​@@VigosDad If u are from Poland and u watch movie with lector from little it is normal for u. Dubbed films are wird for u. U see Clint Estwood with deferent voice and u think WTF? Lector allow u to engoy original voice and understand what they say. Like with subtitles but u don't need to read. I saw Mad Max2 with german dubbing - it was strange and funny. In poland dubbing is allowed only in animation, like Moana/Vaiana, Minions, Shreck etc.

U know what actor is saying and u hear oryginal actor. Subtitles is good when u are fresh. After 8 hours of working and 10-12h of activity last thing i want to do is to read.

Why the surprise? These appear to be typical over the counter (non prescription medicine). In the USA we've had direct marketing of perscription drugs for some time. This helped to lead the way into our current opioid crisis. Hint: Poland you don't want to be like US.

EVERYBODY !!!! foreigners are very surprised that in Polish TV films are read by a LEKTOR (speaker) - always a man. I am Polish and I'm used to it. I don't mind a male voice reading female roles. He is neutral to me. At the same time, I hear the natural and real voice of the actors. I personally HATE !!! dubbing. I only tolerate it in cartoons and animated films for children. The film must be with subtitles or a lektor. I remember it was a traumatic experience for me to watch the western with John Wayne speaking "Hände hoch" in German

I have exactly the same feeling about the LEKTOR vs dubbing. Being a good LEKTOR is an art (or maybe a natural predisposition) - one must literally disappear in the background, so that the viewer can focus on the original voices and perceive the emotions. Not all "lektors" have that ability, fortunately most do have. And as to dubbing - I don't know what is worse: John Wayne saying "Hände hoch" or deputy sheriff referring to the sheriff by "товарищ начальник", which my colleague witnessed in the former Soviet Union. For me the first one is ridiculous and also creepy at the same time, while the latter - just funny, although ruining the atmosphere of a western film (or maybe just for that).

There's one female speaker (lektor): Krystyna Czubówna. She mostly narrates wildlife documentaries though. She has a deep, soothing voice.

@@paulinagrzmiel3012 With time you learn to ignore the lektor, it doesn't bother you. And lektor is much better than subtitles in case of, for example, Swedish films, where they speak so fast that it's hard to keep up reading and watching the actors' faces and body language. And taking into account the fact that 80% of human communication is nonverbal you lose a lot taking your eyes off the actors/scene. The lektor is not such a stupid invention. ;)

@@krystynamarkowska1521 nigdy nie miałam problemu z czytaniem, szczególnie szybkim, zawsze to wolałam od oglądania filmow. Dlatego subtitles forever! You need also hear actors voice, the original gags and puns. Polish translations is kind of awkward sometimes so for me it's only need for better understanding of some dialoguea. When there is lector it kind of loses some fun of original dialogues... Always choose Netflix with subtitles or you tube :)

The clothes thing is something I realized after coming to England and noticing how people here ignore the weather, just get used to being cold. The buildings aren't properly insulated either, mould on the walls is a common problem. I guess in Poland, it gets cold enough that just putting up with it is not an option, cold is your enemy and you have to protect yourself.

That's so true! I, a Pole, lived in the UK for a year and couldn't comprehend it. Then I moved to Canada. I thought "oh, at least Canadian winter is really cold, people won't be walking stupidly in light clothes". How mistaken I was. I went out. It was -25. Real feel -35. It's a very good translation! Only thing that dissapear in translation is the tone of "See ya!" (informal - you rather say it to your friend) vs "Do widzenia" (it's more formal, you can say it to your teacher, coworker or boss). But it's a little thing.

If you have problem with hot weather, why you wear dark clothes on such weather? They focus way more sunlight towards your body causing you heat illness. During Spring and Summer you should wear light clothes. During Autumn and Winter you should wear dark clothes. Remember to protect your head from heat illness. Wear white hat during hot day.

Polish "lektor" is just voice in your head. You can listen to the original voices in any language and yet understand what they are talking about because "the voice in your had" does translation for you. Most of Poles (except for little kids) prefer lektor, because we want still hear the original voices of actors. That's why we can guess most actors by just their voices even if they are Chinese or Martian, LOL. OTC medicine ads are so strange? Have you ever heard American ads on PRESCRIPTION medicine? . With overdressing, it's not exactly like that. Yes, we do not like cold (who does?), but we re not alone in this aspect. If you want to see parents overdressing their kids, go to Ukraine. They were very surprised to see small kids in Poland wearing T-shirts at the "freezing temperature of just 18 Celsius" LOL Many people in Poland are just too lazy to adapt their dressing to the weather or season. I myself do go out in T-shirt in cold autumn or warm dressed in hot days in March/April (winter coat at +20 Celsius may look a little strange, but in spring and autumn seeing people on the street wearing T-shirt and others wearing warm sweaters and coats is common thing; some people just adapt faster than other). Being pissed on a customer for not having the exact amount of cash has nothing to do with Communism. For practical reasons we do not use cash unless it's necessary and if we do, we tend to use the counted amount because so many people try to pay with banknote that it causes trouble for the seller. The problem is probably with our aversion to coins. No one likes to have them in their pocket. They are heavy, take place and do noise. Everyone tries to pay with the exact amount of coins so we get rid of coins quickly and next seller has a problem. Poland is country with one of the highest rate of credit/debit card and mobile payments and every time we have to pay with cash is a nightmare (unless you belong to the old generation); it just feels unnatural these days to have a wallet (I know a lot of people who do not have a wallet; they just carry their ID card attached to their mobile phone.

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I like to have some cash on me, although coins, especially grosze are pain in the ass. I would gladly get rid of them entirely, but I know it won't happen. Something costs 4.99 to give you an impression that it is cheaper than 5.00, because there is a 4 in front. I'm not a big fan of technology, so when I see someone paying with their phone I always think that those are the people who will be first in line to get micro-chipped. And because of these morons, who are willing to trade their freedom for a little bit of convenience, others will eventually be forced to do the same.

@@alicenightray5901 You cannot translate more than 50% English jokes 1:1 to keep them funny in Polish, but take into consideration that you could not translate more than 20% Polish jokes into English without losing it altogether. It was always problematic in movies, especially non-American ones (the American culture and humor is quite well known round the world, so it's the lesser problem). How many years did you watch movies with Polish lector? We are used to it and we hear the original voice melody; it's like putting video and audio path together; you do that without even thinking. Maybe if I were listening to dubbing from a child, I'd appreciate it, but sorry, I simply can't (dubbed movies sound childish to me, because dubbing in Poland is used almost exclusively for children's films).

There are three additional things about Polish names that really surprised me - and I'm surprise you didn't go through them: 1) the diminutives and how they work (standardized, multiple diminutives for each name ranging from formal to very familiar/intimate), 2) How even names (and places) decline in the Polish language, and 3) How last names with "-ski" endings actually end in "-ska" for the females in the family. You could do a whole episode on how Polish names work!

When it comes to winters and clothing we like layering our clothes so when we go indoors we can easily take off outer layers (coat, hoodie) and adjust to the indoor temperature and it works the opposite way also. If we can't predict the weather it's better to wear more layers than being forced to go in the rain dressed in t-shirt only

Yes I would love to find out what your wife surprises in Domestic Republic. I been there for vacation in Punta Canta but we were inside the resort because they told me it's not safe for me to walk around and exploring outside of the resort. The resort was very nice I stayed in the house with 3 bedrooms 4 bathrooms and they stocked the refrigerator with beer Presidente. I had a lady coming and making breakfast for me and someone from the staff was cleaning the pool on back yard were I seen for the first time how bananas growing.🤗 I been outside to the rum factory and Jewelry Factory but the Jewelry there were not nice finished so I did not get anything there but there were outside lots of people begging for money which actually scared me because I never seen so many people suronded me at the same time and I could understand what they saying but later on I find out from the driver they just wanted money from me I thought they wanted to hurt be and since I was with my daughter who was only like 3 years old I just hold her close to me to protect her. The weather there is beautiful hot I love the rain to cool off and the fact that sun comes back so quickly after the rain or even the sun is out doing the rain. I was shocked seeing the whole family on one motorcycle with kids and they are without any helmets. I been told to drink only water in the bottle because it's not safe from the faucets. The stuff were nice and everything looked nice and clean which made me very happy to see special I was traveling with my child so that was very important for me.

Heh, speaking of dark humor, did you see the movie "Ciało" (The Body)? It has non linear structure similar to Pulp Fiction in which several groups of people try to deal with the titular dead body they happened to stumble upon... and they can't just call the Police because they're doing shady stuff themselves... Huh? Everyone in my family (except my father) has a second name. And it's always a discussion - in the end, one name go first, the other one second. From my mother side it's even a tradition, that your birthday and your 'imieniny' (Name day) have to be identical. So you can celebrate at the same time.

Oh yeah Polish people do have second names, but you seldom use them, at least compared to Latin countries. Compound names are used a lot and it’s very common for friends and family to use both of your names when they call you. Imagine your name is Marek Paweł and your friends say “hej hej cześć Marek Paweł! Jak tam?” It’s weird right? For us it’s quite normal. Cheers!

At first, the lector in the movies existed because it was cheaper. But the Poles are very used to it. And they even see the advantages of this solution over dubbing. Dubbing kills the acting. Lector has such a monotonous voice because after some time you stop noticing him. You hear the original actors. And you understand what they say. In addition to the fact that Poles have a slightly darker sense of humor, they are also typically "black humor" jokes. And these laugh rather few. Example. What does a Jewish child do on a swing? Annoys the sniper. Or "Why does Ania not cry after falling off the bicycle? Because the handlebar pierced her lung."

Actually there is some medicine but those are just the one you can get without prescription. Cause it's illegal to put on commercials of any medicine that comes with prescription. So it's just cough syrup, flu stuff and "suplementy diety".
