My male syrian who died from old age was very verbal... He would make different noises for communicating what he wanted/felt... I never experienced this with the females, but one of them had a cute way of shaking from excitement if I leaned over to her box and talked very friendly to her ❤❤❤

I've heard my hamsters make a stressed out squeaking noise before (I heard my hamster make a loud crying squeak sound in her sleep once too) and they have another gentle squeaking/chirping/clicking noise that some hamsters will make when they find food, are rolling in sand or digging around and they seem to be enjoying themselves

I got a hamster named coco, made her the linmon cage (well over 450 sq inch floor space) she had a 10 inch wheel, different substrates, hideouts, she had paper bedding under which she could comfortably burrow and nest. I let her free roam every night in quite a big room. She exhibited signs of unhappiness despite all this, was constantly cage pacing and wanting to get out. Theres only so much time i can let her free roam before i let her back in her cage, even i have to sleep at some point. And i live in india so its not easy to acquire accessories for hamsters at all. However eventually the stress got to her and she passed today because of wet tail. She was a year and a half old. I wanted to educate some and let them know that sometimes a hamster simply does not want to be caged, even when i let her free roam in the room she'd try to climb the walls! I have another hamster who is very happy in her cage. However i am extremely disheartened that in spite of my best efforts i wasnt able to save Coco but i accept the fact that there was nothing more i could do and this wont discourage me from adopting more hamsters in the future.

my adopted hamster is the same way. you honestly described it perfectly, my male syrian hamster went from the tiny tales castle cage, to a 70gal bin, to finally a 25in by 50in (the biggest cage I could find online) and he still cage paces, over grooms himself, and chews on the side ventilation holes. No matter how much he gets free roam time, no matter how many expensive supplies i buy, no matter how much bedding he has, he still expresses stress behavior. I feel like im missing something or doing something wrong. I’m really trying my best to make him happy. although when I adopted him he came with his old tiny tales cage. the plastic inside was all chewed up and the bars were rusted and full if bite marks. I don’t know how long he had to endure that but he probably spent a long of time trying to escape. Sometimes I theorize that because of the tiny living space and lack of enrichment, he spent most of his time trying to escape, now he’s obsessed with it. It was really the only thing he knew. but on the bright side, I’m starting to see him express normal hamster behavior more and more. hes a bright friendly little guy and loves attention and being talked to. he perked up a lot since I got him. He had a bald spot behind his head that’s slowly growing back. I’m just happy to let him experience a better life. He can now be a hamster as much as a captive hamster can be. sorry this is so long I love my baby

@@spiderinsidecomputer I guess some hamsters just like some people are never happy no matter how many good things they have in their lives, they will always want more and more. Also no matter how big a cage you put them in, at the end of the day it's a closed place so it seems logical to me that they want to escape.

Hamsters a lot smarter than some people think. I have had a lot o hamsters, and my most recently passed hamster was so spoiled. He learned how to tell us when he wanted the lights to be turned off. He would wake up at 6PM, and I lived in a studio so the light would be on. After working on a few things, the would stare at me and then lightly bit the bars to make noice if i didnt notice him. That was my signal to turn of the lights. As soon as I did that, he stopped biting the bars and off he went running on his wheel. (Note he was not CHEWING like you see in thee videos online. He would bite a couple of times and stop to wait for me to notice.)

Great video…full of examples of specific hamster behaviors…even clever escapes 😬 Admittedly I was selfishly wondering if there are any behaviors that “show” your hamster is maybe not “loves you” but feels safe/content. Our elderly Syrian loves to come out at night from his enclosure & sit in his blanket on our lap. He grooms, eats food we hand feed, and “seems to love” having his head/behind his ears stroked (he’ll close his eyes and drift off to sleep until you stop, then he wakes back up).

could you make a video all about sprays if you know about them? i’ve been looking up stuff online about them but it’s hard to find a place that shows what spray is what and what they do and how many to give different kinds of hamsters. i love your videos they’ve helped so many 🩷
@daniellew.8109 Жыл бұрын
It's basically grains or seeds still on their stems. They provide enrichment because the hamster has to put work into getting the food rather than it being placed in a bowl. They're more common to see in the bird section of pet stores. I give my hamsters millet sprays because they are easy to find where I live. I've offered oat sprays as well, and flax is a popular one. Like with most hamster treats, it's best to give a variety to see what they like, but not over do it because you want them to have a balanced diet. Offering fresh sprays once a week is usually enough.

So I bought a winter white dwarf hamster a day ago, and I've been doing a lot of research on to how to enrich my hamster's life. I bought the cheapest cage I could get for a decent size as I was out with my mom and my parents can be a little strict. Especially when it comes to prices. It's two stories, and both are 14 inches by 9 inches, which makes a grand total of 252 square inches, which I know doesn't reach the 450 minimum. He does have another little room though that is 4 inches by 4. To compensate, I bought him a tunnel with yellow chewable (non-toxic) material so he can make a nest. He seems to really like it and even brought some of his food into it! I bought him other chewable toys and branches, he even has an 8 inch wheel which he likes to use. And because I know they like to burrow, I made him a bit more than 4 inches of bedding. I also put some treats in there so he can scavenge. He has food, two water sources, a bowl and the classic water dispenser, but he has preferred the water dispenser. Other than that, I also bought this ball so I take him out of the cage (he climbs into my hand or into a cup) and I place him in and let him walk around my room with my door closed. I have dogs as well, and he seems really unbothered and calm about them. Of course, I know to never have my dogs alone with my hamster nor have them be too close. Overall, he was a little stressed the first night but with some adjustments that I made (the current state that my cage is in) he's been calm and hasn't tried to climb walls or bite them at all. He seemed to really enjoy the burrowing, the wheel, and the tunnel. As well as the ball. He seems generally happy, but I'm afraid that long term he may become bored. I wanted to buy him a sand box so he can clean himself, and some things to climb, as well as buying little seeds and whatnot and spreading them around so he can scavenge some more, but I am afraid it'll be too crammed. OVERALL, he seems happy for now and he's really nice (he cleans himself when he's in my hands so I think that's a good sign?) but Im scared he'll get bored long term. I want to invest in a bigger cage, preferably a glass one but I don't think I can do 25 inches by 18 inches. I measured my area, and my desk can only fit 25 inches by 16 inches. So I wasn't sure if that would be ok instead of the 18 inches. Additionally, money is somewhat a little tight right now with my parents, and having a minimum wage job that pays 15.5 dollars an hour makes it so investing into cages may take a while. So I was wondering if you had any specific cages on the cheaper side, or recommendations on where I can find some cheaper ones with the previous requirements mentioned. I also wanted to know if 25 inches by 16 inches is still too small. I don't really have space anywhere else in my room or house.

One of my hamsters years ago, a female named Ouida (weed-ah, I know, a pothead name) used to constantly escape almost every night, but only to end up climbing up the bed comforter to cuddle up beside us in bed. After dealing with it for a few weeks, we finally stopped immediately putting her back in the cage, and would just let her stay outside the cage at night because it was the bedroom, so she really didn't have any place to actually hide, just under the bed, night stand, or dresser, but she would usually just wander around under, and near our bed, and in the morning we'd usually wake up to her hanging out above our heads crawling from pillow to pillow waiting to be put back in the cage so she could eat (which is what she would do immediately after being put back in her cage). I had a whole bunch of hamsters back in the day. So many that even though I cared about them, I had too many for me to really get attached to them. But Ouida was one of the special ones. I actually miss her quite a bit. The poor thing developed a tumor on her side that kept getting larger and larger over the course of several weeks. At the time she was about two and a half years old which would be nearing the end of a hamster's life, so there wasn't really anything the vet could do for her. We knew eventually she was going to die, and the day that it happened we more or less knew it was coming, but we still cried. Out of all the hamsters, gerbils, and Siberian dwarfs I ever had, she was the ONLY one I can truly say was a great pet. Typically hamsters are kinda assholes. They prefer solitude, they typically don't enjoy hanging out with, or even being held by anyone, so they tend to constantly try to climb out of, or away from you as you hold them. Very seldom do they simply "chill" when you hold them. And putting them in those plastic balls for them to run around the house and other places is the only way you can leave them unsupervised outside their cage.

I’m also able to include dig boxes, 8-9” wheels (they’re dwarves), branches, tunnels, multichamber hides, & other smaller hides. I also have a 200 qt & 160 qt bin cages And finally, for my Syrian, I have a Pawhut that is a tiny bit smaller than 48x24”!!! I’m SOOOOO thankful for your videos. They truly deserve WAY MORE views.

Hi Victoria ! I’ve been watching you since at least 2021 when I got my first hamster thinking back now, I remember getting my first hamster for Christmas I got one and my parents gave me one of those pink petsmart hamster cages. At the time I didn’t know anything wrong with it, that hamster would bite every time you tried to feed it and give it water and you could never touch it with getting bitten. Then in 2022 I got another hamster trying to use a bin cage. Turns out, it was also too small, however it was larger than the other and the hamster lasted for about a year and socialized a pretty good bit. This year currently 2023 I’ve been watching your videos extra hard and doing research on hamsters. I’ve found out what I’ve been doing wrong and I’m saving up a big budget to supply everything needed for my little hamster I’ll be getting now. It’s crazy to think about how much I messed up with those little hamsters in the past. However moving forward I hope to give the hamsters the best life they could ever have, but it’s all thanks to you for letting us know how to take care of our hamsters and your videos are amazing. Thank you !! ❤ (edited: what food diet would you recommend for a dwarf hamster ?? )

Hello V.R! I am a huge fan of your channel, watched quite all of the vids you uploaded. I post a comment if we can get valuable advice regarding our golden hamster. She is healthy, 160g, 9 months old female hamster. We are providing enough food, clean water and even we crafted big cage especially made for her. Width is 120, depth 55, Height 60 cm. Even after giving her bigger cage and we let her free roam every day, still she wants to get out of the cage and bite the metal bar of the wheel. We thought we did enough because we are also giving various kinds of food including vegetables and fruits even. Enrichment we can give additionally is just some toys that she can enjoy playing - which we already provided before but not satisfied at all. Do you think we still need to try and discover harder? Now we are running out of ideas how to make her busy in her nest. Can you give us an advice? Thanks very much 🫶

Hi 👋🏻 Victoria , does attributing the video clips you have help prevent copyright strikes? Can you show a clip without the attribution? Or risk copyright strike?

Hello, Ive been watching your videos a lot and I am new to hamster caring. I am planning to rebuild my enclosure to natural as much as possible. My plan is to cover the entire cage with coco peat. Will it hold their tunnel? Your answer will be much appreciated and will help my hamster live a happy life! Thank you!❤

Hello victoria! So my hamster is sleeping, eating and using the running wheel. If he uses the wheel, does it still mean hes bored? Bc im just very overprotective of my hamster.

Have you had any hamsters that will shake like a dog that's drying off when wet? My friend's hamster is fairly elderly but it's the first time I noticed she was shaking as much
@VictoriaRaechel Жыл бұрын
Usually when they go in their sand bath they will.

Hi Victoria, I hope u read this because I need advice asap, my friend just got a hamster from a pet store and got a cage with 360 inches of floorspace, she told me she was gonna get it yesterday and the moment I saw the text I sent some of ur videos to her knowing that she knew nothing about proper hamster care and hoping that she would consider buying the hamster later and getting a big cage for it first, but she's a very impatient person and didn't bother watching it, me having a hamster myself, I tried to give another of advise to her, I tried everything I can but she just wouldn't listen, and her mom won't let her get a proper sized cage anyway....so Idk what I should do anymore because she won't listen to anything I try to explain to her, I feel really bad for her hamster because I'm just so tired of seeing hamsters being mistreated and I blame myself because this time I could have helped her poor hammy😔

I’m so sad and stressed because my dad is saying there small so they need a small cage but i watch your vids so I know but my hamster is showing all these signs and my dad is going to get a bin cage so I’m hoping it’s the right size the reason I’m stressed is because I don’t want my hamster to have the unhappy life I see in others

The truth is, I was like all those people who take bad care of my hamster, that is, I bought it small cages, or really, and now I want to have one and give it a better life. Greetings from Chile 💖💖

IM TRYING SO HARD TO CONVINCE MY MOM OUR HAMSTER NEEDS MORE! At least we have a cage that’s a perfect size and at lest 7in of bedding. When I made it 7in she actually burrowed! It made me smile. (I’m currently figuring out how to add more without buying more bc my mom probably won’t) and I wanna get sprays and other accessories. My hamsters currently has a sand bath a few hides a wheel thats 7in wide (I wanna get a bigger one my mom just won’t) food, water and I scatter food around her cage often and change scoop her poo and change her sand bath. At least no more adoptions from pet stores! (Phew 😅)

Hey Victoria! I have a Syrian hammy in a 1000sq inch enclosure. His name is Freddy and he has a big 12 inch wheel, a sand bath, dirt digging box, chewing toys etc. I was wondering if you had any tips that I could add to his enclosure? He recently had started bar biting and it’s stressing me out but I’m not sure what things to add that could stop the behavior and keep him busy. I started to let him free roam around my room before I sleep but as soon as he’s back in his enclosure he just seems bored again.
@Leah-kims Жыл бұрын
Hi, im obviously not Victoria but I wanted to try help, if you haven’t added any natural sprays (like any of these - flax, millet, oat wheat, sorghum, amaranth and more) I would suggest to add those, I’m not sure what his bedding is like but make sure it’s at least 8 inches deep with a safe bedding (aspen, paper based) so that he can burrow for fun! Victoria has showed in some videos how to make DIY hamster boredom breakers that you could try. And if his food isn’t scattered around the cage already you could try doing that as it is a good way for the to hunt around the cage for their food mix. Hope this helps :)

@@Leah-kims hi! Thank you. I'm great full for any help I can get. The thing is, I tried all of that :( but I still can't keep him busy at night. He just finishes the boredom breakers, looks for his food then gets bored again even with chew toys tunnels and the other stuff I have for him.

@@Leah-kims I do have a good amount of bedding aswell but he dosent really create tunnels. He just chooses to make one tunnel to make a nest

@@surreal.canines That’s weird, I’ll try to think of more things but I’ll have to reply tomorrow if i can think of any. Apparently most Syrians always want more so that could be the case.

I'm lucky enough that I can offer my hamster an entire room to run around loose 24/7. My house is a ranch originally built in the 1950's, with hardwood floors. I keep my hamster in a spare bedroom, which I use as a storage room. I block the doorway of the room with a 1 ft high wood board. My hamster has a Savic Hamster Heaven Metro cage, which I always leave open. I keep the wheel and the flying saucer in the cage. Hamster always returns to the cage by dawn. She also returns to the cage to use the bathroom, so my floors stay clean. I do not provide much for enrichment, though. In the past, I've placed toys and boxes throughout the room, but my hamster never explores them. They are just obstacles she avoids. Running around the room and hiding under the futon is apparently plenty of fun. So, if you have enough space that you can give your hamster their own room, or if you can block off a section of room, I highly recommend it. My hamster is always in a good mood and very happy, and never displays any stereotypical behavior.

I have a serious question and im having a crisis, and here is why. My sister got her hamster Hamuel on november 10th 2021 at petsmart and they said the hammy had already been there for about a year, and so we got hamuel and have had hamuel ever sense and he has been seemingly healthy. But Two nights ago i gave hamuel a spinach leaf and my sister yelled at me for giving hammy the whole leaf but i told her it was fine because the internet said spinach is good for hammys and a leaf or two is fine or about a teaspoon so then she was fine but told me hammy better not get wetail and die because of it. Well the next night she said hamuel had poop on him self and his eyes were watery and he was lethargic and he ended up dying and im pretty sure my sister blames me for giving him the spinach leaf. And i dont know if its really my fault or if it was just a huge coincidence and maybe it was just his time because he has been alive for a rather long time and i am just feeling awful and wondering if its really my fault…

My hamstwr still bar bites (she has the savic plaza ) she has 10 different sprays, scatterfed, has a multichamber , a few other hides. ,a terracotta pot, obviously sand , 10 inches of bedding in about a 3rd of her cage and also has cork logs , cork bark , Willow tunnels and those cardboard tubes that are big enough for her , I've done about 1000 hours of research and I change up her enclosure around once a month , any advice I will. Take to help her

Hi, I have a really shy hamster and I've had him for almost 3 months, but he is still quite scared of me. He is active and has lots of enrichment, but whenever I'm around he stays in his hideout. I was wondering if you know if he is just shy, or is he feeling bored or stressed? Also I just wanted to say your videos have benifeted my hamster so much!
@MimiMangetsu Жыл бұрын
Sounds like he is just shy. Try to get your smell on some toilet paper and shred that in the cage. Also just talk to him and give treats. You don't have to touch him at first, just get him used to your hand being in the cage :) And don't worry if he is jumpy, just be confident and no sudden movements!
