My small mango tree is flowering. I'm going to prune it. Thanks!

Another great video. But it hurts to trim them back but I can understand helping with energy distribution

This is extra important in a place like Southern California where I live. We get way fewer growth spurts during the growing season and if you don't time the pruning of the panicles correctly you can get flowers all year long and very little foliage.

Good to know! We have many viewers from California, so it's great to have feedback about how mangos grow there.

When is a good time to prune the flowers in So Cal?
@tinyjungle_4 жыл бұрын
@@JelloVibez I'm definitely no expert but Ill try and help. What is your goal? Grow a tree to get established first or prune for fruiting? Grafted tree or seedling?
@JelloVibez4 жыл бұрын
@@tinyjungle_I would like get the roots and stem established first. My plant is only 3 feet high and has started flowering
@tinyjungle_4 жыл бұрын
@@JelloVibez I'll assume it's probably grafted then. A few things I look for before pruning off the panicles. Night time temps 60 degrees or above. Pea sized fruit if holding fruit. If you have both of those factors in place then make sure the panicles aren't actively still growing. My Valencia pride's panicles still grow for a while even if it's already holding pea sized fruit with 60 degree or hotter night time temps. If you prune too early mangoes will flower again here and the trees stay tiny. Imo I wouldn't let any fruit mature the first 2- 3 years.

I'm going to trim my pinnacles. At what height or trunk thickness should I start to let my tree hold fruit? I have 3 separate trees and they're all about 3 feet tall and have a trunk that's about an inch.

How about a mango tree about 5-6’ tall... still remove flowers and fruit? How big should tree be before allowing to fully bloom and fruit??? Thanks

Should I leave the flowers alone if even though it's small, if it's as big as I want it to get? I'm growing in pot in zone 5a. It goes outside during summer, the rest of the year it's inside.

I'm wondering the same thing! Mine is flowering. It's small, but it's exactly how I want it. She said in another video that if they're too small, they can fruit and then die. But not always. I'm thinking maybe I'll narrow it down to 1 mango to support?

My mango tree is 6 feet tall do I keep the flowers on or do I trim them?
@rebblekrew75276 жыл бұрын
Thank u Chris for that very valuable information, I’ve known about cutting off the blooms but never knew to leave som on to not in-courage new blooms,,,, I had 1QUESTION,, is it ok to leave some blooms on small trees that will only be raised in containers to encourage a small size??
@TrulyTropical6 жыл бұрын
If the tree is already the size you would like it be, then leave the blooms. (But make sure that the tree can support the development of the fruit.) If you still want the tree to grow, cut back the blooms to encourage branching and growth.

I am new in to tropical fruit gardening; your trees are looking great. Where is your garden locate/agriculture zone ?

thank you. I've been wondering if I did the right thing my pinching the flower back and leaving only a few left, vs cutting the panicle entirely. Looks like I did. You have a video on Mallika mango and on how fast it grows? Mine seem to only grow 6" a year in the grown. Not sure if that's normal.

Hi Chris. So what should we do after cutting the bloom spike shorter leaving just a few flowers? Will it eventually fall off? Should we wait till a certain time and snap just the spikes off at their bases, or make a cut below the spike entirely? What's the best way to go about taking them off and preparing the young tree for vigorous vegetative growth? So many questions..ahhhhh :)

Hi there, How much of the small fruit can you actually leave on? That may not stress the young tree out too much. I have a young mango tree with good growth on it and plenty of small flowers and fruit growing. Basically how many should I leave on if any?

this is great information, I was reading a forum for SoCal growers and they were complaining about not being able to get enough growth on their young trees and how they kept regrowing panicles after being pruned. A few experts chimed in and said you had to let at least some fruit grow and then take them off after they reach over 3cm in size.

When do you start letting them keep some of the flowers/fruit? Is it a age thing or a size thing?
@WildDanMan6 жыл бұрын
Cathie Galbraith size more than age and will depend on your climate. In the perfect climate you could let a small established tree hold a mango or two but it will reeeallly slow down a small tree.

Do you fertilize just before they flower? I haven’t fertilize mine because people say it’s too cold. I’m in Cali and not sure when should I fertilize.
@TrulyTropical6 жыл бұрын
A typical time to fertilize is after you pick your mangos. You don't want to add nitrogen before the fruit because it can compromise the flavor.
