In the series, because it never happened in real history. The blood eagle it's fictional.

We don't know that exactly. It is made use of in the Viking Sagas (which the show is based on) but how much of the Sagas are fictional or accurate is ultimately anyone's guess.

I'm not sure if any of you guys read comments on youtube or just in the patreon, but just to clarify: the vikings did not exist at the time of the Roman Empire. Scandinavia was still not developed into the culture we understand as the vikings. And I don't think we can point to villains in this show... I mean we can see the villannification of some characters or people, but I see more like "antagonists". Antagonists of the vikings anyway.
@stonewall017 жыл бұрын
"Viking" is a Scandinavian verb meaning to raid. So "Vikings" should be understood as "Raiders". Also, all Vikings are Scandinavians whether they be from Denmark, Sweden, or Norway. However, you are correct in that they did not venture far from Scandinavia at that time, it wasn't until the Sail was brought into use that they could cross oceans to raid. There is some evidence though that Scandinavians did do some limited trading with the Romans and that is where they acquired knowledge of using sails.
@fheedpexx92677 жыл бұрын
Not exactly. Vik = bay. So to go "baying". It wasn't just about raiding. Most of their activities were just normal trading. But the Norse people didn't identify themselves as vikings. Viking was something you did, an activity. If you were able, you went viking together with other suitable men. To reduce them to raiders is to buy into this outdated narrative as them being barbarians. It's wrong to talk about "viking culture". Norse culture however, that's an interesting topic.
@stonewall017 жыл бұрын
That is what I was trying to say. All Vikings are Scandinavian but not all Scandinavians were Vikings. Or sometimes that were vikings and other times they were traders or farmers etc.
@matthewy2j7 жыл бұрын
During the "Fall of Rome" 300-424 AD there were what the Roman referred to as northmen/Danesmen but Viking culture had not been established yet.

I am a bit late but i want to add, that viking would prabably best be translated as „to go on an expedition“ and for the Roman stuff, if you concidere the byzantines romans(which they themselves did) than Vikings and romans did trade and Vikings even worked for romans the Varangian Guard comes to mind, look it up it’s pretty interesting actually

Should have been clear by the old Roman baths Ecbert uses, and the old Roman litterature he wants Athelstan to study. This is the most surprising for me, that people don't know England was part of the Roman Empire. Like, there are Roman ruins under London(ium).

This is why on episode 1 season 1, I suggested in a comment that they read (or watch) a basic history of the viking age. They would understand what is going on in context of the time. No I know that Vikings is not a documentary, they do play loose with the actual timeline. The show, after all, is based on the tales told in the Viking Sagas rather than true documented history. For example, Ragnar could not have sacked Lindisfarne in 793 and also (you know what) in 845 and then again in 885-886. The actual time frame was too far apart for that to have happened. However, the events as a whole did happen, and a basic knowledge of the viking age would go a long way and I think it would make the show better for them. At the very least they would know the time period this takes place in.

+Arlaal Frost Vikings reached the Eastern Roman Empire and served as the Emperors body guards and as the elite unit in the Byzantine army for many hundreds of years. They were called Varangians or the Varangian Guard.

The 'vikings' didn't really interact with Rome since the western Roman Empire fell long before the Scandinavians were labeled as vikings. There are instances of trade between Scandinavians and Rome but it was through intermediaries in preexisting networks.

Vikings were around after the Roman empire. They did have some interaction with the Byzantine's who I guess were technically "roman". But not the regular Roman empire. It fell in 476 CE and the first recorded planned viking raid was in 793 CE on Lindisfarne

Romans and Vikings didn't "work together". The "Viking Age" occurred after the fall of the western Roman empire. However Scandinavians worked for the Byzantine Empire in the years following the times depicted in this series. What they may be thinking of are the Saxons themselves. Before Saxons started going to Britain, Romans trained Saxons. Pre-migration Saxons were like Scandinavians (minus the ships) mixed with Romans. Kind of like if Vikings were less warriorlike and more militant. At least that is my understanding.

@knuthenriksommer49827 жыл бұрын
DennyWolfie Happy Rather: Pagan romans never encountered vikings because the viking-age started 400 years after the last pagan emperor. Vikings most certainly met the east-roman emperors in Byzants, they had a wide-reaching trade and there even was vikings serving as soldiers for the east-roman emperor: The Varanger. They reached Byzants by the russian river-systems and established trade-posts on the way. Two of them : Novgorod and Kiev are considered the historical beginnings of the russian empire. One possible explanation for the name "russ" in Russia, is the word "Routsa" that in sami language means "Sweden". These descendants of of the vikings later identified themselves as the continuation of the roman empire (as did the franks) and named their ruler "tsar" derived from the name/title "Caesar".

Love your content guys but I have to join my voice with the chorus of those saying the Vikings and Romans never truly co-existed. This series takes place nearly half a millennia after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. The Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine) is still around however, though diminished. And it is true that Scandinavians (among other people) served as the bodyguard of the Eastern Emperor, but let's not mistake the medieval Byzantines for the Romans of antiquity.
