Thanks for suffering through the controls and trauma for us! During the maze-scene, I was completely with Ellen: _"c'mon, Luke, read the next section already! That's how pace-notes work!"_ But then I saw the walk-through. I expected bullet-pointed sections with clear places where to start and stop reading. But no: it's just several paragraphs of dense text interspersed with pictures. It's hard to keep your place in it even when calmly reading through it. I'm amazed Luke didn't re-read or skip a line in the stress of a realtime situation. It's things like these that are often forgotten when playing/watching a game.

@@yennefer440 No, aside from the fact that they both have a limited inventory. In Madison you get 10 inventory slots and a couple storage lockers, which are a little frustrating to have to occasionally backtrack to but it's really not a big deal. You can only place key items in your inventory (and it's just one button press to do that), so you won't be running around with a useless bottle taking up space like Ellen was for a chunk of this stream haha. Anything you interact with that requires an item will automatically open your inventory as well, so you don't need to intuit that. I guess it's overall a more standard inventory system than Visage's.

@@dystopiawanderer I think they have been using walkthroughs more because they've had streams run over time or just really not get far into a game because they've gottten stuck or lost. And Luke hadn't played this one so he couldn't naturally guide her like he did in something like Resident Evil. Unfortunately some games do work better when you go slow (and are thus not necessarily great for a stream) and sometimes it's hard to find a decent walkthrough to follow.

@@bishielurfer Yeah, that's fair. I've used plenty of walkthroughs as well, although in my opinion it shouldn't stand in the way of trying to figure things out on one's own. But it can absolutely be (too) tough to figure out what to do in these types of games.
@rhysiare2 жыл бұрын
@@dystopiawanderer I usually shy away from walkthroughs too, but I figure a gaming channel has to consider the audience's attention. If we watch someone be stuck on a puzzle for an inordinate amount of time, then the people who've played the game are going to get frustrated because they know the answer, and the people who haven't played the game are going to get bored. Having watched this (and not played it), I can see very clearly that a walkthrough is an absolute necessity, especially if you're on a time crunch. Like god, I love a huge exploration environment in horror games, but even I must admit the house in this game is way too damn big and maze-like to be practical for streaming the game.

I think one often over-looked aspect of horror is the idea that You Had This Coming. If a monster is just chasing you for no reason, then you're just a victim, and there's some dignity in that. All the best horror stories are ones where the monster is chasing you becuase you fucked up in some way - summoned the demon, awakened the curse, or, yes, killed a bunch of people and now their ghosts are coming for you. Having the protagonist be unsympathetic is not a bug, it's a feature. :p

Frustration and horror are an awful combination, horror games are better when they keep things simple and avoid trial and error. But aren’t you glad you saw a bathtub fill in real time? Lol

I can't be the only one who hates such crappy low effort jumpscare "horror" "games". That said, thanks to Ellen for playing so we don't have to and Luke for the great assistance.

I'm so glad I quit playing this game part way through. The game starts off really well. I think it would have been great if you were just exploring a haunted house, trying to find various secrets, and going into every room. However, these chapters you have to go through are deeply confusing and unintuitive. They start to get more stressful but less scary as time goes on, and the control scheme is terrible. This is just stressful without being fun. You might as well go to work during your leisure time.

Suggestion for next year's Fear Academy: The Mortuary Assistant. Extremely scary, easy to pick up, and it's possible to play a massive chunk of the story content available in ~2 hours.

1:47:51 to 1:48:05 Ellen looks genuinely stressed. I know her reactions are the whole point to these Fear Academy vids, but one starts to wonder if these are becoming legit bad for her mental health. Not worth it if they are.

That is thoughtful, but I assure you she is definitely fine. She has talked about regularly rewatching these to laugh at herself squealing. This series is also her idea. Unlike other channels, no one makes her do it, it's something she wanted to do and proposed in the first place.

@@RoryStarrAnd don’t forget it genuinely helps Ellen when Andy, Jane, Luke or Mike are very funny. Like when she didn’t like Mommy being like a spider but Jane genuinely cracked her up with her joke about wanting Mommy to eat her insides out as long as she was quick about it 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Why do I always watch these at night?! I'm paralyzed in fear on my couch. Give me some of your courage, Ellen! I hate scary houses...
