing the paint with a Scotch bright pad (getting close as possible to the tapes edge). Then he used 4 or 5 different colors. The nose started with white, little red, orange, yellow and the tips were blue. Afterwards, it was time to untape everything making sure you didn't pull up any paint from the job haha. Good times, me and the ole' man. He lived in the fast lane the 41 years he was here. Fast cars, cold beer (among other things) hot women and fighting on the weekends at the local bar room was his fun. I only really knew him for about 5 years, being him and moma divorced when I was 3 years old. I decided to move in with him and his girlfriend when I was 13. And when I was 19, he was stabbed (twice) in a fight. That was in 1992. It was a Sunday @ 6:30pm; he passed @ 9:15pm on the operating table. His liver had been punchered and they couldn't stop the bleeding...I'm 51 now but I remember it like it was yesterday.... Anywho, I'm taking a break today from remodeling the house (when I catch the woman of my dreams. I can't have a ugly home haha) and figured I'd share a little from the past. It makes a ole' guy feel good to think back sometimes. Everyone have a good one 1🤙🏻🤛🏻🇺🇸 (OH yeah, I forgot to mention: dad drove a 1969 SS Chevelle BB 396. Orange with double stripes on the hood...cowl scoops ofc, haha.)

Just wanted to say that your a very considerate brother. Wish my brother was like you. I’m 65 and been disabled since I turned forty after a stroke then a year later. I’ve got an old 99 Chevy Silverado with the 2000 body style and yesterday coming back from the doctor my oil pressure dropped below 20 psi and I guess I’ll be without away to go now since my wife maxed out the credit cards and ruined our credit. I just found that she just did it not long ago when a cop was at my door handing me a lean against my home. Now I have four leans. I guess I’ll sit and just watch the house fall apart and my truck rust back to dirt. A man doesn’t have a chance with this woman. Thanks again for such a great job on the paint job and giving it to your brother. I like all of your videos.
