I strongly agree. My friends are gamers, and I'm currently a film major. I've always judged films as films. When I said Mario was just a mediocre film, and they said the same thing, "it's Mario. It's not gonna be deep. " My response was,"Yeah, but I expected a film. Plus, there are other animated films that do what this film's premise does, but better." Maybe the online discourse effected the way I viewed the film. I found both sides insufferable. I understand both sides, but I'm in my own lane.

Well said. All that matters to most of these fans is that they watch a "faithful" adaptation of the IP, instead of actually *adapting* that IP to work on its own as a strong cinematic narrative. My experience is almost completely different. The majority of the bad ones are mostly big theater Hollywood releases. Meanwhile there are still alot of amazing ones out there, even before Tlou. Some of my favorites are: Detention 2019, Ace Attorney 2012, Professor Layton & the eternal Diva, Street fighter 2 1994, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Fate shows (0 & Unlimited blade works), Fsn: Heaven's feel trilogy, Shenmue, Street fighter V2 show, Arcane, Mkl: Scorpion's revenge, Castlevania, Werewolves within & Gangs of London. There's alot more out there.

I think the true issue is that we've seen better. What these films did, the fans have made better. Any movies that are made, we've seen fan animations that are way funnier and more interesting. I'd even argue FlashGitz's Mario animation is more cohesive than the actual movie. Voice acting? Juno Songs already outdid Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Jack Black, and Keegan Michael-Key just by singing as those characters. I'd argue Juno's impressions are nigh-unmatchable. The only guy who can match Juno as Bowser is Darby Cupit. Granted, some animations and fan content are HEAVILY diverged from their sources, but they never failed to be interesting and fun while also being cohesive and faithful. Overall, movies have to be better than what the fans made, even if on a relative scale.

tbh i could honestly get behind the sonic movie, even as someone that didn't care about the franchise beforehand, bc it had like, an actual plot with a theme, even if it was pretty simple and surface level, plus i liked the casting by contrast, i was one of mario's most passionate fans in my childhood, and i was heavily disappointed by the movie for basically being a corporate vehicle with nothing going for it besides "look at le funee referens on the skrin", and the controversy made it even worse but yeah, i do agree on how the bar's so low that anything better than dogshit will be treated as the second coming of christ, and even might have been guilty of participating in another sonic 2 controversy, and looking back i do regret my actions back then and wish to become better now also you're so based for referencing sophia lillis' nancy drew at 3:58

It’s like, I know many indie games that would be super interesting to turn into a movie, but for the big triple A properties… I‘ve never finished Titanfall 2 but BT saying “I’m not losing another pilot” is a moment that NEEDS to be seen on the big screen live action. If a tiny moment like that can inspire me from a SHOOTER whose creators just wanted to make “Gundams but not deep” (not that shooters can’t be art but some of them are just toys especially when people only care about the multiplayer) THEN WHAT ABOUT THE GAMES WHERE THE STORY IS THE FOCUS AND IT’S FUCKING AMAZING. What about games that create a huge lore like League of Legends!? Arcane has already proven that stuff is PRIME source material! They’re not all digital toys people! really good video, however id like to point out a couple things the defensiveness of those fans, while very annoying and yes makes them terrible advocates, may come from the other side you didnt mention, which is the side of the fanbase that gatekeeps those fans who are chill and dont do anything wrong and tell them they're stupid or bootlickers of a company for saying the movie you think is mediocre in your opinion, good this causes those fans to feel like they need to be defensive in order to get the point across that they aren't what they're being considered, and while yes everyone can just brush off a stranger on the internets opinion, everyone's brain works in many MANY different ways, and therefore the person who called mario, sonic, or detective pikachu good may actually not have been defensive and very chill until they were insulted, always better to look at both sides to understand the bigger picture obviously however, i can very clearly tell you arent implying no one can find these movies good, that would be a huge reach on my part, so dont think im saying you fall under the "this fan is stupid for praising the mario movie" but just keep in mind someone saying mario movie had beautiful shots was dogged on and told to watch more movies, the other side is very much just as vicious, and that's the scary part of online discourse there's always such a thing as sides, you're either incredibly dismissive of criticism and claim the IP as a loyal brand defender, or you're so cynical that you feel the need to assume that just because someone thought higher of a film than you did, that automatically somehow makes the person dumb and not a true fan because the movie is believed to be of "mediocre quality" again no attack towards you and your video was really good! just providing some further insight

I agree to a certain extent, but the truth is that I prefer the previous state of video game movies. I prefer street fighter or the old mario bros, and not in an elitist sense ("secretly they are great gems of cinema" or some such nonsense). I just think these are movies that took certain risks, and failed. The current situation seems to be playing it safe, repeating it thousands of times. Maybe that's why (and my complete emotional detachment from brands) is that I find them bland, indisputably "correct". Films that do nothing but exist: they are correctly written, correctly filmed... but they leave me absolutely nothing, neither during nor after.

I prefer a good safe movie that is fun and entertaining from start to finish, to one that is not faithful to the source material and pretends to be more than what it really is and failing miserably in the attempt.

Something you should keep in mind when looking ar people's reactions to these films is the stories found in their respective source materials. With pokemon there's a 50/50 chance a story will be memorable or underwhelming, outside of a sub series mario stories are lacking in depth by desing, and when the first sonic movie came out the stories for the games weren't being well received even by long time fans. So when asking the question of why certain fans can be so defensive of these films, the answer you should consider is that the quality of writting found in said movies are exactly what several fans expected and wanted.

So my issue with these movies. Btw ive only actually seen the detective pikachu one so ill start there. I dont like the idea of people calling this the first pokemon movie. Its not. Pokemon has an anime thats almost as old as the games themselves and is still running. The anime has some incredible movies to go with it too. Detective pikachu is a decent movie about the shittiest spinoff game in the series. And this is coming from a fan of the property. I still buy and enjoy every mainline game. I own many of the spinoffs and love em. I also collect the cards and watched the anime as a kid. And remember seeing the first movie in theatres and crying. Pokemon as a whole means a lot to me and has been a huge part of my life. The detective pikachu movie was ok. It was funny and the pokemon themselves i think looked phenomenal. The story was ok. And thats fine. As for mario and sonic. Ive heard good things. Im not a fan of sonic. I grew up in a nintendo home. So im more familiar with mario. But neither game is really rich in lore or story. So i do find it silly to expect masterpieces out of these movies. They are silly blockbusters for children to like at in awe. I hope someday some good directors can take some more story heavy games and make some incredible movies out of them like i know can be posible with the right material. There are so many games out there that are essentially playable movies already. Those are the ones that need this. Not sonic and mario.

I get the point of the video, saying our personal attachments or feelings to whatever particular brands shouldn't stop us from engaging with media critically. And that we could be better at articulate our thoughts rather than dismiss any attempts to have a deeper conversation. I get this as a universal principle to live by, but simultaneously I also don't fault ppl for sometimes just wanna turn their brains off and enjoy stuff, especially when it comes to children's media/their childhood memories. And yes there's always gonna be ppl being a dick insisting if sth was never meant to be taken seriously then its never ought to be, but that's just the internet, and the implied absolute prioritization of one approach over another just seems to be missing nuance in this case. Overall I still enjoyed the video and get sth out of it so kudos nonetheless. Can't wait for the FNAF review.

I fear the Mario will become the norm in term of video game adaptation in Hollywood, with everyone putting out low effort movies of which only feat is to rub the viewer with very obvious and very obnoxious Easter eggs and references (especially with Mario Movie's financial success). People can say whatever they want about the MCU , but they did a far better job at introducing the audience to the characters than neither Mario or FNAF ever tried to . I didn't need to read every issue of every Thor comics in order to know who is and what he's about , I didn't need to know the "lore" of Guardians of the Galaxy in order to be invested ; but it seems that in order to enjoy the Mario movie , I did .

Superhero movies and comic book readers are guilty of this too. While narration isn't much of an issue since comic books are story driven by default, execution is still an issue with some of these movies. Gamers and comic book readers I think are similar in that they enjoy things too much or take fictional narratives a bit too seriously than they really should. Then you just have toxic fans who either spread toxic negativity where they have forced hate on good things or in this case toxic positivity where they don't welcome criticism or room for improvement. I think the issue is that gamers when they see a faithful movie on something that not many others are familiar with they don't acknowledge that not everyone plays video games or are fans of Mario, Sonic or Pokemon. They don't acknowledge that these vast majority aren't into what they're into which gives some validation to the critics of the Mario movie despite the audience winning over. There's always room for improvement. Perfection is an illusion. What you consider perfect may not seem perfect to someone else. Episodes 4 and 5 Star Wars still have their flaws but no one ever acknowledges them, and if that's the case but they criticize other aspects of Star Wars like the prequels and sequels but not the originals then I don't think that's fair. EDIT: But now that I mentioned Star Wars, especially for any other toxic fandoms (like the Sonic games), who cares about advocacy really. Fans, especially toxic fans are selfish and don't care about anyone who isn't a fan of what they love. They automatically view them as people who are not of their religion and whenever they hear something that they don't want to hear or doesn't match with their opinions they take as a personal insult as if they register anything as an objective direct threat to whatever they love or interests are in. They take criticism as someone telling them that what they love is wrong. Liking or enjoying something that's mediocre or can be improved upon, or liking a garbage movie means that there is something medically wrong with you. That's the mindset of these toxic people.

I think people miss the idea that the criticisms about the “flaws” are missing the actual point of the movie what you want to movie to be isn’t what matters it’s whether the movie caters to the audience it’s appealing to you can dislike it but the movies isn’t bad or mid if it’s like by it’s target audience as the one who didn’t like it you either A. Weren’t the target audience B. Missed the point of what the movie is or C. Just don’t like it my opinion is if you over analyze the Mario movie that’s on you not the movie it’s Mario expecting something always puts you at fault if you can admit you found it fine because you aren’t a fan of the original you instantly do far more to help the discourse than to state it’s just “bad” with no context

i get that some fans can be crazy defensive but i take far larger issue with people who ARENT fans of something dedicating effort to invade online spaces where actual fans of something want to come together to enjoy something they alone in their individual living situations find happiness in. like bffr, who are any of us to gatekeep “enjoyment” by using subjective concepts such as “quality” or “exceptionalism” as a metric for whether fans should enjoy or blindly defend a piece of media? on a consumer level, if something sucks it will generate insufficient fans to continue making profit. those who dont like that thing will be rewarded by seeing less like it be produced into the world. there is a time place and space for critical reviews of something and there is a time place and space for subjective fandom worship stupidness. such is being human. to love something despite its flaws. for some these “mid” adaptations may be personally special so they get defensive because everytime they see something pertaining to this thing its just negative and draining of all love. cinemasins is cool but cinemawins is refreshing af.. personally think det.pikachu it’s a trash adaptation that spits in the face of pokemon fans for an interesting narrative that’s lazily written i think super mario bros (haven’t seen) is a mid adaptation, cartoon adaptations have been done and are good so it’s not breaking new ground in the “live action” sense. im waiting for a live action mario movie to further that thought. haven’t seen it yet so idk as an actual movie.. and i think sonic is a great adaptation so far. i think it’s great they seem to be telling a version of sonics actual origin that somewhat aligns with the games. i only played a few and never for the story so this all is new for me and im while critical of the movie happy it exists and want to see it continue. all 3 can be criticized for the sake of improvement but keep the hate for entertainment to the bare minimum. its like mcu humor, just everywhere in every thing all the time..
