Vinyl Wrapping the Roof Black on my Jeep Renegade

My first attempt at wrapping my roof. I choose 3M 1080 Gloss Black Vinyl as the color for my roof to replicate how the glass roofs and Trail Hawks look.
Unfortunately with my lack of skill and the cold weather my wrap job went south and ended up needing to be removed.
Don't worry, more things to come! New roof rails and other things. You never know I might just try this again.

Hey man, I respect the fact that you uploaded this video; many people would just say screw it, and delete the video. Glad you showed us how difficult it is to try to vinyl wrap an entire roof, and why sometimes it's better to go to a professional. Appreciate it, and I look forward to more videos.

Thanks, the channel is dedicated to my experience with the Jeep so I can't sugar coat it. The other thing is I am into the wrap and tools about 100 bucks, with nothing to show for it. If I can help someone out that atleast makes it worth it.

That's how it sometimes turns out when DIY'ing, but it's also a part where you can learn , like you said aswell, one needs to get errors and fault before learning how to be good at something . You didn't learn everything you know today in a second, it takes time, perseverance and a good amount of effort to get where you want to be :) Loads of respect for how you took this on and showed failing isn't a disaster . I've done many small wrappings etc, but never even dared to try a roofwrap, I'll probably fail aswell even if I do have years of cardetailing experience as a professional x-)

You really did a good job for the first time. Always wrap dry never wet. And always keep to 2 inches of vinyl in each side before you start to cut. I really hope you kept trying

Not telling you what you have no doubt already possibly learned but.....You don't cut before you lay the product down (u have to be able to work with the material & for the grooves in ur roof), & you apply the material to a "DRY & cleaned section." This isn't window tint.....If the roof has flaws in it, your not going to want to use a gloss or flat color or you'll see the dents, big scratches etc......you can however use Carbon Fiber vinyl by 3m or etc....u won't be able to see any imperfections in the roof due to the carbon fiber print, & if u want it to shine/sparkle there is this wax by Lucas Mist Wax that gives it a nice shine effect....but use an absorbing towel while applying in sections & not in the wind & not microfiber or you'll have fabric hairs all over ur wrap. Keep in mind that nobody will be looking at ur roof but you & wraps functions are to help prevent/protect ur car from scratches etc.....Also....to remove wrap....use the heat gun...it's easier....that material should of come right up after heating the material. Also with the grooves in ur roof you want to put down some 3M Primer on those areas/grooves only where they go down at an angle B4 laying the material down or it'll just start to come up from the heat of the sun. (Learned that from a local guy who does car signs for a living) And ur squeegee needs a piece of felt on it or it'll scratch or put holes in ur material. They have a kit on Amazon that even comes with magnets to hold ur material down while you work on peeling it from the paper & work on placement. I'd watch some more videos of how the professionals do it before attempting again. I watched hours of it before doing the hood of my car. Came out super nice. I'm doing my roof this week with the gloss black or the carbon... Haven't decided. Hope this helped btw.

Cool, I think I saw someone on the forums do that with their yellow Renegade. It ended up looking pretty good with a white roof.

JeepRenegadeGuy I had just added graphics myself. It was a learning experience. Goofed up on the hood, but it's correctable with additional stuff. Can send pics of it, if interested.

I vinyl wrapped mine, but I only had do above the doors to the MySky that was scary enough. I couldn't imagine doing the entire roof.

Hi jeeprenegadeguy. I successfully wrapped my roof but I used a different technique. I made a feature of the "ribs" running front to back. I can send you a picture if you want? Not sure how to do that on KZbin. Great videos by the way, I am going to use the grill video and I also just bought some roof rails. They didn't come with any instructions so your video should be really useful

You should have went on a couple sites before you tackle it and I believe it's because of your 3M don't have too much quality she go to KZbin and search for CK wrap he will explain to you how to wrap it right

I think it had to do with the 35deg temps when I was doing this. 3m is good stuff.

the mistake have been at the start when you pulled the entire vinyl on the roof, whitout to work from the center to the sides

Thanks for letting your subscribers know that vinyl wrapping is not as easy as some may think. This installation was unsuccessful for several reasons, not least because you are inexperienced and your roof is a notch above beginners level. Conditions weren't right to begin with (too cold - ideal ambient temp should be 71F or higher) plus you were installing outside (dust contamination). Also, the proper installation technique for this material is dry install because it has channels that allow the air to escape (as most vinyl wrap films do), hence why it's also known as a film that's pressure tacked, not contact sensitive and therefore, repositionable. Proper application technique is also worth a mention but that's too many details for a comment ;)

Thank you for the thoughts. The temp I thought could cause some issues. 3M's website said working temp was as low as 40 Degrees, and obviously, that contributed. I also learned very quickly that wrapping the roof is different than putting on a decal. The fluid was my most egregious error for sure. Might try it again in the summer, or more likely have the local wrap shop give me a hand. Thanks again for the thoughts!
