You should make yourself a cabinet on the wall that is specifically for the storage of your respirator. I'd recommend mounting it right next to the door of your grinding room, since that is probably where you would want to use it the most often. As long as you keep the cabinet closed (seal it and use spring loaded hinges) you should have a clean respirator, quick access, and it's right at the entrance to where you use it the most often, while still having it visible from the workshop floor.

Hey Alec My grandfather used to do a lot of bladesmithing and I remember seeing a knife he made that was a steel and copper Damascus... He described the process as hammering a warm piece of copper onto a yellow hot piece of steel.. The knife came out so beautiful that I think you would really enjoy playing with the idea...

I like Adam Savage's take on this, what he calls "first order retrievability": Everything ought to stored in such a way that you can grab it and use it the moment you are near it. Things you use a lot are kept near or at the workplace. Drawers contain one layer, with items laid out so it's obvious which is which. Importantly, this also makes it super easy to put it back in the right place. One idea, also from watching a lot of Tested.com: design and make a super easy to open box for the mask, such that you can open the box and retrieve the mask with one hand, and put it back just as easily. That way, you get the best of both worlds.

As a former combat medic....Always store your respiratory in a air right bag when not in use if it contains carbon in its filters. Air will deplete the active charcoal ability to filter properly.
@ricos14977 жыл бұрын
Didn't know that. Thanks. Alec, why not buy a few respirators and leave them next to each of your respirator-required tools (in clear zip lock/freezer bags) so that they're always on hand? When they're constantly in view too, it'll act as a reminder to wear them.

I can't imagine the fumes coming off the welding he does on the billets.. probably not that good to be breathing in. AVE Mentioned that, lot of welders like to put their faces right up to their work, just eating that smoke..
@robertwallace7137 жыл бұрын
As someone who has a chunk of heavy duty welding experience: yeah, black snot rockets for days. It is way too easy to get way focused of the work and start to scrunch into it. I've melted a couple shields doing 300A+ welds and I've had my face right next to the weld, like an idiot. Actually the process that Alec is using, Short Circuit MIG, isn't putting off that much nastiness. There is a tiny bit of material that is burned out of the wire, but most of the smoke is just surface debris burning off, a little bit of oils and other impurities on the surface. It's not until you're using flux core wire or stick welding (the coating is flux) that you have a ton of burned off who the hell knows what. I did stick and flux core welding,

Maybe you can take a medkit cabinet and put a respirator sticker on it, mount it to the wall, then you have a clean place to store your respirators, that will be easily accessible - like mount the cabinet in the grinding room. just an idea :) love your content
@johngaines34487 жыл бұрын
Hey Alec, The purpose of sealing up the respirator is to prevent the dust and particles that is in every shop from collecting inside the mask. Plus the filters will stop working as they sit in the open. The filters should be changed from time to time depending on how much they are used. When you put on the mask your body oil will collect the dust that has come to rest inside the mask. Help your filters last longer and keep them in a sealed bag. It can save your lungs and sinuses from the settled dust in your shop. Just a thought. My wife and I really like your videos. Keep up the great work.

re: respirator storage - those drawstring sling backpack/book"sacks" that are commonly given out for free during college campus orientations work very well for respirator storage even in the dirty dusty section of the shop. their sling works good for a hanger on a peg or what have you and the drawstring is quick and easy. the bag part keeps the dust and paint off your mask and face shrouds. i put my extra filters in the bottom and my face shield and respirator in the top. hung off the back of the torch caddy its always a few steps away from where i typically need it. outside of the sack gets absolutely gnarley but the inside stays mint.

With the forge there, I would make a Damascus frying pan, I hate the modern non-stick rubbish and use an old fashioned steel pan, just clean and wipe with oil in between cooking. Forging and bacon, how bad is that? On the respirator, my father spent the last few years of his life using oxygen due to dust and asbestos on the lungs from working in the building trade. He was 92 so not a bad age but without the dust on the lungs he would probably still be here and enjoying life as everything else worked well.

Never mind you respirator am more worried about your back. Keep it straight at least some of the times on the power hammer. Key here is to try and move as many muscle groups to stay fit. That means don't repeat the same movement again and again. Otherwise in 20 years is by by to your back. Trust me that is how it works with a demanding job like yours.

I would point out both. Never say a respirator should be ignored. If so you're ignoring clear health risks that Alec needs to avoid if he wants a long living career working steel, you're not giving helpful advice. But I do agree on that he might be bending his back a bit much on the power hammer. Might help him out to raise the base of the hammer a bit higher. Good point WWN.

I would recommend a weightlifting belt, I’m a Drywaller and recently began using one. It was a bit of an adaptation as my trade requires bending twisting and lifting at odd angles, but the result is that I now rely on my legs which have gotten stronger, my back pain has diminished and my productivity is up. I would wear the mask the whole day, just saying.

One large factory accident with lead dust and myself and 3 others had no increase in blood lead only because neurotic cleaning/continual upkeep. Super valuable underrated skill in the workshop that builds into a culture of your place. One glove to clean inside with swab when you are in question of the inside of mask. Tap mask every time you exit grinding room and you will be good. Love your videos!

I agree, ppe will be more likely used if it's convenient to do so. My respirator hangs from the head strap off of my push pull actuator on my belt grinder which is centrally located in my work space and handy. I'm the only one in the space though so there isn't an extreme amount of particulate in the air unless I'm doing it. My spares are all sealed and the mask is checked before I stuff it on my face so I feel alright about it. It must be nice not to have to run down the hall with your molten billet to the hammers anymore, it's all just a circle of workstations, good stuff.

I use to do mold remediation with a full face mask. I still have it too. We had to clean it off every time, even for 2 minute jobs. We had a food based chemical that would be sprayed on before using alcohol wipes to further decontaminate it. We would take it apart like a sniper rifle before placing it into a bag, which was also taped shut before use later. For you Alec, I would just suggest at the very least, keeping a box of alcohol wipes close to your mask. (Optional) Thoroughly clean it at the end of the day, and bag it for over the weekend.

I use a respirator as well when I wood work. Between uses I put mine on a wig head (a mannequin head would serve just as well) , this serves several purposes. With it on the wig head the respirator stays clean because it has a "face" to form against which is just awesome. The "face" also keeps the form of the mask correct so that parts to not fold over which would cause a breach in the seal. Lastly, you are absolutely correct about if you put it away in a box you will not get it out for the quick jobs. The "head" can be left out in the open so that it is readily available all of the time.

I appreciate the talk on wearing a respirator. I agree that everyone should wear one (or at least wear a dust mask). I try to store mine in a bag when I'm done with it for the day. That being said, I'm pretty sure those propane bottles should be tranported upright! Keep up the great work Alec! I like your energy.

Alec, you can put some thin gauge sheet metal or diamond plate on the 2 walls in the grinding shop to keep the walls clean and help keep the grinding dust from building up on the walls. Also, I recommended it before, but you can put a piece behind the hanging rack for the grinders to also protect the wall.

Alec, there are some things you need to keep in mind while making this axe: One, what kind of axe is it? Based on what has been said I would assume it will be a dane axe, in which case you need to remember that axes of that design, if properly made are quite light. With the blade being thinner than some swordblades. Around 4-5 millimeters or between 5/32 and 13/64". The weight of the finished axe should be between roughly 1-2 kg, or 2-4 pounds. The edge should be between 8 or 12 inches, with long pronounced horns on either end of the blade. Depending on wether it is based on a combat axe or a status symbol, the hard should be between 0.9 and 1.2 meters for combat, or potentially as long as 1.5 to 1.7 meters for a status axe.

I stuff a wad of paper towels into my respirator and keep it handy. Does a pretty good job at keeping the breather part clean and is easy enough to quickly take out for use.

I have the same respirator situation. It's needed, but you don't want to go digging it out when you need it. Mine sits on the top of my tool bag, face down. always nearby and accessible. Always easy to grab and put on.

I'm so glad you mentioned respiratory protection. Before Osha decided it was a necessity for deal with the fumes of flux and gases from welding and particles, welders and Smith's were getting lung complications and cancer from thier jobs. Happened to my Grandfather who was a welder for the navy.

Alec! Thanks for the shout out to Tennessee! I have several buddies that keep up with your channel. I love the new workshop, however, one thing that I find I miss about the old one is the raw-ness(new word?) from the old place. The dark shots and the dirt floor just provided something special to the forge and hammer scenes. Just thought I'd mention that. Anyway, love your channel and your inspiration. Keep it up!

Sundstrom respirators come in a convenient storage box, i just hung it on my trolley when i was spraying cars, always handy, always clean. I wouldn't go building one for the same reasons, but if your putting it on a bench, may as well put it in a portable box on the bench.

For your respirators, hang one on the doorknob to the grinding room, hang another on the welder. That way you are always presented with a respirator as you start work. Definitely keep it out of some cramped box, safety equipment only works if you use it!
@CrimFerret7 жыл бұрын
My take is do whatever will get you to wear the respirator the most when you should be wearing it. Heck, get two and keep one at both places you'd use it. A slightly dusty respirator you wear is far better than a pristine one you don't. As for the forging, seeing the new shop going finally is great. Maybe it's just how you did the editing, but you seemed to be moving a lot more metal faster today than you did at the old shop. That billet of damascus looked like it was cooperating with the forge welding really well. Just sort of went into shape with no fuss.

When it comes to the respirator, how about getting another, mount one box on the wall in your welding area and the other in your grinding area, which the filters stored elsewhere. This way you have easy access in both spot and all you need do is reach out, open the box, grab it and put it on and then stuff it back in the back when your done.

Alec if it's a dust particulate respirator hanging it in a clean place will be fine as long as you clean it every once in a while. Chemical respirators like the ones used for painting cars need to be sealed
