We would basically give the pitch and before they could ask any questions we would ask if their names and addresses were correct then ask if we can add it to their account. When I was a teen we had a Chinese exchange student living with us for 2 years. Every time the telemarketers would call our land line, we'd ask her to come into the room and pick up the phone and just start speaking as fast as possible in Mandarin. There is NOTHING more funny that listening to that immediate silence followed by the hang up sound. My Granddad was the best for this sort of thing. Whenever a cold caller would call his landline he'd answer, and when they asked to speak to the home owner he'd say things like "Sorry love, I'm just burgling the place." Instant hang up on the other end. At one point when the scammers were in their early stages, they'd call up to tell you you'd won a fabulous holiday cruise, when this would happen he'd say things like "Oh that's just what I need after getting out of prison", or "Sorry, I can't go on a cruise, I'm shipping out to Iraq next week." Don't say "yes" as they can record and use it. If they ask for you in any way or if you can hear them, don't answer that question. Instead, ask, "Who is this?" or "Who's calling, please?" If the name sounds fake and/or you hear a noisy call center in the background, hang up. If they claim to be from Amazon, Microsoft, a government agency, a bank, etc., I say, "No you're not," and hang up if I even bother to answer. Be careful of banks and other financial businesses even when you initiate the call. Some of them get hacked. You might want to call more than once or try a different number.
