You should look at the Napier Deltic locomotive / marine engine. It is insane. 36 pistons, 3 crankshafts, no valves, and forced induction. Keep up the great work, VisioRacer!
@coenijn8 жыл бұрын
+davidrobert2007 Jup, said this a couple of weeks ago as well. They are absolutely positively insane both in design and power output. Hell if you really think about it: its 3 V12 2 stroke diesel engines in 1 weird delta configuration. The fact that it has no valves makes it even crazier!
@davidrobert20078 жыл бұрын
You know it. I love the geometry of the Deltic, and thinking on, it would be possible to use the same principle to make a hexagon shaped version of it using six 120 degree v12s, or a square version using four 90 degree v8s. Bloody pistons flying everywhere lol.
@coenijn8 жыл бұрын
davidrobert2007 But the only vehicle that could manage to fit such a colossal engine would be a boat. You could probably walk through the engine as well, sounds awesome. I love big engines
@gizmo986328 жыл бұрын
+davidrobert2007 that would be absolutely insane lol the standard deltic is insane in its own right.. but doubling the pistons? oi.. I would look like Harry from the Harry in the Hendersons movie when he opened the door to the closet. my head would smoke lol

The engine in the Tucker is a converted helicopter engine. It was converted from air to liquid cooled and converted to be parallel to the ground instead of perpendicular as it would have been in the airframe. I wish I had a million to buy one of these. It is true automotive history and a sad one at that. I recommend watching the movie Tucker....

Love the inline 6 bike, but that V-12 is INSANE. The Tucker used a helicopter flat 6 engine that was air cooled. the cooling ducts located on the rear fenders didn't cool as well as they had originally thought and the motor could be prone to overheating. that being said, in '48 and '49 the Tucker broke the Daytona speed record and was banned from the first year of NASCAR because the big three were really scared of this rocket.

Here's another one that might be obscure. Superleague Formula. Cars in this motorsport used 4.2L V12 engines. Information isn't very extensive as the series only ran for two years, but the English wikipedia article is perhaps your best bet, and also has a sound file that can be used. The Tucker air-cooled flat-6 engine, the O-335 made by Air Cooled Motors (and originally intended for the Bell 47 Helicopter ),[21] fit, and its 166 hp (124 kW; 168 PS) pleased Tucker. He purchased four samples for $5,000 each, and his engineers converted the 334 cubic inches (5,470 cc) engine to water cooling (a decision that has puzzled historians ever since).[21] The Franklin engine was heavily modified by Tucker's engineers, including Eddie Offutt and Tucker's son Preston, Jr. at his Ypsilanti machine shop. Using an aircraft engine in an automotive application required significant modification; thus, very few parts of the original Franklin engine were retained in the final Tucker engine. This durable modification of the engine was tested at maximum power for 150 hours, the equivalent of 18,000 miles (29,000 km), at full throttle.[22]

You ended up using footage of a VP185 powered HST there for the Valenta, but the two are very similar, and this is mainly a car channel, so the mistake is understandable. Valenta's are also used in a class of Canadian submarine. Here's what a Valenta under power sounds like: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4PKl6yOj66SeNU As for another engine people may not know about, the 3.0 litre V12 from the Ferrari 412 T2. Old 90's F1 car, so probably out of the limelight now. OH, and what about that crazy quad-rotor engine from the 1991 Mazda 787B Le Mans car? Not sure if that already got included.

What I don't understand about that very last engine in this video. Why can you see the camshaft and rocker-arms? Shouldn't they be covered in a casing so that oil can be put in? I mean, yea sure its idling slowly at the moment so its ok, but if your running it at top-speed and you've got no oil in the camshaft and rocker-arms?!
@mjouwbuis6 жыл бұрын
I think this is top speed. Just as a steam engine, it will probably have oil drippers on each critical point.

To hear the real scream of a Valenta watch this kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWKsdJaFqpWBoa8 , the first engine shown as a Valenta (that genset) isn't a Valenta by the way, but a much older design, the YH range, the one shown is a 12YHAZ of 60 litre displacement and naturaly aspirated, these gensets were used on British Resolution class submarines for auxilary power, and delivered only 422hp nominal (the same engine turbocharged wil do 850bhp at 1500rpm). These submarines caried the Polaris nuclear missile and formed part of the nuclear deterent fleet in Europe. That tiny 5 cilinder Honda engine is awesome, like 5 chainsaws coupled togheter.
@Kromaatikse8 жыл бұрын
+dieselmupke Worse, the HST he shows actually has a VP185 engine, a later Paxman model. How can one introduce the Valenta as a "mad engine", and not actually show the Napier turbocharger and Marston cooler that went with it, nor even mention that it powered the fastest diesel train in the world?
@Tom-Lahaye8 жыл бұрын
That's right, the HST's originaly had Y3J Valenta's, but later the VP185 was fitted if a replacement became nessecary. The regular, allowed top speed for a HST is 125mph (200kmh), but on test runs a highest record speed of 148mph (238kmh) was reached, which is still the official world record for diesel traction, with a set of 2 power cars and 5 coaches. However the Russians claim a top speed of 271kmh for their TEP80 diesel-electric locomotive, of which only two were built. With a power output of 4400hp and no train to haul the speed is feasible, if your traction motors don't flash out. (it's built for 100mph, 160kmh) Ther are some video's of these locomotives and the actual record run on youtube, simply search tep 80.

It slightly annoys me that the people who are driving the 2-stroke bikes are engine breaking on downhill and in general, these bikes are kinda rare and should be treated with proper care, i know that the are being maintained properly, but the way they are being driven isn't correct.
@Oldbmwr100rs8 жыл бұрын
+0laZz I've known 3 people who rode their RGV's, and hard as they were meant to be ridden. Sad thing with them is they were prone to blowing up. That bike, the Suzuki Gamma 500, was pretty much an earlier generation GP race bike and it's road performance was frighteningly impressive. It's lifespan was that of a racebike though. Yamaha also sold a V-4 2 stroke 500 more built for the street and it was damn durable. Not as fast as the Suzuki, but certainly more able to survive road use. Sadly those days of super light 2 stroke streetbikes are gone. Yeah, we have bikes that are so much better, but there's little like a really hot 2 stroke street bike with it's noise, smell and peaky power!
