The God Emperor MUST be brought to the big screen. Such a great addition to the Dune universe and continues the story began by Paul Atreides. And also sets up the future with the thinking machines in the distant reaches of space. Would be an awesome film if done well, and by a big name and competent director.

Leto 2 would do much better as a series like Foundation (of which I did not enjoy S1 due to divergence from books, but I had been won over by the adaptation by S2). The deeper conversations could be the entire focus of a single episode, or 3-4 episode arcs. Our Wormy Boy would be something like 4 seasons if directly translated at 10 eps a season, and I'm sure they'd edit/omit some things (beefswelling, anyone?)

I've always considered Dune Messiah and Children of Dune to be one story. Messiah and Children wrap up the Atreides saga, for all intents and purposes. It worked in the 2003 adaptation very well and I can easily see it working now. You know in which direction things are heading and you feel one story ending, whereas you don't with Dune. IMO God-Emperor is unadaptable, as a film anyway. Almost all of the character we knew are long gone. It's a giant worm philosophizing for 400 pages. So strange and so disconnected from the previous events that I'm not even sure how you would adapt it.

I think direction on further installments will be kind of a hot potato if there's a push to get them out. Villeneuve's work cultivated standards and preferences that are unlikely to transfer well. He did a great job with Blade Runner 2049 but it was after a 35 year gap from the original and Villeneuve was uniquely suited to honoring of Scott's masterpiece. I'd be happy to let Villeneuve's work here stand as is.

Best case scenario is Villenueve makes an incredible Messiah that improves upon the book and serves as a fitting conclusion to his main Paul/Chani-focused storyline, while also leaving things open for future stories, then Villenueve stays on as Executive Producer for two Children of Dune movies with a new director that DV approves. I think 5 theatrical movies, Dune: Part 1, Dune: Part 2, Dune: Messiah, Children of Dune: Part 1 and Children of Dune: Part 2 would serve the DUNE franchise well, and then other things could obviously be series on streaming. Might be difficult/expensive to get all the necessary actors back after Messiah though, even for smaller roles/cameos.
@GonzoTehGreat

_"that improves on the book"_ Excuse me? We don't need adaptations which try to improve on the source material! The reason the novels are being adapted is BECAUSE they're good! He's already cut out too much off the story from Dune. Both films should've been 3-4hrs long each, with shorter theatrical releases followed by longer Director's cuts, as Peter Jackson did with LotR. Hopefully, he doesn't cut anymore and faithfully adapts Dune Messiah!

@@GonzoTehGreat An adaptation. That takes the book and turns it into a quality film. For that to happen, changes are necessary. That's why it's called an adaptation. Filming a book, and one like Messiah page by page exactly as the book is written, would make for a poor film experience.
@GonzoTehGreat
@GonzoTehGreat 14 сағат бұрын
@@jeffreyroedel9804 Agreed. Changes are necessary, but these don't need to improve the book, just faithfully adapt it. I may not agree with all of Villeneueve's edits, but they're his perogative as Director. However, "improve on" implies deliberately changing the story to make it better...

@@GonzoTehGreat No just altering the story of Messiah so it makes a better movie and continuation of Villeneuve's series moreso than a straight page for page adapation. That's all I mean. So for instance, Dune part 2 already diverges from the book in ways that will impact Messiah. Those threads need to be followed up in a compelling way. I think DV will do it well.
@GonzoTehGreat
@GonzoTehGreat 11 сағат бұрын
@@jeffreyroedel9804 _so it makes a better movie_ Dune Messiah hasn't been adapted into a movie yet, so there's nothing to compare it to, or improve on. Regardless, a faithful adaptation would be preferable. _"and continuation of Villeneuve's series moreso than a straight page for page adapation"_ I think it's obvious that it will be a continuation of his previous films. He's not suddenly going to deviate from them... Also, as you already pointed out, there's no such thing as a "page-for-page" adaptation, so that's irrelevant. _"Dune part 2 already diverges from the book in ways that will impact Messiah"_ Such as? I can't think of anything except his proposed changes to Chani, but it's been a long time since I read it. As I said in my original reply, I don't think he should try to IMPROVE ON the book, which is LITERALLY what you wrote in your initial comment. An adaptation doesn't need to this. It takes about three years to make a movie, there’s six books, spending 18 years of your career on one franchise is a lot to ask. Added to which, the saga doesn’t have a proper conclusion, as Herbert decided not to write the final book. So this is a good stepping-off point for him.

I personally find the concept of a trilogy for the Dune books is not all that accurate. Dune and Dune Messiah form more of a duology. Herbert wrote them together and they were released within 4 years of each. Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune form a second duology - both written after the first duology with a release 6 years later, and they released within 5 years of each other. I wouldn't read Children of Dune unless you were going on to read God Emperor of Dune. In many ways, this is consistent with Denis take on the franchise and his part in it.

After 2016's "Arrival" he lost his way, churning out abominations like "Blade Runner 2049" (🤢🤮) and overhyped cinematic fast-food like the "Dune" movies. For me, his best movie to date remains "Sicario". Though most if not all of his earlier/prior cinematic endeavours are quite interesting and thought provoking as well.

This is disappointing but expected. I think that Denis is the only one who can translate Dune onto screen well. My concern is that Children of Dune will be of Dune: Prophecy quality.

Damn... I thought the thumbnail title meant he was out NOW. I have zero interest in the Zendaya Show he has for Dune 3. In fact, to get the taste of Willy "Dylan" Wonka and Zendaya out of my mouth after watching Part 2, I bought the Blu-ray of Lynch's Dune.

He should redo the second half of Dune so it follows the book. Dune 2 had great special effects but story was not good.

Dune Messiah is not a good stopping point for the story. You have to go at least through children of dune

By casting Zendaya as Chani, it gives the studio what it wanted, eliminating more White characters from any future Dune movies in the franchise.

Disappointing, though I'm sure I'll enjoy whatever he makes. I would have liked to see the initial trilogy resolved by him, but if they make both Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune with the same dedication and quality, we all win.

i mean he thought he was more virtuous and smarter than the author and wrote himself into a corner changing crucial characters, now he realizes he cant stick the landing after gutting important plots and altering characters motives, indulging current year identity politics.

The number of bitter, ill informed, petty, nitpicking Dune ‘fans’ in the comments is honestly pathetic. If it wasn’t for Villeneuve, you wouldn’t have a Dune revival, you wouldn’t have two of the most beautifully directed and crafted films of the past decade, you wouldn’t have anything. Instead of crying about how the films didn’t perfectly live up to your impossible expectations, maybe try appreciating them for what they are, rather than what you arbitrarily criticise them for what they aren’t. Grow up, please. It’s embarrassing. And some of you are older than me.

If it wasn't for Denis, I'd have an actual Dune fan making this adaptation now, after the politicization of media, and Id get a far better product. Also, if you think that people who disagree with you on a movie need to grow up, then you're the one still in diapers

I think he's done a decent job of adapting the novel, but there's still plenty to critique and no, I'm not thankful for his films. I was a Dune fan long before them and will remain one long after they're forgotten by most people. Meanwhile, adaptations will come and go, some better than others and Villeneueve's version is much better and more faithful than Lynch's beautifully flawed attempt, back in 1984, so there's that.

It sounds to me as if, having taken a hatchet to critical aspects of Frank Herbert's original vision, Villeneuve is going to bail out before he gets to the parts of the story that will become much harder to adapt due to decisions he has already made in the first two movies - Children of Dune is where the harmful legacy of the actions and decisions of Paul in the original Dune novel starts to become fully evident (arguably more so than in Dune Messiah) in the books, something that Villeneuve has preemptively undercut by refusing to have faith in the intelligence of the audience and instead trying to crudely hammer home the idea that Paul is a dangerous figure whose leadership will have perilous consequences for the Fremen and the galaxy (and is possibly even a nascent villain in Villeneuve's version) earlier in the narrative than Frank Herbert originally envisioned - and which will also be where the liberties he has taken so far will become ever more evident to the viewing public, even those less familiar or unfamiliar with the source material. If Villeneuve plans to extensively rewrite the origins of, or even exclude, the characters of Leto the Second and Ghanima from the narrative of Dune Messiah (entirely possible given what he has done to Paul and Chani's relationship and the way he has already cut their first born child from the narrative), then adapting Children of Dune in even a minimally faithful fashion will be entirely impossible. The same will be the case if he decides to take further liberties with the characterization of Alia, which on prior form seems very likely indeed. I pity whoever gets stuck with what will most likely prove to be something of a poisoned chalice of a director's position in any hypothetical Dune Part 4.

He'll change his mind and do a 4th movie if everything is perfect with Messiah and if his availability and desire is different in 3, 4 years from now. Maybe he'll take a 5 year pause from this world and return in 2030 with the plan to do another one.
