Glad you agree that the Ace Attorney ones aren't part of the problem. Not only did they release the games to new platforms, making them available to audiences that previously couldn't play them, but it's also pretty obvious that it's all leading up to the release of a new game, whatever that may be. Plus there's all of the QoL features, ability to switch between old and new stuff, the gallery and similar stuff that really make it feel like they are the definitive edition of the game they're remastering, rather than taking away from or changing the original experience too much. In other words, it feels like those remasters actually justify their own existence, and contribute to not only the experience of the original game, but the entire franchise they stem from.

One problem with these remakes is that unfortunately, capcom has only done remakes of their ace attorney games for the past 6 years. We haven't gotten a new ace attorney game since 2016 with spirit of justice. Or in the US we got the great ace attorney in 2020. But that's still a long time. I would've loved that when you buy a Remake/Remaster, you still got the original in the bundle. Ace Attorney Investigation Collections is a good example because you can play with the original graphics from the series. But Remake and Remasters are a double edge sword for me because no matter how faithful you are to the original game, something will be lost to time/translation be it the script, visuals or mechanic that helped sell series in the first place. Yeah, in some areas the games are improved, but it would've been great to have both versions readily available with any extra purchases so you can see where the game started to today version as a form of appreciation to gaming as a whole.

Notably (and I know this isn’t always right) the issues with losing older games and lack of preservation is extremely prominent with Japanese-made products. Why Japanese-based companies hate giving their fans what they want I will never understand.
@Zetact_3 ай бұрын
If anything it's just that Japanese are more culturally aligned with ephemeral things. They really enjoy things that are scarce, it's just a philosophical cultural difference I think. As well as Japanese typically being more attuned to analog products/physical media. It's not that they hate the fans, it's often that it's probably just not on their minds. Though with gacha games having been the trend in Japan long enough for them to see multiple popular games EoS, and a lot of them including some VERY dedicated work from the writers of said game, having "offline ports" that preserve the gacha game is becoming more common so for all the problems gacha brings it might spotlight the importance of preservation to Japan.

Not only that, remakes and remasters is making the PS5 and Xbox Series no games, plus being released on last gen consoles the PS4 and Xbox One which just makes this even worse. And not only that, people will beg their favorite game from the 6th gen console era to be remaster or remake, yet later on people are going to complain that PS5 and Xbox Series have no games. Plus if we want a beloved PS2 game or Xbox game it’s called backwards comparability, software emulating PS2, Xbox, and GameCube is not that hard, especially the power of 9th gen consoles. These additional reasons is why I hate remasters and remakes, with making no new original games on PS5 and Xbox Series makes me hate remakes and remasters even more.

A remaster is a just a scaled up port, a remake is when it’s the same game but everything was remade from the ground up, and a reboot is when the story is altered as the new version is made. Many people can’t tell the difference between these and conflate them with each other making the distinction between them almost meaningless.

In addition, for remasters, the source code (basically the skeleton) of the original game is underneath. GTA Definitive Edition is a good example of it where it is rendered by Unreal Engine 4, but the original PS2 game's source code is under it, that's why it's still feels like the original, for better or worse. Another example is Bluepoint's Sony "Remakes" where games like Shadow of the Colossus have the original game running underneath the new visuals (as one of the devs admitted), making it more of a remaster than a remake (that's why most glitches and tricks in the original Demons Souls still work in the "remake").

Both are either mediocre or outright bad versions of their original counterparts but what makes them truly infuriating is the fact that Rockstar delisted said original versions, the most recent example beign the Max Payne remake that delisted the first and second game from Steam in several regions of the world before the remake had so much as a trailer(granted Max Payne 2 eventually came back, but it should've never been gone in the first place), forcing players to go to third party game sellers such as GMG in order to play that classic

Yeah, the worst kind of remakes/remasters are the ones where companies just delist the perfectly playable original versions in order to “replace” them. I will still continue to support remakes and remasters because I love seeing older games come to new hardware, even if I played the originals, and in the case of remakes, there's a lot you can do with them beyond just being the superior versions. I love FF7 Remake and Rebirth for this reason on top of Square not trying to replace the original with them. In fact in this case, the original is more accessible due to being on more systems. However yes, I can understand issues a lot of people have with some wanting games to be remade that honestly don't need them or some companies making the originals commercially unavailable, usually to try and boost the remakes' numbers. I enjoy the N. Sane Trilogy and the Reignited Trilogy but it is unfortunate that those are the only versions available on the market while the easiest way to get the originals is to jump through a bunch of hoops to get money onto your PSN account on the PS3 and buy the originals that way. And the PS3 is considered a retro console by companies nowadays.

Imo, a remaster just tells you how much of the original game was updated from the original. Expansion does the same as well. A remake and a port are just that. Is it a game mostly rebuilt, or is it just the original made available on new devices. PM TYD is both a remake and a remaster as it barely changes from the original, but it’s still mostly rebuilt apparently. If we went through the idea of the game not being a remake, but just a remaster because of how little was added. Then that would mean Splatoon 2 with the Octo-Expansion is a remake. Since it’s an entire new story mode added to the original game. That doesn’t make any sense. Even if we viewed these terms just in the realms of a rerelease, let’s pretend Splatoon 2 was rereleased, and the Octo-expansion is new content exclusive to said rerelease. Again, at that point, it would be counted as a remake. Even, even if it needs to literally be remade to count, that makes it impossible to call it a remaster at that point. As a remaster can’t be a remake at the same time, as we for some reason separate the two at all costs. Just say it’s a remastered port or remake, or an expanded port or remake. Even if my opinions on remaster and expansion doesn’t work, it doesn’t change the literal definition of what makes a remake. PM TYD for example will always forever be a remake. No matter the amount of content.

There are some I can get like REmake 1, Halo 2 Anniversary, (even though you can switch it to the og) and what I've heard of Dead Space Remake, but when they're different like REmake 2-4, having the original available via port (P3P for Reload even if FES would be more appropriate) or even as an unlock after beating the game would aid with such a worry.

Generally, I'm fine with the prospect of remakes/remasters. However, my main issue is when they cause the original games to be completely disregarded. One of the most egregious examples is when rockstar delisted the original PS2 GTA games and only offered their dogshit remasters to officially play them. Additionally, I also think games that are considered infamous should be remade more often. Games like Castlevania the Adventure Rebirth and Sonic Project 06 for instance transformed what were universally agreed bad games into great worthwhile experiences.

I honestly wouldn’t say I’m too burnt out on remakes. Not only have some allowed me to experience games I’ve already enjoyed with a brand new coat of paint, like with Persona 3 Reload, but in the case of TTYD Remake, it’s by far the definitive version of the game for me with how much they upgraded the game’s presentation (especially the soundtrack, with EVERY new area having it’s own brand new battle theme) and all the QoL improvements they added that cut down on the redundant backtracking. Which was by and large my biggest issue with the original. And with RE4 Remake last year, it was by and large my #2 game of 2023, only behind Zelda TotK, being that it felt like a great modern reimagining of RE4 that retained what made the original great while having plenty of interesting additions of its own. And therefore doesn’t replace it, but instead serves as a solid companion piece to the original. There are of course some remakes I think miss the mark of the original or don’t understand what made it special to begin with, like with RE3 Remake or XIII Remake. But I’d overall say the good ones at least outweigh the bad, and there are still some games I’d love to see remade as long as they’re done well, like Sonic Adventure or Earthbound. Or even Chrono Trigger if it got an HD-2D remake like with the upcoming Dragon Quest 3 Remake.

To me the good of a remake or re-release depends on a few factors. How assessable is the base game, are there any major problems with the original that can be fixed, is there anything on the cutting room floor that can be added in a remake, and just how different is the remake. I am a massive Megaman Battle Network fan and love the fact that the remasters exist. Most of the games were locked on the gba, there were a few minor bugs, and both the 5th and 6th games had content locked to the JP versions until the remasters came out. To me, they are great remaster...even if the filter settings are a little weird and the unchanged English script is still dumb at points. With just, as stated in the video, a few more options to preserve what was originally there, I would say the Battle Network remasters are a prime example of how to preserve a game series for the future.

Now this is good for me now, but when wanting to expierence games i only was able to rent from blockbuster back then it becomes a lot harder as the prices have sky rocketed for even more popular games like fatal frame 2 going for about 80 usd on ebay used and only having the disc. Now if tecmo still has the source code saved (the final version) then why not just make it a collection for the first three games and up the resolution to a natural 1080p. Itd be good will to the fans and should be easy money made. The problem is not many studios (outside of nintendo or squaresoft) actually kept it intact as we have seen konami do with the silent hill hd collection. Which to be fair did it get fixed to a playable state after a year? Yes, but the fog and a few other small details just arent what they were not to mention for silent hill 3 hd its all new voices and its not bad, but lacks the uncanny voice acting that makes you wonder is it intentionally off or just a product of the time. With the silent hill 2 remake despite being set to release later i watched a few trailers and thought to myself what is wrong with this company. Ok a new vision of a classic and a that i get it and sure it worked well for resident evil 2 and 4 remake. My issue though much like with the silent hill 3 hd port is the voice acting and change in dialogue(glimpsed from the trailers) james just doesnt sound like james he sounds more like a cosplayer. And no disrespect to troy Baker as he is a great voice actor, but there is no hint of a david lynch style narrative or akwardness to it which when something important happens and the line hits perfectly i can only describe it as dream like only to be awaken from a nightmare with the gravity of the situation hitting you. On top of that although i know "modern" audiences eont care for fixed camera angles it does if used correctly make the expierence better. You can use it for tension or my favorite that tecmo perfected in fatal frame as scares. The whole blink and youll miss it moments are perfect especially in something like fatal frame 3 and these aspects are a paramount to the games identity. Other times i feel just changing the gameplay is a huge downgrade for me. As an example final fantasy 7 with its turn based atb system workwd perfectly for me and all i ever wanted from a remake of it was just up the visuals, add a bit more content, and add some voices. Instead i got a good game that i dont really see as on par with the original as final fantasy 7 remake just plays like final fantasy 12 but if you dont like waiting you can mash a few buttons and it takes away a lot of the strategy or need to level up in my opinion by making it too easy which as a final fantasy fan i wont lie the original 7 was easy unless if you go after super bosses like i usually do. Remake on the other hand i never really had to put in any effort or struggle and some choices made me wonder why change it as Barret seems off to me and cloud definetly has less of a smart ass with a good heart aspect to him almost like he was rewritten to fit the pop culture view of him as in the original no he was a bit sassy and there were some nice comedic moments to break up the tension. I really was just expecting something like Okami Hd or the resident evil 1 remake where yeah we have a few changes but its more to expand what we had rather than trying to make one game into its own series for a single story to suck consumers wallets dry. The way i think about it is im in favor of ports even if the quality is not a huge upgrade and if it keeps the original running smoothly. Just look at the ports snk (kof, fatal fury), insomniac (ratchet and clank), and even naughty dog (jak and daxter which yes last of us get out here) can do where its what we enjoyed just on modern systems and perserved. Sure ratchet made it to hd along with jak and daxter but i see those as more of the exception as again some developers run into issues especially when instead of doing it in house theyd get a really small inexpierenced studio a small paycheck to do it, but even just running off of snk's framework where they dont add or upscale anything it is good enough as yes i can play kof 98 or kof 02 with no issues digitially. I wish i can see more companies take that approach and i got to hand it to another company i have little faith in but Konami thanks for the castlevania collections they still retain what made those games great (even though rondo is stuck as playstation exclusive for some odd reason). I would love to see fatal frame, tekken, mortal kombat, dragon quest, and so many more get the same treatment especially since from their end its really just a future investment that really would be low cost. Basically since cross generation support has been a thing for awhile you can still support a port in the engine you made it on for decades without having to change it potentially ever at this point. It really is just taking that first step and doing it right and then sit back and let the cash flow in. Some might think that strange, but with gaming increasing in popularity not just for modern but what is now considered retro you only can assume hey this will actually sell a bit more in the future. Someone watches a streamer or a youtuber talk about a series chances are they might buy it. Hell im guilty of that as well as thats how i got into darkstalkers which hasnt had a new entry since the late 90s which for someone born in 97 is crazy to think about as im almost the same age as the last entry of a series i love. If people need more proof then look at the amount of people who pay for nintendo's online service as i guarentee a good chunk of those sales is due to their retro collection. Thats originally what sold me as the nes and snes library although not complete was still good and i even upgraded for the genesis, n64, and gameboy emulators too. At this rate i know some games are only ever gonna be expierenced by being a pirate like eternal darkness sanity's requiem due to legal issues, but then again if you could only save 4 out of 5 people from a fire or nobody at all then id like to think we can still get at least four people out of there.

Yeah I say it ultimately depends because I do think Remakes or Remasters can be wonderous for preserving old games we haven't seen in a long time but yeah I do hope they don't become unnecessary like with what's happening to Last of Us a series that's already accessible but Naughty Dog & Sony think they need more money
@darkjammin793 ай бұрын
I am always on side of accessibility. It shouldn't be a small fortune to legally access titles 2-4 generations old. While I can go on game preservation, this topic is for the remake/remaster issue we've been experiencing. Not a fan in general due to the lackluster treatment and often disrespect/not understanding the original. Some hit it out of the park and am sad my favorite RE game is warped to what it is as the modern way to experience it. I hate MOST aspects of the three problems you've gone over. Removal is necessary for a few bits, but still annoy me to no end as one that does understand product of its time. Although taking out tedium is a rare plus. Selection is purely driven by market, that really is all I can say on that matter. Replacements are stuck in the middle where being accessible is nice but the cost of losing heart/design aspects along the way suck. Now improving isn't easy, especially when faced with nostalgia monsters like myself. Often, I exclude myself by keeping in mind of NOT being the target audience for it. But it can create interesting or weird conversations when play the "same" game but come out with extensively different experiences that may not shift only by whats changed. Such as expectations for example, I picked up a remake of Alpha Ruby to give gen 3 its shot and LOVED it. I didn't know of the battle frontier and don't feel mad about that outcome. Sad sure, but I had a fantastic experience that I lament suffers from Pokemon often leaving features behind. Good lord thats over a decade ago....

Medievil ps4 was an unexpected remake due to the series being dead aside from them remaking the first game for the psp i think. It was also a pretty good remake.

I personally still enjoy remakes and remasters. It brings games you can't legally play to were you can. Imo ALL games should be in a forever accessible digital library and remasters should only be for graphical updates. Also stop bowing down to final fantasy 7 give final fantasy 6 love. Bottom line if you're not making a new level , new graphics, voice acting or porting a Japanese exclusive, just put it in a free to play from any counsel library. But ever notice how only overrated hyped games get remakes? Never final fantasy 6 or secret of evermore.

Ports/remasters of games that are not available on current hardware: Good. Honestly I think porting is the ideal way to do this - it's cheaper for the company and gets the most pure version of the game. Remakes/remasters of games that iron out flaws (and I mean in the "they keep the intent of the game while cleaning up some of the things that were quality of life flaws from the original", not "they overhaul the mechanics to match what the current devs think the game 'should' be"): Also fine. Full on remake from the ground up of a downright BAD game to give its ideas a retry: Fine. Anything else is rather unnecessary. "More modern gameplay elements" is a silly point, it's oftentimes just saying "throw in trendy mechanics even if it goes against the idea of the original." If the game is going to be designed like a modern game then it shouldn't be a remake - well, going back to earlier, if the original game was "bad but important" then a ground-up remake is fine. Say for instance when Capcom ports Street Fighter II they typically include ALL of the original game's limitations, clunkiness and jank because it's fundamental to SF2's identity and overall the problems in SF2 are not significant enough to make the game bad. They don't say, "We need SF2 to have EX moves, dashes and parries because those are in our current Street Fighter games." If Capcom were to remake Street Fighter 1 and just did the entire thing from scratch to make it an actual fighting game then that would be fine - it's just "let's have a version of this incredibly important part of gaming history, but, like, in a way that isn't awful."

As someone who loves retro gaming I agree on those takes and I don't want to support them over new entries. But I can't say I'm not content with some of those titles re-releasing as I can't find or afford buying the old consoles and games (nor a gaming PC to emulate). My friends and I didn't grow up with a gamecube and we were so excited for Thousand year door to come back (And i'd give anything to play super paper Mario now). Lots of us treat remasters like polished ports and then there are remakes like FFVII that try to do something different in addition to updated designs. But the example of AA investigations is a good one. Not only is the second game officially released, they understood how much people enjoyed the pixel sprites and kept it as an option. But if in the future, they release the og trilogy and dare replace the iconic 2D sprites and animations with modernized 3D AI looking horrors, I will riot.

It makes me feel like new consoles should Not come out UNTIL the industry faces its utter FAILURE at Game Creation! I don't mean to be harsh. I'm pretty much cool with remakes and remasters of older games, especially since a lot of them are either hard to come by for a reasonable price or have old jank that make them hard to play for a newer audience. My only thing with them is i prefer remakes that retain as much of the original design as possible while mostly just updating graphics and mechanics to modern standards, effectively being a definitive version of a game rather than a new take on it. I do have a limit on that notion though, using Pokemon as the example, BDSP is way too damn close to the originals and doesn't even pull from Platinum enough while the other past remakes would at least pull in things from their respective 3rd versions and expand upon them in a mostly good fashion, ORAS has some weird choices here and there that puts it below FRLG and HGSS in terms of that but still overall good imo.

What sucks is that the original Yakuza 1 & 2 has a great Ps3 and Wii U remaster( I only played/have the Ps3 version so I don’t know how the Wii U version plays) that has some QoL changes like having the item box be available in payphones/savespots. The thing is, it was never localized. But if you’ve played OG Yakuza 1&2 enough times or willing to play with a guide most of the time, then I would recommend it if you have a Ps3. The shame is that it isn’t likely to be ported with a proper localization, just look the Kiwami switch port announcement.

since games nowadays the limitation of hardware is almost gone I'd say in about 5-10 years it will be gone all together (seriously what's next if all low end PC can do high graphic for games in the future) I think then remakes and remasters will have less reason to be made, why do it when things have reach it peaks? how can you remakes or remasters games that came out in this year 10 years after this? make a VR port?

2:04 Good thing Jak and Daxter got remastered into PC and Modern consoles. 2:38 I don’t think I am going get that game. I more excited of Epic Mickey remastered. Crash Bandicoot got a good run while it lasted. Curse you Activision. What are your thoughts on *Crash Team Rumble?* I am still not use to the voice of Frank East. 5:26 Larry looks like he been Whitewashed. Oh my god the Feige and Doctor Strange all over again. I do agree I don’t mind updating characters designs. But Larry doesn’t look like he’s a butcher. He looks like he is a security guard. Huh. Paul Blart mall cop 3: zombie outbreak. 7:10 Nemesis: *All I ever want to able to smell, like rest of you!* Context: Patrick Star. 8:41 It reminds me the controversy about Chrono Cross Radical dreamers about where that “ladylike” line was changed. Honestly it didn’t bother me, it not like effect the gameplay and story overall. Even Chrono Cross at least give players the option the change back to old visual graphic designs. 11:33 Or *Haunting Grounds* I really want to play that game. I think Dementia should be part Marvel vs Capcom 4. 12:27 Rogue Galaxy is acknowledged by Astro Bot. 13:55 That is a fact. Shame Tech Romancer doesn’t get remastered. Hell Capcom didn’t put it in their Capcom fighting collection 2. With all the Castlevania game becoming a remastered collection I do hope Konami makes a 4 game collection of *Boktai.* including Boktai 3 which never officially release in the west. I do prefer obscure or lesser popular game get remastered and games I never played. Like Dino Rikki. I can see that getting a remake. Or Xenoblade chronicles x. I didn’t have a Wii U back then so I want Chronicles x gets a remastered port. Or best of all, Blue Dragon. I watch the anime but I’ve never played the game. Forgive Toriyama. You should added the 4th on censorship. The most noticeable one is Dragon Quest 8 for 3DS, with the Marcello scene. But I still enjoy the game. I don’t mind it has add on as long it doesn’t it effect or disgrace the original game itself. You think *Shin Megami Tensei Deep Strange Journey* is a good remake? They add voice acting but they still keep the English localization dialogue. I saw a video they said Deep Strange Journey is not good as the original. I like so far. Yes, I did not beat it yet.

I don't have an issue with remakes and / or remasters (or even re-releases) when they are of good quality, or bring a game that never came out of the old console it was on etc. I'm not against emulation mind you, but I view it as another way of preserving the game. However, the price has to be correct. If you re-release a game that's 20 years old and lasts for a couple hours, and expect 60 bucks that's not gonna sit well with me. For the case of remakes, it really depends if A) the game kinda would benefit from a coat of paint due to controls, etc (Graphics isn't an issue). Or B) if the game is hard to access. Metal Gear Solid Delta for example, isn't really necessary. I don't mind it existing, but it isn't necessary. MGS3 is available on PC nowadays. But fresh controls and the game essentially getting modernised is fine, just not necessarily worth full price. As examples of remakes that I'd say are fine, RE2 and RE4 are fine (RE4 kinda touches on the MGS Delta thing too). RE3 isn't, not because it was rushed, but because they ask 60 bucks while keeping the game at the same lenght as the original. RE3 remake is 5 hours long, and doesn't even have a second campaign to play like RE2 does (even if the remake doesn't give you the real Claire campaign if I'm being honest). All you get is a higher difficulty. And sure, you get "RE-sistance" for free. Or you can view it as two 30 bucks games packaged in one that you can't separate, and one of the two is a multiplayer game that's pretty much dead from the get go, as RE games never were multiplayer focused (Except RE5 and RE6 which want Coop to be a thing). Another game that I'll be happy to see, is MGS4 finaly getting out of the PS3. Same for the the re-release of Miles Investigation, having the second game finaly get officially translated and come out of japan is a good thing. is it worth 60 bucks tho? That's another question.

I'm not entirely burnt out on Remakes _yet,_ as I am happy with the Thousand Year Door remake (outside of a few changes that left me kinda meh...) and I just recently got the newest Ace Attorney remake as I wanted to own all of them and Edgeworth is my favorite character as is. That said, there _are_ a lot of them, and I am tired of game companies going for the low hanging fruit while ignoring the more niche ones. Especially in this age of Indie games being so big. Imagine Brave Fencer Musashi getting a remaster _now_ of all times. That game is so unique and niche that the indie gamers would flock to it like crazy more than likely. And oh would you look at that Square Enix. _Free money._ Not like you guys need that right? 😏
