For over a century, Kabwe city in Zambia has suffered severe lead pollution from a former mine, poisoning generations. More than half of the kids here have lead levels in their blood over 20x more than kids in Flint, Michigan at the height of its water crisis. 28 years after the mine's closure, the problem is far from being solved.

Being born and raised in Kabwe, I can attest to the fact that this issue of lead exposure has been an ongoing crisis and majority of the everyday people are not even aware of the contamination through the air they breathe or the water they drink and the devastating effects lead poisoning has on them and their children. Almost 30 years since the closure of the mine little or no effort has been made to remedy this huge problem.The deliberate cover up of the extent of lead poisoning, the lack of proper health care to tackle this issue and inaction and incapability by the people responsible for this, is just utterly wrong and immoral. Thank you VICE for bringing awareness to this issue because URGENT measures need to be put in place by the government and other supporting organizations to mitigate these effects.

@@Aday442 It happens all over the world. In my own state they were trying to mine copper for decades and the mine was finally purchased back by the local tribe to prevent the miners from polluting one of the last pristine rivers in our state, and the reservation it went through. It was decades of court cases and the people won, except a couple years ago another company was slant drilling for sulfur just a few miles away! Makes me angry that they can do that without permits and everyone wants to protect that river!

It blows my mind how Africa is so rich in natural resources but yet the ordinary people there NEVER benefit from this, in fact they always seem to pay the highest price (their health, their children’s health, poverty, etc..) for rich people to become more rich while they suffer. It’s very pronounced in Africa and many people there have suffered for a huge amount of time so others can have yet more money. This is actually happening all over the world to all us ordinary people no matter how good one thinks they have it. Obviously many people have it better if not living in super toxic environment or poverty or not having the diseases but w that said all the world governments are poisoning all of the people on purpose and doing straight up psychopathic things to the everyday ordinary people all so they can have more money and more power. It makes my blood boil and my heart break, especially when I see people suffering like this and it’s always the same thing no matter where, what or who……everyday people suffering, often in cruel and unspeakable ways, so that the mega rich and powerful and elite can have yet more. I hope I live to see the day that they pay for what they’ve done and us the people take back what has always been ours to begin with. Anyways I wish everyone the highest love and blessings….

its called "capitalism", not compassion. dont forget, someone from the area sold the mining company on the idea. no one is wandering around in africa and "stumbling" onto these mining discoveries. someone brought the geological information to the attention of the mining company. africa and other nations have been selling their people for centuries. africa , to this day continue to exploit young children as slave laborers to mine toxic elements for their personal benefit. the problem can never be corrected until responsibility is taken.

The mining companies should be held responsible and liable. That's when these types of things will stop. It's the same story over and over. Some company comes in, exploits resources, harms the area and people. They leave with the profit, destroying the place and land. If these companies start to be legally and financially responsible, I think this will make a big difference.

its not the mining companies that are to blame, it is the local officials, politicians, and elders. mining companies are only allowed to mine the area because of allowances given by the government. no one complained when they were making money, but now complain because they have been left with toxic levels of heavy metals. its not the mining companies blame, but the local officials. if they were really so concerned about their people, they wouldnt allow it to happen to begin with. capitalists will always make "profit".

As Africans we love to externalize our problems, and not take responsibility. It's the colonialist; it's the mining company; it's the Chinese; it's the Indians; hell we even blame the devil. But truly speaking all these people are everywhere else in the World. And they don't wreak the havoc they do here. The problem is us, our leadership out ethos.

The reporter says , "According to the Western media, Kabwe is the most polluted city in the entire world" He replies "Well I am not privy to the parameters that where used to do the ranking because If you are talking about Chernobyl vs lead poisoning in Kabwe; how do you put radiation pollution and lead pollution in the same checklist" 🤣😂 lol i almost choked on my beverage when i heard that😅
@_sunfish
@_sunfish 2 жыл бұрын
I think the ranking is about health effects of the pollutions, in that regard it can be compared, and lead exposure there is much more devastating than tchernobyl radiation exposition, actually tchernobyl now isn't very radioactive even in the closer range to the facility, unless you are both that close and move the soil and create soil dust that you can inhale. The further ranges don't pose real threat and actually nature and wildlife is thriving there. Therefore the comment by Gideon Ndalama was pure stupid, but then again it is known that africa isn't the land of smart and problem solving people.

“How do you out radiation poisoning and lead poisoning on the same checklist?” yeah, got quiet real fast huh
@TheBrandonDestiny
@TheBrandonDestiny 2 жыл бұрын
That, I’d say, is an argument from ignorance. That he doesn’t see the ability to compare the two forms of poisoning does not mean the premise (that the city is supremely toxic) is not true. One can simply collapse toxicity into its most observable unit - human health - by using official cause of death indications, and even otherwise morbidities from living patients, to get a general sense of the area’s state of health which, if construed along a time domain, can allow for a chronological per capita view of impacts deriving from both types of poisoning. It’s not by any means declarative (correlation doesn’t imply causation) but an association should - at least - rise to the standard of legislative action and punitive damages. Fallacies are a very easy, but hardly intuitive, way of dismissing intellectual rigor.

Imagine sueing a company which hasn't operated in 46 years and which was taken over by zambia for well over 20 years for your child which isn't even as old as the time that Zambia had control over the facility and has been shut down longer than it even ran the facility. Now I ain't saying that Anglo-American is good or doesn't deserve heat for what they did ... but ya this isn't in any way shape or form legally sound lol.

@@JamesWilliams-jf3hd Just because you happen to live in an area with natural resources, that doesn't mean they belong to your community or even to the state that sits ontop of them. They couldn't even make use of them since they didn't have the technology to properly process them without western help. That said, I do actually think that whatever environmental damage was done by these corporations should be compensated and fixed as much as possible. That is indeed a gross violation of human and environmental responsibility and accountability. The companies should be forced, if still existing, to pay for the cleanup for the damages that they have caused. But like I said, that's going to be a hard sell legally because Zambia itself continued the plant for anothre 20 years under practically the same circumstances. In the end they are just as responsible by that point and are technically responsible for their fair share of the cleanup. It's a giant mess really. Both legally as well as socially.
