Almost 6 months after the Euromaidan revolution that toppled former president Viktor Yanukovych, Ukrainians went to the polls to elect a new president in the midst of an anti-terror operation to wrestle Donetsk and Lugansk oblasts back under Kiev's control.
The separatists of the Donetsk People's Republic openly threatened the election in the region and had stormed a number of electoral commissions and intimidated electoral workers. In response the Ukrainian military alongside its paramilitary proxies have been working to secure towns across Donetsk to ensure a safe election took place.
On Sunday morning as voting started across the country, Donetsk itself saw no voting take place so VICE News headed out to Krasnoarmiisk where voting was able to take place, under the watchful eye of local loyal-to-Kiev police and another paramilitary force, the Dinipro Battalion.
Back in Donetsk, supporters of the DPR held a rally in the square, denouncing the election and the other DPR bugbears, NATO, the Kiev 'junta' and the US. Despite the threats, the election did take place in a few towns across the region and the fact that it took place at all seemingly threatens the advertised control of the region by the DPR.

"We are peaceful"........."tell the others not to take anyone alive" Somethings wrong with those statements coming from the same party

***** Im speaking only on what i quoted and what you're saying. You support the claim that they are peaceful but a man of the same party tells the soldiers to show no mercy. Thats an extreme contradiction
@Cambria358

***** That doesnt make it peaceful. Whether its right or wrong of them isnt in the issue, its the fact that being merciless is not peaceful whether they're doing it in defense or not, its not peaceful.

***** You're confusing taking the initiative to establish peace, as being peaceful actions. Them trying to kill Pro Ukrainians is being done to establish peace, but that does not make the action of killing without mercy in itself, "peaceful". It would've been different if someone had said "all we seek is peace" then it would make sense that they wish to achieve this through the elimination of their enemy, but to say "we ARE peaceful" contradicts their actions and motivations.

***** Wow, you are a funny one. Talk about double standards man! lol unbelievable! Here.... your idea of peaceful is quote "They are piecefull in a way that they are on defense. They did not invade other parts of country". (Peaceful btw) So to you, violence by defending is peaceful yes? So tell me... if the Ukrainian army kills separatists as you've mentioned in your previous post happened, isnt it peaceful because they too were defending their country and sovereignty? Its funny how you can tell others to apply the same standards when your logic is flawed

Stumbled back upon this absolute grade A fucking GEM of a series and am about to start it from number 1. I really hope this series gets preserved, or even put into a full DVD/collectors download/something format. This is hands down the best reporting I've ever seen in my life. So objective, real and raw it's unbelievable and I love how they talk to everyone. Soldiers from both sides, civilians, administrative people and everything in-between.

So Donetsk and Crimea can have a referendum, but Ukraine cannot have a presidential election? Just let them have their election, then you could say you supported democracy.

@kingvan7872 10 жыл бұрын
Nathan Callidor There are some who say the same thing about the referendums, both sides are accusing each other of illegitimate practices. However one thing is certain if the people of the east wish to join Russia, then we need to make the transition as peaceful as possible.

sergioccs74 I'm not saying the Ukrainian government is all in the right either, I'm just saying that having an elected government no matter if it's bought or not is better than the provisional government that wasn't even elected by the people to begin with. Also it's the "Pro-Ukrainians" decision on whether or not they wish to participate. The "DPR" and the Pro-Russians consider themselves separate, so I don't know why they're need to involve themselves with this. Same goes for the "Pro-Ukrainians", if the people of the east wish to go with Russia then you have to respect their choice. There's no need for bloodshed.

King Vangarh In the referendums the people massed around the pool sites...The same people ignored the presidential elections; meanwhile, the ukranian army bombs an airport; the private militia of akhmatov (donbass batallion and security guards from privatebank) "guard" the elections in few places. Obviously these elections means differently from a Kiev citizen than a southeastern citizen (iug-vostok)

Martin Barba You do make valid points. When a country is divided all sides are guilty of something. You have to forgive my bias, it's just humanity was so close to achieving peace. Ironically enough thinks of the Cold War, but now that balance has been off turn with the fall the Soviet Union. Ultimately I just don't want to see an entire nation fall apart, and its people divided. No country ever deserves this. We're still dealing with the demons of our previous civil war here in America.

sergioccs74 People can be overzealous with their opinions. However we all have the right to say what we wish no matter how intelligent or naiveté it may be. That right is yours, mine, and everyone's. I guess the best thing for people to do, is to do research on the cause they support and ultimately decide on Whether or not they are to follow it, because there are many people out there who will say anything in order to get what they want. History has shown us this many times. All one has to do was look to the "original fascists" of the 1930s and 1940s.

Side note, but important. In my opinion, this has to be the "best KZbin video series" here by Vice that has ever been made/presented since the birth of such technology as KZbin. Being that in almost real-time, daily videos of actual "history in the making" can be viewed by a guy from Detroit, Michigan, USA, me. And how I'm able to follow such information through these videos that it makes one feel so invested and informed on this "history in the making" that's happening on the other side of the world is incredible. It's a beautiful thing how far us humans have come. PS. Thank you Vice for making that happen.

***** Your history is the one the fallen Soviet Union children feed you. You do realize the USSR fell apart right? You do realize many countries broke off from the USSR cause it sucked right? And you are trying to promote the same failed ideas that the losers who died and were remembered disgracefully world wide. Much like Al Quaeda training camps for children, they tell you Russia Russia Russia, while using the USA's invented internet, on a USA's invented computer, on a USA's invented software, on a USA's phone line on a USA's Invented Server, on a USA's invented jack. Russia gave the world nothing from its heart and soul that resembles a phone or positive to humanity but images of antiquated WW2/Cold War ICBM's and fossil katyusha rocket trucks which are older then sin. Oh and electricity? USA. Light bulbs? USA What does Russia have? Ak-47, Draganov and stolen data for a nuclear weapon, Should I say oh thank you Russia for making the world a better place with millions of assault rifles? Tell me something that someone invented from Russia that didn't flee or defect to the United States that benefited the world half as good as Electricity, Light, Computers, or the Internet. Oh wait I found one, Sputnik, that's it. Other then that, lots of guns and bombs : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Russian_inventions

TheBlackB0X not to be a dick ( i dont like Russia) but just for the fun of it. USA also invented World Bank, neoliberalism, IMF, War on Drugs (really war on racialized ppl), wars for natural resources. It supported dictators in Chile and Argentina (1000's killed and tortured), invented many drugs such as ACID), Chicago school of business: shock doctrine. Slavery (more then 10 000 000 ppl were displaced from Africa. and last but not least America killed off millions of native Americans (so called Indians), and ironically build a human rights museums on the land of the natives... so yeah... wana talk inventions and innovations... yeah.. if you want to be pissed at Russia be pissed at its ruling class, not the oppressed nation. cuz they do not know what they are doing.. p.s. ever heard of Mendeleev, Korolev, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky? man beauty will save the world.. not all of them are war mongering, antisemitic internet trolls.

TheBlackB0X Nu blaaayt. I am not even going to get into the AC vs. DC Power argument with you as you clearly have no comprehension of the world outside of your Americanized filter fed perception. So where do I begin? How about the FUCKING Periodic Table of Elements, caterpillar tracks, electrically-powered railway wagons, the radio, the helicopter, solar cells, transformers (for electricity), television, the world’s first grain harvester, the first space station, first artificial satellite, first spacesuit, first dogs in space, first man/woman in space, first walk in space, and the first to the moon (10 years before the largely disputed USA's first appearance). Also, how could you forget that the Soviets won 9/10 of the total of battles that ensued between Germany and the Allies. Meanwhile you have the USA propagating their hate and war throughout the planet making them the most universally hated country in the world. I would hate to know where you get your history from if you are citing wikipedia. Not even elementary schoolers in America are allowed to use that as a source, what a fucking joke!

Max Nafa Your historical view is skewed, As the Spanish conquistadors and many others dominated slavery.(Of the 10 to 16 million Africans who survived the voyage to the New World, over one-third landed in Brazil and between 60 and 70 percent ended up in Brazil or the sugar colonies of the Caribbean. Only 6 percent arrived in what is now the United States. Yet by 1860, approximately two thirds of all New World slaves lived in the American South. For a long time it was widely assumed that southern slavery was harsher and crueler than slavery in Latin America, where the Catholic church insisted that slaves had a right to marry, to seek relief from a cruel master, and to purchase their freedom. Spanish and Portuguese colonists were thought to be less tainted by racial prejudice than North Americans and Latin American slavery was believed to be less subject to the pressures of a competitive capitalist economy.) Go learn history please. And currently... www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2013/10/17/this-map-shows-where-the-worlds-30-million-slaves-live-there-are-60000-in-the-u-s/

If you had an AK pointing at you from Donetsk people's republic "self defense forces" would you vote? Actually the turnout was amazing since all of Donetsk's voting stations were shut down by Russian backed Separatists. The average voter turnout for Ukraine from 1994-2007 was 68.13%. Ukraine still managed a 55% voter turnout, which was amazing in that it took such courage to even to show up to vote.

What i found kind of interesting is that throughout the reporting from the eastern Ukraine, some of the pro-russian militias seem to be not only coming from Russia, but - as briefly seen in this clip - from Chechnya. That's a bit surprising, considering chechnyan rebels success in fighting the Russians (they we're eventually "subdued" in the 2000s, but during the first Chechen war in the mid-1990s, they held out agains everything Russia threw against them), in beating the heck out of Russian ground troups. Now, those Chechnyans were quite inspired by their islamic faith, and that's probably why they could pull off what they did/do but...what are Chechen fighters doing in eastern Ukraine, fighting with PRO-Russian forces? I mean, the "regular" pro-Russian paramilitaries formed in Chechnya during the first and second Chechen wars were almost obliverated overnight by Chechen separatists, so...what camps are they're coming from here when they say they're "veterans from Chechnya"? The "tone" among those semi-independent republics in southern Russia is quite a bit ANTI-russian. It would be interesting to know more about where those came from, and if they're vetereans from the first or second Chechen wars; if they're actually Russians who fought in Chechnya (not "chechnyan nationals", so to speak). So far we havn't seen religion playing any part in the Ukraine, and i sincerely hope it doesn't get there. Worst-case scenario would be the Ukraine government having to fight an increasing number of Chechen veterans - they really shouldn't stand a chance. But, as said, Ukraine can hardly be compared with Chechnya in that respect. Regarding the "nazi"-discussion everyone's calling everyone here. Look at the websites of some of the parties that have been part of the interim Kiev governemt until the elections. Their party-logos ("nordic" "hammer"-symbols and "semi-swasticas of own design" etc embedded in Ukraine's colors, together with their very extreme nationalist party manifestos (not exactly the maidan pro-EU message, even if they ofcourse were a part of that movement toothough they were a large part of that) doesn't bother anyone? I'm not saying the Kiev interim government have been a fascist one, but this is the kind of opportunity when fascist and ultra right-wing parties flourishes. And the extreme right has always been very strong in parts of the Ukraine (much more so than in other former Russian sattelite republics) ever since it declared itself independent when the USSR fell apart.

The second time they tortured his Rebel translator and friend in front of him and threatened to kill him if he ever comes back. We used to be friends but he just cannot tolerate anything even remotely Ukrainian. And I happen to be a moderate sane Ukrainian nationalist. They turned a man who loved and cherished everything Ukrainian into someone who loathes everything about it. I repeat- there are two sides to a civil war and there are no heroes and no Boy Scouts.

Just to clarify one point mentioned in this clip at 05:32. I saw the video of the two people shot on the pseudo-referndum day, May 11. Those were clearly NOT Ukrainian forces, first of all, because they were not in uniform, some were in half-camo with t-shirts and masks. Secondly, whoever they were, they were not directly shooting at anybody, just firing warning shots into the air but one man apparently shot into the ground, which ricocheted and killed someone standing by, because the victim was shot in the back of the nek, although he was facing the men with guns. A second man was shot in the leg because he tried to wrest the gun from one of those men and had a knife in his other hand.

It's amazing how the so called "rebels" just a few weeks into their rebellion somehow already all had perfectly matching uniforms, and the same guns, and armored personel carriers. None of those guys are from the Donetsk. The one even says he is from Chechnya. This is a Russian invasion.

Perfectly matching uniforms? Doubt. We saw a blend of Russian uniforms, Ukrainian army surplus, everyone's favourite American camouflage, and stuff you'd order from China

Well done VICE. It is clear how you are framing this situation and for who but by acknowledging that there is more than one voice you bring legitimacy to your reports. You are learning, as witnessed by the dropping of the term ''pro-Russian separatists''. Subtle means are what is required of you.

What of their coined term is incorrect? These people want to seperate and join russia. Dumbass.

Is that why they voted to become an independent Republic? No mention of Russia. You believe they have picked up arms purely and solely for the benefit of Russia? Even when VICE drop the term (if it was an appropriate term why would they?) you have heard it so many times previously it doesn't matter whether it's true or it isn't. The seed has already been sown. What is so difficult to understand? You have validated my point though about them learning and using their platform more effectively so thanks for that, I guess. I won't return the insult. It's not needed. Although you do appear to need someone to point out the obvious to you so that could change.

There were like 10 polling stations opened which created the image of mass vote....yes, some people did vote, but they were like 10%,20% max.... and holding a a referendum while armed thugs are roaming around doesn't sound very legitimate.

lexazver I know it's saneless to start KZbin comments quarrel, but I can't help it to ask whether it is legitimate to start president elections while armed thugs are roamig around south-eastern part of the country or not. Thanks
