@JmanEspresso
@JmanEspresso 3 жыл бұрын
The other thing your're missing, is these people were absolute douchenozzles. you dont show up to look at and potentially purchase a high end car, and act like a joke. You show class and respect, and if you dont have those things and all you have is money, you get treated how you deserve. Remove black ice or shitty roads with salt, and I guarantee these dudes would grant a test drive to someone who presented themselves with class and respect for the car and the person selling it. Furthermore, when you’re buying a car through a private dealer or broker like this, it’s not the same as the dealership or some lot with cars. You’re paying for the reputation of the person sourcing the car for you. There’s a premium price being paid, and part of that pay for the piece of mind knowing they’re not selling you something that has a hidden issue 20 miles down the road. The same cannot be said for other methods of purchase. Having a relationship with guys like this, is the kind of thing where you here someone say, “yeah that’s my guy so-and-so, he’s my car guy. Majority of their transactions are with repeat clients who continually buy and trade cars with them over the years. There’s no reason for a test drive in most cases. It’s an entirely unique car buying experience, it’s nothing like what we have to deal with when we go to the dealership or the used lot. For us, it’s a game of, who is gonna bend over first. Getting the deal you want to get is often a matter of having the balls to be a little bit of a dick and stand your ground. And yeah you absolutely test drive it, especially if it’s used, you gotta see if it makes some awful sound or doesn’t shift it whatever. THATs what’s test drive is for.
@bustabeans7917

Usually we would replace tires, but sometimes we don’t. Tires are a personal choice on specialty cars that reflect the type of use of the buyer. What if we spent $1500 on good r-compounds for handling and the buyer was going to drag race it? I’m very particular about tires for my car and I’d personally rather get a slight discount on a car and pick my own tires than buy one that the dealer put on crappy all-seasons or something and then have to pay them back for a bad decision. Therefore, sometimes we leave them alone, inform the buyer, and let them make the choice on rubber.

Test-drove my first Ferrari - a 328 gts I ended up buying. Seller forgot, or assumed, I knew about the emergency brake, as it lived between the driver’s seat and the door-sill. The brake-lever collapsed when not in-use to allow the driver to get in and out of the seat without the lever being in-the-way....but to everyone else, it looks like it’s disengaged. So, I drove the car for a few miles - it seemed pretty sluggish for some reason....and there was smoke from the rear wheels when I stopped. Oops....

On a slight hill.... The car started to roll forward into a traffic on a busy road. I pulled hard on the emergency brake, nothing. So I drove from the passenger seat and got it on the shoulder and into the grass. Salesman comes running, cussing the world. Took a bit for him to calm down. Never did apologize for cussing me. If in any of those situations you were able to lock 4 tires up instantly and entirely.. the cars would slide to a quick stop. Thats what i believe. Abs is great for most people daily driving. I'm surprised that Doug is surprised that people expect to be allowed to test drive a potential car purchase. There's no way I would buy any car without test driving it first. A test drive is not simply to see if you like the way a car drives & handles, it's also to determine if it has any mechanical defects.

I think he is against test drives during winter time because black ice and have some stranger drive your tuned car let alone a tuned mustang then id be hesitant too. You know how your car is gonna feel better than anyone but others won’t. That’s why Matt Farrah is one of my favorite car journalist because dude has drove hundreds of strangers turned cars only ever one accident which cause it was raining.

Test drives are a common thing, even with exotics, so if you aren’t going to allow someone to test drive your vehicle (which is fine) you’d be better off letting people know ahead of time instead of acting kind of like a douche and “being surprised” that someone would dare want to drive before they buy. 🙄

That’s something I was thinking. Not allowing a test drive is ok, but it’s definitely not ok to assume they’ll know they can’t test it when they’re flying out just to see it. Nobody is gonna fly out to see a car when they can’t drive it

I test drove a PT Cruiser 5sp GT from a private seller one time. Having bought a new 2004 PT cruiser non GT, we loved everything about the car except it was SLOW! I'm test driving many GT's to find the right one, and my lord this one was FAST! I never did find what they had done to the car, but I never really looked either, but something was different. I took the owner for the ride of his life because I wanted to test it at the limits! I felt the need to apologize to the owner after the drive which I did, and we bought the car!😅👍✌🗽

I’m not gonna try to compare myself to this gentleman but i have sold a decent amount of cars over the years from 500 junkers to higher end pleasure vehicles, you need to be upfront for example 1) if you don’t allow test drives you have to say that up front before they come 2) if the car needs any safety type items Such as tires,brakes suspension repair fix it before you sell or let someone drive the car 3) if it’s a high end car either say no test drives without cash in hand or say you will take them for a ride but you do that right off the rip 4) if it’s a motorcycle or dirt bike no test rides at all doesn’t matter if they have a motorcycle license or not. Seen a lot of bikes get dropped and wrecked from inexperienced people. Never assume people are in the same wave length that you are just because you won’t drive your 500 horse power Buick grand national in a snow storm doesn’t mean they won’t want to if your trying to sell it to them!

I've never driven an expensive car, but I did see the result of another person's test drive of a brand new Viper. The dealership is across a ravine with a wide bridge from the highway to the dealer. The highway is a very busy 4 lane in the city. My guess is that he'd never driven a Viper and just stomped on the pedal to pull out in traffic. The Viper just spun around in 180 degree loop ending up in the ravine! When I came by, a very nice Viper was standing nearly vertically nose first in the ravine with a bunch of concerned people milling around scratching their heads. I'm guessing he didn't buy the car.

I agree with what he’s saying. If you know what you buying you don’t have to drive it first. I didn’t test drive the last 2 vehicles I bought. Do your research before you buy, watch videos, read owner comments.

I get why these guys don't allow test drives but I'm not marrying a chick before we live together and I'm definitely NOT buying a vehicle without driving it first. It honestly doesn't matter if it's a $1,500 car or a $150,000 car. As far as the weather goes... I just wouldn't ever try buying something like that during the winter.

Same... Even this guy .. im almost certain test drives a car before buying it, I totally understand its his cars and he can make the rules although i along with MANNNY people won't buy a car without test driving it. It doesn't have to do with the car possibly having problems, its just the fact of seeing exactly 'How' the car drives and to see if i like it or not. The fact that he thinks its crazy to ask to test drive the cars regardless if its as you said 1,500$ or 150,000$ is wild.

Dealers should have customers sign a contract that if the person wants to test drive the car, they must purchase the car at the listed price of the day the car is test driven if the driver causes major damage to the car. Damage that makes the car inoperable or function abnormally.

Idk man I know it’s a mustang and winter but if I’m coming to buy a car, and a car that’s not all that expensive. I expect to test drive it, in that situation I would obviously not expect to get a great feel for the car when in those conditions. but never the less I can still go less than 15 mph and get a feel for the car, I would be angry that some cocky bastard wouldn’t let me drive the car I’ve come to potentially buy.

Anyone who used to buy / sell cars on craigslist has better stories than this. Especially back in the day before dealers posing as locals took over. The lower you priced your car, the more shite you'd run into. People want a good driving, good looking, clean titled, reliable car for 200$. Its amazing even 1 person turned me down when I sold my mechanically sound escort for 500$. The only problems were cosmetic or interior components.
